“A real find!!”
Reviewed August 11, 2006

We have just returned from a wonderful week in San Agata where we stayed in the Villa Romita an annex to Grand Hotel Hermitage, which was just a two minute stroll from the village of San Agata. The hotel and the surrounding area provide a relaxing break for all ages. Many other guests took in the sights of Rome and Mount Vesuvius while we ourselves visited Pompeii and Positano, making this an ideal trip for either sightseers or those who prefer a more gentle break! To get to these sights, you could take the courtesy shuttle bus, which runs several times a day from the hotel. We chose to hire a car from Sorrento which we found convenient. There were a few nice restaurants and bars in the village, very reasonably priced while the hotel itself had an excellent varied menu, with their trademark excellent service. The hotel was very welcoming and well-run. We found the staff to be extremely helpful and mannerly, with good English and were willing to do anything they could to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. In fact it was the staff who made this holiday as they were so full of life, laid back and pleasant!
The pool was clean and overlooks spectacular mountain-top views and of the Bay of Naples. One tip would be to be wary of the tendency of some holidaymakers who reserve sun loungers by the pool and leave them all day, so others couldn't sit on them.
Our one regret is that we didn't book for two weeks!!

Having read all the reviews about the Gran Hermitage, many of which are overly critical, I would like to submit my own opinion on the matter. I found the hotel to be spotlessly clean, the staff polite and obliging, and the area, while removed from the town of Sorrento, was charming, and the views were spectacular. Granted the Sita bus posed a bit of a conundrum to begin with, but once we had the times written down, we managed very well. The only suggestion I would make as regards transport, is that Franco, a very kind and helpful person, run the courtesy bus in and out of town more frequently, preferably with a home run in the mid afternoon sometime, as this is the most difficult time to get public transport. The food we found excellent, with fresh fruit available at every meal, also when we wished to have a packed lunch, rather than pane, we asked for a filled buttered roll, which was supplied as necessary. Anyone who was not happy with the menu on any given evening was offered an alternative by Antonino, who was the major domo of the dining area, and a very effective and pleasant one at that. A four course meal was provided every evening, which consisted of a salad starter, and various local dishes to follow, and the deserts were delicious. All of the staff were pleasant and polite to us and we were very impressed by them, as a result we had no problem asking for whatever we needed. The standard of hygiene in the rooms was excellent, with daily cleaning and towel change, and twice weekly linen change.
My only requests would be for some way to stop the beds sliding around the bedroom, this was caused by the beautiful tiled floors which did not allow the lags of the beds grip, and a means of keeping drinks cool in the rooms such as a cooler, or small fridge of some type. As this is about the hotel, and not the beautiful Sorrentine peninsula, I will finish here. Just to say my partener and I had a lovely holiday in the Gran Hermitage, and will certainly return there at some stage.

  • Liked — The views, and proximity to Sant'Agata.
  • Disliked — small beds

We were a couple with our 2 yr old child.

Comfortable and clean rooms. Amazing view (note! not all rooms face the view - u should explicitly ask for one facing it).

Enjoyed the pool.
nice and hospitable staff.
Convenient shuttle service to the sorrento town.
Very average breakfast.
A lot of parking if coming by car.
About a 10 minute drive from Sorrento center.

Bottom line - we enjoyed the hotel very much and got good value for our money - recommended.
