“Hidden gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2011

Club is a practically village, consisting of houses and apartments. Rooms are very spacious, location of the overall facility is moderately ok, considering the fact that you will most probably not be visiting just Heviz Spa, but also surroundings, so you will need a car for that anyway. Parking is quite far from the room which you may get, which is not a problem in good weather, however if raining logistic for luggage transport from your car to apartment may be difficult. They have trolleys for that. Everything is fine, nothing to complain about. Breakfast is rather dull, however with only a few small simple changes this could be made way more attractive. (like cooked eggs, fresh cheese, nutella, croissants, local pates, some local pastry - missed ) - of course if you choose to take it, ours was included in the room price, which was quite low, from booking.com.
Surroundings of the Club is beautiful, very "feel-like-home". Both indoor and outdoor pool exist, the indoor pool is rather small and a towel "logistic" a bit unusual.
Free Wlan for checking up the news on your laptops or phones in a lobby !

We had 2 rooms through RCI and bought the "7 days of Abbazia feeling" package for an extra room. We arrived at about 2 PM on a Saturday but by 4 PM there was a long lineup to check-in since Saturday is the changeover day. The front desk people were great - all spoke english well, and they were very helpful. We were disappointed and frustrated trying to book riding because the riding staff did not speak any english and we did not speak any german. There was a 12,000 HUF service charge per room and 300 HUF/person/day tourist tax paid at time of checkout. The lounge chairs at the pool deck were "reserved" with towels early each morning but seemed to remain vacant most of the day. Many families with small children and there is a shallow play pool for kids. It was hot, and with no air conditioning, the west facing rooms were uncomfortable in the evening. Internet is only available in the registration lobby (300 HUF for 30 min). You can use the one resort computer (with Hungarian keyboard) or hook up your laptop to their modem by cable.

The restaurant food was excellent, but it is run separately from the resort so you had to pay in Forints (no credit cards) for each meal. There was different entertainment each night playing Hungarian music. Heviz is very close (a 10 min walk) and has good restaurants too. Mosquitoes were having a good feed too if you were seated on the outdoor patio.

The Lake Balaton region has excellent paved bike paths everywhere and you can borrow bikes from the resort - take a GPS to retrace your route back ;-)

Dear "KnB_CDN"

Thank you for taking your time to write this detailed review.
I heartily hope that you had a nice holiday in our hotel, and as you mentioned some occasions which caused you inconvenience, I take the opportunity to inform you about the changes made in these concerns.

The restaurant is now under the hotel's management, so it is fully possible to add the food and drink consumption to your room bill.

Since your visit we made WIFI available in the lobby of the main building for free.
Of course, the lobby computer is still at the disposal of our guests who do not owe laptops or other mobile internet-capable devices.

I am sorry about the inconvenience you experienced by booking our horse riding services; if you encounter language difficulties, our front-desk team will gladly be at your disposal to help.

I would like to thank you again your review, and hope you will return to us soon - there are many more things waiting for you to explore :-)

Best regards:

Peter Nagy

I think that the only other review here gives an impressiuon that might (for all I know) have been valid at the time, but it proved misleading for us at least.
Granted, the self-catering aspect of the studio would struggle to sustain a family for a week, it being a genuine "kitchenette", but at restaurant prices in Heviz and elsewhere, one would hardly need to use the kitchen other than for (maybe) breakfasts or snacks.
We (family of four) found the resort clean, well-presented, simple but pleasant, and perfectly well-stocked with the necessities - decent swimming pool, plenty of spa facilities at unbelieveable bargain prices, a decent shop, etc etc.
The resort is within easy walking distance of Heviz rather than the town in the address on Trip Advisor, and Heviz is a very pleasant find: rather catering for the ageing European population attracted to the vast thermal lake, it nevertheless has a charming and attractive personality with a distinctly old-Europe feel. Eating out is superb value: a family of four, including two teenage or older kids with proper adult appetities, can eat at a good restaurant, with one to two rounds of drinks, coffes, etc, for under thirty five pounds sterling easily. In Heviz, try Magyar Csarda - great atmosphere with Hungarian Gypsy violinists (sounds naff, actually wasn't - almost jazz-like playing), and very fair food.
There is, however, a limit to what you can do for more than a few days, and four nights pretty much exhausted our interest. Allied to a three-plus hour drive from Bratislava, it's a bit of a schlep, and Lake Balaton, the supposed main purpose of the area's tourist appeal, is distinctly uninteresting - just a vast inland lake with very few defining features - but there are some: the castle at Szigliget is worth the easy climb for nice views and an interesting restoration, the pretty lake at Tapolca has good eating places around it (plus a small and cheap underground lake boating experience, and some good looking vineyards (although we didn't indulge.
But...what is it about the Hungarian character that makes the local populace so struggle to even attempt to be welcoming? I don't want to get swept up into sweeping generalisations, but I suppose I will: to be scowled at by passing walkers when waiting in a car to let them pass, or tutted at in bakeries while ordering a coffee and cake, is a weird experience. Granted, we struggled to work with the language in any way, but it simply looked like years of communist oppression had left a pretty depressed peoples!
In the scheme of things, a minor comment, as the place is very pleasant although far from spectacular. The resort is fine, well-tended, decent RCI-fare.

Dear Marro

Thank you for your kind words and nice review - you honour us by writing such a detailed walkthrough about our region.

I strongly suggest you to return to the Lake Balaton a bit later, as it shows its best face in mid- to late summer by presenting many wine festivals and cultural events. Of course, public and city beaches can also be found around the lake. Our program-organizing team is ready to assist you hunting down the best entertainment in the neighbourhood.

And I did not even speak about the wintertime: ice skating on the frozen lake then having a glass of hot, spicy wine is second to none :)

With kindest regards:

Peter Nagy

Considering this resort is used by RCI, the accommodation was very much below standard. Having stayed here for a week, we were more than ready to come home. For a self catering apartment, there was little equipment or luxury. No oven, dishwasher, washing machine, iron, ironing board, kettle settee or comfy chairs. The sink area and work tops were all wood, which was stained and starting to rot from being wet as this was used for a draining board as well. Very little storage space for you own food. When you arrive you have to pay for the cleaning service, use of car park and swimming towels, which is about £40 for the week, there is also a daily tourist tax to pay. With regard to the cleaning, the sheets and swimming towels were not changed all week. One day the cleaners did not turn up at all. We had to use the same T Towel all week. There was little entertainment in the evenings other than if you chose to go to the buffet where electric piano music was played. With regard to the buffet, don't eat late as we did, because they will be clearing away around you, and no fresh food will be bought out. The pool area could do with a clean up as grass is growing in between the paving stones, and there are not enough mattresses for the sun beds. The tennis facilitys were excellent, 4 clay and 4 indoor courts, however can get pricey if you want to play everyday, as it costs about £6 for an hour. The riding stables were the cleanest I have ever seen, with excellent equipment and a brand new sand school. The reception staff speak good English, but mostly it is Hungarian or German visitors, so you can feel a little isolated if you yearn for some English company!
