“Our Worst Family Holiday Ever!!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2009

GREEN SEA APARTMENTS, SKALA POTAMIA, THASSOS
May/June 2009
Resort: Fantastic. Traditional tavernas, beautiful little sandy beach by end jetty - shallow, clean and clear sea. Couple lovely souvenir shops. Plenty supermarkets.
Apartments: 4 bedded rooms have side mountain view - only 2/3 bed face pool/sea (Not told in brochure). Worst basic kitchen facilities ever had and this is our 9th greek island. Shower screen broken. Power point by only mirror broken and never fixed despite constant requests. Only 3 chairs for 4 of us. Very cramped apartments. Only plus was constant hot water.
OUR EXPERIENCE: Maria (family daughter-in-law who spoke perfect English) accused our 3 yr old son of crayonning/ruining 5 sheets (they were all covered in red) and demanded 50 Euros on spot until we paid. Knew he had got 2 feint lines off crayon night before on one sheet and said so but it should have washed out. She wouldn't believe us & sarcastically said I could take 5 sheets home & try and get them clean in my machine. She wouldn't budge til we paid up. In shock at what had just happened, husband rang Thomson 24/7 helpline, relayed events and they told him to get sheets off her, she'd no right speaking to us and demanding money like that which we would get back. Husband went off to find her and retrieve sheets. On closer inspection it was clearly red felt pen (which we didn't possess) and lady guest in same block agreed with us. Maria shoved money lback at me later, said Thomson had spoken to her and they would pay.
All very shook up. Told Rep Susan on her next visit & said wanted to move because felt so uncomfortable being there being falsely accused. Each time we went by pool, family were coming out & obviously talking about us. We resorted to going out for meals the back entrance and felt like criminals. Everywhere was booked solid except one which wanted 233 Euros extra for us to stay there which we couldn't afford.
4 days later, feeling a little less intimidated we went by pool for afternoon. Just talking to fellow guests when the old maid ("Mama"), who had smiled and waved at us 1/2 hour before, slams wet washing basket down at my feet with yet more red and purple inked sheets, starts yelling in Greek & pointing at my boys (aged 9 and 3) obviously accusing us again. It was humiliating, embarrassing & very upsetting with all the new arrivals from day before by pool listening. Couple we were talking to said how disgusting their behaviour was and gave us their home address in case we needed back-up. We were so upset just wanted to come home, which obviously we couldn't. At that moment Rep Susan turned up to see how we were anyway following first incident. Told her we weren't prepared to stay another night.
She was fantastic. and even moved us to our new accommodation in Thassos Town - Villa Eden, rightfully at no charge. What a contrast - family friendly greek husband Dimitri and english wife Denise with baby Lucas and 4 yr old Yannis who played with my boys by the pool for last few days of holiday.
This was our first break in 2 yrs and we have come home feeling like we need a holiday. We still don't know why we were victimised. We are not liars. There were other kids staying there too.
Have never come across anything like this in 35 yrs of travelling abroad, so i'm advising - DO NOT STAY HERE - ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN.

p.s. Thomson, and in particular Susan our Rep were fantastic.

Just returned from a week at Green Sea Studios. We got the 6.05 flight and were at the apartments by 12.30 UK time.
When we arrived the rooms were not ready and the cases had not arrived. As a previous reviewer explained, you leave the cases at the airport in Kavala and they are transported separately to the studios and dumped outside the gates! Luckily we had packed swimwear and towels in our hand baggage so could use the pool on arrival. While we waited my partner watched the Grand Prix on the TV behind the restaurant - this was the only time we saw that tv on and althought there are tvs in the rooms they are Greek tv only - not that we came on holiday to watch tv!

Our cases arrived an hour or so later and the room was ready soon after. The room was spacious for 2 and had the minimum equipment - toaster, electric kettle, 2 cooking rings. The shower room was the best we have had in Greece - even had a shower cubicle! Air con was 40 for a week and safe in the room 15 for a week.
The cleaner had an attitute and some days the room wasn't cleaned at all and bins not emptied till 7.30pm. Sheets changed once in a week stay - the norm I think?

We were a bit disappointed with the food at the restaurant on site - and also with food in general in the resort - we did like the ALKYONH though which is on the back road opposite the Albatros supermarket.

Prices - about 7 or 8 euros for stifado, kleftiko etc. Large draught Mythos- 2 euros, Gin and tonic - 4 euros, litre of local wine 6 euros. Sun beds are free at the hotel but on the beach they are 7 eiros a day including a parasol. Sea was very gentle most days. Rep said taxi to Thassos Town is 12 eoros. In Thassos we ate at The Twins which was good.

We got a bus to Thassos town (1.5 each way) and to Pagania (1.40 each way) One way tickets can be bought from Albatross supermarket (and others) and then buy return ticket in destination. In Thassos town get ticket at bus station which is opposite wher you are droppped off and is a good place to wait for bus as there are seats in the shade and ice creams etc.
Panagia well worth a trip - head up towards the church and fountain - very picturesque. Buses aremodern with air con.

Return journey. We had to leave our cases outside the gate at 6.45am and we had to get coach at 7.45 down the road a short way. Cases were waiting at airport but this was a good system as saved carrying them on/off ferry. Ferry trip about 30 mins - we got the 9 am ferry for our flight at 12.15 home to Gatwick. The Birmingham and Manchester flights were 1 and 2 hours later .

All in all it was a very relaxing resort - rather busier than the blurb had led us to believe - the food was a bit uninspiring and bland compared to othe islands we have visited.

If you have children there is a fun fair etc at the harbour end of the resort and a little "train" that runs through the resort.

We enjoyed but will not be going back.

The Green Sea apartments are in a lovely setting and are a good basic standard for Greece and are kept clean.
Loved the location 1 minute to the pool and 2 to the beach, set in a lovely bay 20 minutes walk each way with a good selaction of tavernas and bars, plus a few supermarkets and shops.
Only complaints are that the beds were hard ,but we managed, and the birds are really noisey!!!!
We hired a car for 3 days which was really worth doing, loved Aliki, Theologos and Panagia. Prefered Skala Potamia to Thassos town or Limenaria as they were a lot more touristy.
But most of all loved the chilled and no hassle atmosphere of Skala Potamia.

We returned yesterday and before my holiday I had a number of questions that I could not get answered, so I thought I would post here. Most importantly 500ml of Mythos or Amstel will cost 2Euros and you can cash travellers cheques at car rental offices such as Potos for 2% commision. The Green Sea Apts were very good and probably the best accom. we have had on a Greek holiday. We had a studio which had a separate bedroom and a single bed in the kitchen. There were minimal cooking facilities but with the cost of eating out I can't see anybody bothering with anything but making a salad. We ate at the Green Sea Restaurant for 12 nights out of 14, it was that good. Cost for 2 starters, 2 main dishes, 4pts of the said lager and 500ml house wine was about 35Euros. You could just about buy the drinks for that back in the UK. Air-con and safety deposit box are chargeable. Building work is in process either side at present so this led to a fair amount of moaning. In my opinion it was hardly noticeble and didn't detract from our enjoyment.
I do not normally bother with car hire but Thomson trips seemed expensive and the roads so quiet that I went to Potos on the back road and got a Punto for 3 days for 55Euros. Pauline and Martin who run the office were very helpful and gave excellent advice on places to visit. A round tour of the island was about 60 miles and after it we both concluded that we were staying in the best bit. If you intend to do any serious walking then take boots because of the prevalence of snakes. Kate, the Thomson rep was also very helpful and had a good working knowledge of the island.
The weather was not brilliant as we had 2 days of rain and 3 offish days but the rest of it was very pleasant. Apparently the rain was much needed, but we could have done without it!
