Hotel Iaccarino
Reviewed September 1, 2013

I have just returned from this hotel where I have been on several occasions. All I can say is it has unfortunately changed from a good hotel to a poorly run hotel where there is no such concept as customer service.

The staff all seem very down and when you ask them for something it is greeted with an attitude of 'it's a problem, i can't be bothered'. The evening meal was poor, food piled on a plate and no real taste. The atmosphere in the restaurant was terrible and the staff were very miserable and at times very rude. Added to the fact that we found a caterpillar in our food, I say no more.

Breakfast was ok but after drinking tea or coffee we had stomach pains which I think is from the water. However, it could be the cleanliness of the glasses which had a particular aroma about them.

The hotel is very expensive and you have to pay for everything including WIFI. The main positives are that the views are very good and the pool area is lovely.

Shame, we won't be returning again.

The Iaccarino provides a totally relaxing experience, in a charming, traditional and restful surrounding. It offers one of the most picturesque views you will ever see, across the bay to Vesuvius. The staff are wonderfully helpful and always willing to put themselves out to make your stay as pleasurable as possible, whether its sorting dinner reservations or setting up your late night tea tray before going off duty. We have visited numerous times both as a couple and as a family, and it never disappoints. If you want to truly unwind there is no better location. The hotel offers an excellent four star experience at a reasonable cost. We look forward to seeing Mr Martello, Laura and the team next year.

Room Tip: Pool view worth asking for.

Hotel Iaccarino looks slightly tired from the outside, but when you enter the huge sumptuous lounges, it has the Italian feel of elegance. I agree with previous comments about differences in staff friendliness; the restaurant staff are mostly happy and friendly, the restaurant would benefit from a 'deputy' maitre d' to take orders at busy times.
The busy little town of Sant Agata is lovely, with 5/6 bar restaurants serving delicious food (Gregory's, Buenos Aires bar and Bar Centrale) and Orlando's bar and ice cream parlour (home made ice cream to die for!). Regular perfomances in the town 'square' (it is in fact triangular!) are a treat - we had a teenage musical, childrens ballet and dancing, and on our last evening an orchestra and singers (a bit like the 3 tenors). These performances are open to all and free.

Room Tip: We paid the extra for sea view and bacony - and it was worth it.

We'd read mixed reviews before we went but were so glad we ignored the negative ones. Thought the place was amazing. Italian feeling throughout with gorgeous views from the balcony. We couldn't fault anything. We stayed 2 weeks and the three course evening menu was never once repeated!! Staff were very friendly. The 'maitre de,' Nino is quite a character with a great sense of humour. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: I would book well in advance say what kind of room you want. I think you get what you actually pay f...

We arrived and were taken to what a fellow guest called 'the hobbit hole' as the top floor rooms have apex roof's so restricted the usable room. We were surprised there was only one window and not a large at that, the view was of the back buildings and alley which leads to St. Agata town, by the end of the holiday we manged to find a sort of beauty in it, however not the picturesque view you may have in mind when booking. The waiter asked our room number and then replied with 'Urghh I hate 75' positive. The food was edible, the starters were just as large as the mains and many nights we'd have just a starter as these were more Italian inspired and tasted 100x better than the dry meat and two veg mains options, definitely not 4* standard. The lunches served at the snack bar were fabulous however, and I had the tastiest salad to date. The service is mixed one Italian lady on the front desk was extremely grumpy and unpleasant, Marco on the front desk and many of the restaurant staff were lovely so was the older gentleman who runs the bar (who's nae escapes me). Definitely make use of the sister hotel's bathing platforms as it's a great change of scenery and a swim in the cool sea is welcomed. Be aware that the tour operators heavily overprice some excursions. For example, we wanted to visit Herculaneum which was 35 euros for a half day through tour operator, we took the free shuttle into Sorrento and then walked to the train station and paid 3.20 euros for return tickets to Ercolano Scavi startion which is a 5 minute walk to Herculaneum, saving a small fortune especially if you're a large party. By the end of the trip we had come to love all it's quirky bits and did enjoy our time away, all I will say is that if you're used to a high standard when staying abroad this may not tick all the boxes.

I was a bit concerned when I read other reviews about this hotel, but we had a lovely holiday and would go back again. The hotel is a typical old italian one with lovely staff who take great pains to make sure your stay enjoyable. Our only gripe was having to pay €15 per night for air con, but given the price of the hotel rooms this was reasonable in total. Food is OK and Nino head waiter is really lovely. You may want to drink at Orlando's in the village though, more atmosphere and cheaper. Lovely people seem to go to this hotel which really adds to a great holiday!
