Don Alfonso 1890 Boutique Hotel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 23, 2010

We stayed here 3 days and got the package that included 3 nights stay and one dinner at the restaurant. At 1000€ I considered a very good deal considering the standards provided.

The service was very good; this is something you would expect anyway at these levels; what made it different and somehow exceptional was the family friendness of all staff; regardless if you are a returned customer or a new comers (like us) you get the same warm treatment; this applies especially to the owners, Alfonso and Livia.

The hotel is in the middle of a rather anonymous village in the middle of the Sorrentine Peninsula; the great thing about that is that gives very easy access to all areas around but it is located in the rather “less touristy” part of this region. This may be a bless in the busy holiday periods. In fact this is the rather wilder part with great drives and walks close by on the point of the Peninsula (and views of Capri).

The area is full of other very good restaurants; ask in the hotel and they will give you plenty of good suggestions; we tried “Il Buco” at Sorrento (very good) and “Ristorante Lo Scoglio” at Nerano (good but expensive for the level provided).

If I had to use one word to describe the experience here, it would be "Heaven". The rooms are beautiful, the food is incredible, the scenery is fanastic and the service is out of this world. If you get a chance to stay here, do not pass it up!

I stayed here for several days and nights. "DAR". is most certainly at the top of their game right now, even in the Italian off season. Yes, it might take time together which includes a stop in Naples (urgh) and natural coastal S shape roads.

Here you are very much cocooned from the outside world and local town. The restaurant is naturally top notch. You don't get 3 Mitchelin stars for nothing. If you get the chance ask to go into the kitchen and most impressive wine cellar. If you like your food and wine you'll love it here. Even the Sunday lunch 'pizza' is an experience to behold. They also have a cooking school on site. Ernesto is very much the star (chef) here. Yet, Livia and Mario make you feel very welcome and are also ready to have a chat and explain all the food and wine choices.

Alfonso and Livia have been the visionairies of the idea. I think now it has or is fully comig to fruition. A job well done. If you spend time with them, you maybe lucky enough to visit their farm, which is where the all the food comes from. This was a real treat.

The suite I stayed in was fabulous too. They only have a few suites. Each suite is different in design, scale and size. Yet, all that I saw, looked fabulous. The only downside being wifi strength is hit and miss in the suite.

I would sum it all up with 3 words, passion, ingredients and family. I felt very much apart of their family. There aren't many places I want to return to, yet this is firmly one of them. Roll on 2010!

I've been staying at Don Alfonso for eight years, and I return at least twice a year because it's the rare destination that is simply too good to pass up. They renovated the hotel a few years ago, and the new look is spectacular. Every detail is curated, charming, and thoughtful, from the fabrics on the bedspread to the fact that the rooms are named after herbs. (The handmade pillows are an especially nice touch. I wanted to steal them.) Think of the room as an amuse-sense before your meal, which is the main reason to come to Don Alfonso. And that meal (or, if you're lucky, those meals) -- innovative, full of heart, and leave-you-speechless delicious.

From the instant you step onto this small estate in St. Agata and are offered a drink to ease the journey, Don Alfonso wants you to know that your pleasure is their business. The smiling owners are ever-present to see to it that you experience perfection at every turn. The two-story cottage we stayed in, with its charming furnishings, was just lovely and gave us the feeling we were tucked far away from the real world in a home rather than in a hotel. We almost had the sense that we were in another time. The bathroom was particularly pleasing, as was our private garden.

Despite the comparative bleakness of the town that surrounds it, Don Alfonso provided a perfect setting for our honeymoon getaway.

We were saling around the Amalfi coast in a sailing yacht and booked a night away at Don Alfonso to celebrate me and my wife's wedding anniversary. It had been very hot on board our boat and we were looking forward to a night away in a cool comfortable bed. The hotel and restaurant were recommended by the charter company and I had no idea what I was getting myself in for!

We took a cab from the centre of Sorrento which cost us 40 Euro. The road winds round and round until you get to a village high up above Sorrento.

We were dropped off outside and whisked into the bibliotek by the manager. He addressed us by our names from the outset (it is not a big hotel) but my sister in law had booked it online from the UK so was suprised they knew who we were. In the bibliotek (sort of library) we were welcomed and asked for our photo ID. Unfortunately we had left them on the boat and Italian law says that you need ID to check into a hotel. Fortunately teh charter company sorted us out with a well versed fax!

We were then taken up to our room. The hotel is VERY swish, in an unusual way! The use of colours is very good but there i no point on describing the two tone pink corridors or the yellow and purple rooms since it will put off the traditionalists out there. The decor is immaculate, the floors polished hard woodand the lift lined with polished mirrors.

Our room (a junior suite) was perfect - great decor, emperor sized bed, flat screen TV, WOW armchair. The bathroom was beautifully appointed with water jets in the bath and a dustbin lid shower. It had hi-spec double glazed windows which blocked out ALL noise from the street, plush shutters on teh outside that blocked out ALL the light when required. We might have been biaised due to that fact we had been sleeping on a boat for the previous four days but we loved it. See our other reviews to see what standards we are used to! Hidden in an antique cabinet was a safe and a minibar. There was wifi.

We dressed for dinner, as best we could. My wife, looking chic as ever, dazzled the staff in the restuarant but my inappropriate shirt and footwear did raise an eye brow (or five). It is a smart restuarant. I was unaware of the two Michelin stars at that point!

We chose the 8 course degustivation menu. It was very good. It knocked the spots off L'Enclume (the other gastro michelin place we have been to). You really felt like you were getting your monies worth and there was NO room left at the end of the meal. We sat down for dinner at 8.30 and finished at 12. There was just enough gap between courses to avoid restlessness!

We had :

Two glasses of vintage prosecco
A bottle of champagne
Two glasses of desert wine

Octopus
Duck
Aubergine
Seafood dumplings
Fish
Lamb
Cheese
Deserts
Anniversary cake

We were slightly embrassed as we could not eat as much of the deserts and cake as we were full because there was ALOT of delicious food.

Just before we left for bed they asked us whether we would like breakfast in bed or by the pool. We chose by the pool at 10am.

After the best nights sleep in at least five days, we had a leisurely breakfast beside the pool. Leave time for breakfast since it takes an hour and we had a cab booked for 11. Breakfast was a simple eggs and bacon, fruit, pastries etc with good coffee. Excellent.

Just before we departed we were taken on a tour of the wine cellars which are amazing. Apparently the tunnels were dug in 600 BC. Right at the bottom of the old well shaft is where they keep the strong cheeses. It is well worth the many steps and risking server clostaphobia.

On departure we paid a bill of 677 euros, which was kind of what I was expecting. dinner was 145 euros per head (set menu) and the room 325 euros. We were given a nice gift of some pasta and olive oil from the organic farm that the hotel owns.

We loved it at Don Alfonso. Ignore anyone who says that it is overpriced are just plain miserable! It is a two star Michelin restuarant in a beautiful location, I believe it is on the top ten restuarants in Italy, plus it has the bonus of having great rooms to stay in (you may have to redo your own house when you get home, though!)

If I was to change anything I would encourage the owner to stop coming and telling you all about the organic farm she owns since she told us three times!

Treat yourself - it is well worth it!
