“Aesthetically perfect - a dream”

This is my first trip advisor review I just had to share my experience with the world. If you are looking for a charming one of a kind aesthetically beautiful hotel situated right in the middle of the Pelio jungle a short drive from the most stunning sea in Greece this is your place. I went alone and ended up feeling part of the lovely Mantzios family. Boy the stories they have to tell! Blissfully comfortable beds, a breakfast that I had to take a picture of every morning because I couldnt get over how delicious it was. I would sit on the porch next to the fountain in the morning coolness eating from the blue porcelain plates and looking at the 1000 year old Palm tree right in front of me and wonder if it was living a dream! All the trails seem to start from the hotel and you can walk anywhere in the middle of the summer basically in the shade. I joked earlier that it was a jungle and it certainly would appear so. Dazzling flowers everywhere and a huge variety of plants. And the sea is so fresh my most memorable swims in Greece are from these beaches. I hope many more are lucky enough to have my experience.. :-)

This small, quaint, lovely hotel (actually a converted, traditional house) offers the best in Greek hospitality. The owners and staff are, in fact, an extended family that makes you feel like the most recent family members to arrive on Mount Pelion. The breakfasts and dinners are wonderful and, for the most part, are prepared by Christos who, in another life, was a chef in several good UK restaurants. From the hotel, you can enjoy several nature hikes or easily reach the sea for swimming or kayaking. We certainly intend to return to the Lost Unicorn the next time we are in Greece! Thank you Claire and Christos!

Our plans were fluid so we called The Lost Unicorn at the last minute and they had space. It was a treat to stay there and be dwell for two nights in the area of Tsagkarada. We walked to the next village center on the footpaths where getting lost was another opportunity to see the local architectural style both loved and dilapidated. It was just warm enough to have breakfast outside and the food choices were varied and delicious. It is very peaceful and we spent an enjoyable two days relaxing and exploring. They recommended an excellent restaurant, Aleka's. We recommend the eggplant cheese baked dish and the oven baked meats. We also drove to the beach below and had a fish dinner overlooking the sea. Both Clair and Christos have worked very hard to provide an exceptional experience and it shows.

If you ever think 'stop the world, we want to get off' then go here! It is a soul-nourishing retreat from the everyday hustle, bustle and stress of the modern world and will stay with you long after you have left. Clare and Christos are charming and knowledgeable hosts, and their historic Pelion mansion house is jam packed with character and curiosities. It is also in the most beautiful location, with a terrace one could sit on all day in the midst of a natural paradise. Pelion is a place of incredibly luxuriant woods and forests of vibrant, sun-dappled greens, thanks to that amazing light which seems to be unique to Greece. We used The Lost Unicorn as our base for travelling round Pelion in a hire car, and it really is a great place to come back to after exhausting walks up and down the kaldarimi. Breakfasts here are generous, peaceful, and more personal than in a hotel chain; we can't comment on dinner because we ate at local Greek tavernas. If nightlife and international hotels are what you like you will hate it; if you love nature, character and tranquillity, you will adore it.

From the mansions most hotels, a lot of clean in a great location surrounded by green manicured garden to relax and traditional food and breakfast and lunch. I would recommend it to friends and other romantic outing.

HOTEL: A hotel with character!
The location of the hotel is right behind the Church of Agia Paraskevi in Tsagarada. It cannot be seen from the road, but it is surrounded by lush vegetation -a paradise-like spot. We were here the end of July.

We came for dinner actually but I was curious to see what the rooms of the hotel are like so that I know in case I wish to book here when we return to Pelion again next year.

The rooms are not that big but are nicely appointed, clean and have a kind of a classic style. Balconies are very small though!

Coffee/tea facilities are provided and there are nice toiletries in the bathroom –the Oriflame brand, in normal size. I saw several rooms and each one was differently decorated. All rooms are nice a few are kind of bigger than others. They are comfortable and the décor travels you.

The floor downstairs –lobby, library and corridor have a classic style too, but there are many things out there that don’t match. I find it over-packed in reality, but it has a style of its own, and many of the things out there are antiques.

The only negative is that it is not handicapped.

RESTAURANT:
“Exquisite Gourmet Dishes - Highly Recommended!”

Is it possible to find gourmet dishes in a traditional mountain village restaurant?

The answer is yes, and besides that, the Lost Unicorn is highly recommended for a romantic outing, a special celebration, or simply a normal dinner out.

Snacks/coffee: For people who wish to have a snack, the coffee shop of the Unicorn Hotel serves snacks and coffee at the grounds where the church is by the main square.

GARDEN: We had our dinner outside at the magical flower-filled terrace decorated with all kinds of colourful plants, nice light pots and a fountain. There are romantic hideaway corners to sit if you wish for a more romantic ambience. The gardens are surrounded by lush vegetation. The huge branches of the perennial plane trees of the square extend up to the garden of the restaurant and it is really like an earthly paradise out here.

CUISINE: Portions are big and everything we had was of exceptional taste and presentation. It is obvious that fresh ingredients and virgin olive oil are used in the kitchen because the taste of everything was super.

THE MENU: Out of the 4 starters we had the Roast Sweet Red Pepper with Feta cheese €8.00. (All starters cost the same) I can still remember the taste and colours of this dish!
The mixed salad we had with pear and walnut dressing made the salad flavorsome and mouthwatering. It was superb. Salads rank between €6.00 -€9.00.

MAIN COURSES: The list of the main course is tempting with dishes ranking from €12.00 – 18.50. The latter and most expensive one is the Fillet Steak with Cream & Wild Mushroom Sauce.
We however had the Confit of Duck with caramelized onions & Orange. I loved every bite and it was exquisite. It is highly recommended and it costs €14.00.
My husband had the Slow-roast Lamb with garlic, rosemary & red wine gravy for €16.00. The lamb was tender and juicy –I could probably call it a gastronomical delight!

DESSERT: Speaking of dessert, well… get ready for a taste of heaven.
We had a sweet delight (ravani) in syrup topped by a ball of ice cream, and a very tasty cheese cake.

The restaurant is superb in every way, and I recommend it for all the above reasons.

The owners and people who run this business are professionals and good hosts. Keep the good work up guys…We long to return.
