“A relaxing break”
Reviewed August 19, 2007

First impressions were that this hotel needs a bit of TLC as it is a bit dated. The surrounding area is rural and peaceful, just what we wanted. You do need to explore the surrounding area because there are some great places to eat. If you want to go out in the evening then taxis are fairly cheap and the island is lovely and green and very pretty. Overall this hotel could be made into a gold mine, with some modernising plus some of the staff need to smile more particularly the man at the bar, who can put you off your beer with his lack of friendliness, such a shame because when he smiles he looks so much more approachable.I would go back to Thassos but not so sure about the Coral hotel, for a cheap get away its fine, its fairly basic and fairly clean, but the best thing about this hotel is its setting, peace and quiet with olive trees everywhere, so if you want peace and quiet and a nice little pool but no frills then the coral is ideal.

My husband and I visited my mum and dad who were staying at the Coral hotel for 2 weeks and we joined them for the second week. They loved every minute of it and so did we. We had an unfortunate first night, the room had previously had some heavy smokers in and they had had a couple of days of rain so the room wasn't aired and there was a strong smell of smoke for the first night. However by the second night and an air freshener the room was pleasent smelling.
The rooms are very basic and very Greek. The fridge really helped as we could store drinks and breakfast in the fridge. The balcony was very spacious and the staff were extremely friendly, my dad is disabled and the staff were very helpful, even supplying my dad with a second matress.
Panos and Panioto were very nice and made our stay very enjoyable, happy hour was an added bonus too...
The surroundings are beautiful and it feels like you are in the middle of no where, you can really shut off from the world.
We had a fantastic stay and would definetly go back... I had my Birthday out there and the staff made it extra special for me, with cake and champagne, I was very spoilt...
Thassos as an Island is one of the best places I have ever been to it is like a little piece of paradise, all in all a very relaxing holiday with amazing beaches...

  • Disliked — The shower had no wall bracket you have to hold it in your hand, all a bit complicated especially after a few drinks

Having researched the island of Thassos for some weeks, my fiance and I were delighted to find the Coral Hotel as it appeared to be good value for money, well located and happily situated by a beautiful beach - as illustrated on the Web site.

However, on arrival - we were extremely disappointed. Having paid extra money on booking for a 2-3 person room, rather than a twin, we discovered the it was exactly the same as the others but with a chair bed shoved in the middle. This meant that we were forced to sidestep around the room to get from one side to the other. As we opened the door to the room we were greeted by a fowl stench of cigarette smoke. We, ourselves, are smokers - certainly not adverse to the subtle waft of nicotine, but we were appalled by the strength of the smoky smell in room. Although we lit scented candles for the first few days of the holiday it unfortunately lingered to the v end of the holiday.

As a summary of the room - it is very very small, but with a pleasant balcony. The bathroom is very basic with only a handheld shower head and no actual shower cubicle so the water goes absolutely everywhere!

The best thing about this hotel is the pool bar - it stays open to the early hours of the morning and is run by a friendly greek couple. Prices are high considering the location though.

If you are planning a trip to Thassos I would strongly consider that you do the following:

Hire a car - drive around the island... it is absolutely beautiful with many stunning coves and beaches. The best beach is definately golden beach - its very long and wide so no matter how crowded, you will definately get a good spot.

In Skala Rachoni where we stayed, on the way to Thassos town there is a hotel called Hotel Nisteri - we had lunch here several times and used their private beach which is fantastic. The sea is also exceptionally clean and clear.

The best nightlife is in Thassos town and we loved a Taverna called Zorbas, which is in a quaint little alley. The food is fantastic and the red wine extremely cheap and drinkable!!

In summary, Thassos is a beautiful island but if you are looking for anything kind of comfort, do not stay at the Coral as it is extremely basic.

My fiancee and I stayed here for one week in June 2007. The island itself is beautiful and I would definitely recommend hiring a car for several days.

The hotel is situated on the edge of Skala Rachoni, which is a small resort of a handful of hotels and tavernas. The beach is sandy and pleasant, but narrow and few sun loungers. Also, the sea in this resort is full of sea urchins. We didnt know about these before we booked - basically they are plants that attach to the sea bed and look like little hedgehogs. If you stand on them, the spikes stick into you! I just made sure I wore my flip flops when going into the sea! We didnt come across any sea urchins elsewhere on the island. There are a few tavernas within walking distance of the hotel and there is a supermarket about 100m away. One problem we encountered with this resort was the number of mosquitos and my fiancee was bitten many times!

The hotel itself is perfectly adequate for the money we paid. Basic, as expected, but clean. There was a fridge in the room and the air con was excellent (remote controlled so you can turn it on and off from the bed!). Large balconies. Quiet surroundings. Nice pool and pleasant pool bar.

There is a nearby bus stop with buses into Thassos Town (journey takes about 15mins), which is worth going to for shopping and for some nice tavernas and cafes. Unfortunately the service only runs during the day.

Definitely worth getting a car and doing the circuit of the island. Our favourite beach was Golden Beach - white sands, turqoise seas and a lovely setting. Also worth seeing is Alyki.

Overall, the island was beautiful and there are some excellent beaches (Golden Beach) and good restaurants (in Thassos Town). We paid £225 each and for that price it was a good value holiday. However if I had known I would have stayed at Golden Beach or Skala Potamia rather than our resort, which was quite remote, didnt have a good beach, and had a shortage of tavernas.

My girlfriend and I came at this hotel on July 21, 2006 and left it at the beginning of August with lots of great impressions. Hotel is situated 1 km from small place Skala Rahoniu and 5-10 minutes by car from Limenas (Thassos Town). For transportation, we used car but we noticed that bus stop is some 50m from hotel. Hotel is on quite and relaxing place, surrounded with olive trees. Some 200 meters from hotel, there is big supermarket. The hotel is clean and tidy as well as the room where we were. It had nice furniture, big terrace (5 meters wide), AC, big TV, small fridge, phone and hair drier. As this hotel has three floors and the surrounding is flat, there is no spectacular view but both, see view and mountains view on the other side, are very nice. For us two main additional attractions were Minah bird which every morning greeted us with “Good morning Sir” and two high palm trees like the ones from Beverly Hills boulevards. As far as we could conclude, one family runs the hotel. Young ones as well as older ones were very helpful, kind, polite so we felt very welcome. We had half board. Breakfast is standard – continental, that means every morning the same choice, but the dinner was different, large and delicious. Our recommendation is to take dinner. Hotel has volleyball filed and swimming pool with bar but we did not spend much time there because we wanted to visit the island with the car That is why we spent 10% of our time on the beach, which is some 150 meters from hotel. That beach is OK, it is 70 meters wide, and it has two bar-restaurants. Some people loved this sandy beach with normal entrance at the see and they spent lots of time there but as we visited almost all beaches on Thassos, we can say that there are much more attractive and better beaches. At the evening, we went for a walk and drink to Limenas but some times to a bar near the hotel. There are several very nice bars near the hotel, which are on the beach but for some reason they were empty. So, for evening out there is Limenas if you have a car because buses does not go at the evening. In general, this hotel is quite and nice place that could be perfect base camp for visiting the whole island, if you come with those intentions but also adequate place for the ones who whish to spent quite holiday without moving around.
