“fantastic.....”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2011

Just had 2 fantastic weeks at the Santa Catherina apts.

There are pros and cons for these apartments

Cons- it is a trek every day to get down to the harbour, there is a lot of un finished building work going on and there isn't much of a bar service ( only due to the girls who work there are busy doing everything else around the building ).
Pros- fantastic views from the pool area and also all rooms have sea views, if like us you like to relax around the pool its very quiet and at times only 4 people around the pool all day, you can take drinks and food from your room around the pool, all the restaurants we visited in the harbour and the sorrounding back streets served fantastic food, you can not go wrong.

One tip i would give is if you are hiring a car there is a Lidl supermarket about 10 minutes away which is a lot cheaper than the supermarkets around the harbour...( or like a couple we met book a taxi and do a big shop in one go!!!!!! red wine and fanta or even chicken gravy!!!!!! you know who i mean ).

Just go and enjoy your holiday you will not be dissapointed, just be prepared for both the landing and the take off, to say the least its an experience..

Very surprised when we arrived at the apartments - absolutely beautiful reception looks so fancy. Our rooms were ready for us when we got there - and my bag was even carried to the room by the mini bus driver; although he doesn't speak much English!
Again another surprise; the living area was massive with plenty of places to sit - the same with the bedroom, we had 3 doors leading to two balconies from both of the rooms. The kitchenette was even big for what I was expecting - a big kettle; a hob (which was placed above a wooden drawer? - so we had to keep an eye on that whilst cooking) with a large ring and small ring - they both worked but the switch for the little ring was broken so some guess work was involved when cooking. The oven heated up really quickly - but the grill part of it we couldn't seem to get to work. Fortunately we had a toasty maker - thought this was a bit random, but it became a regular meal - although it was more warm bread than toasty. Fridge and freezer were a great size - lots of storage and plenty of utensils - no draining board though? Great size bathroom incl. a bath, but we couldn't get any hot water; at the end of the holiday we found out we weren't the only ones! (On the hot days this was bliss but the rest of the time it was take a deep breath and chuck yourself under the cold shower!) Towels and linen were changed almost everyday; although we saw cleaning being done it wasn't great, the floors were constantly dirty and dusty to the extent I'd have to wash my feet and stick flip flops on to walk across and get into bed. Also not sure if it's the minerals in the water but all the sinks and bath etc. always had grubby water marks on them that didn't seem to want to budge - I tried my hand at cleaning it too as it got on my nerves a bit but it didn't make much difference. Re-reading this it sounds really bad, but it wasn't dirty, dirty and it wouldn't put me off going again.

On the plus side; the views from our room and the rest of the buildings were amazing - and totally worth all the walking up and down to the apartments we did. Although the immediate view down was of new apartments being built at Santa Catharina; it was a little off putting but you got used to it - I think when the apartments are finished they will either improve the view from the original apartments of ruin it depending on how high they build the ones below.

Now the pool(s) - were fabulous; never shared the pool with more than 2 people and almost always had it to ourselves - found that most people preferred sunbathing to swimming; that really wasn't for us! Although there were always plenty of sun loungers spare. There was also a little kiddies pool at the end or the large one.

The woman that has been working there for the past two seasons spoke very good English; we got on well with her - she tried to offer us complimentary Ouzo; one was enough thanks! She also said we could use her computer at reception behind the desk if we wanted to check emails, facebook etc... Lovely lady always up for a chat. The other lady working there was Bulgarian - she didn't speak much English but she'd offer us a complimentary drinks and a smile + hello every time we saw her.

Now the journey up and down to apartments: Our holiday was a package deal with Thomson so transfers we're included but our location however meant we had to be taken up to our apartments on a mini-bus as the bus couldn't get up there. Put it this way - there were more people than seats on that mini-bus! But it was all good fun.
After reading reviews I thought it was going to be a nightmare getting up and down to the apartments as we couldn't get a hire car. But it's not as bad as it sounds - we walked down everyday and it took us no more than 15mins to get to the main road which was then easy to follow into town (turning right). We even walked back up a few times - but if it's not for you a taxi back is just 6 euros.

All in all a few minor issues but nothing in comparison to the great holiday we had.

Room Tip: For the best view - a room on the 1st or 2nd floor on the right handside (when facing the view).

We have just returned from a week at the Santa Catherina. The studios are situated high up in the hills around 3km walk from the town and marina (30 min downhill walk).
The rooms are clean and have basic cooking facilities. They are cleaned daily and clean bath towels provided. Some areas of the complex are unfinished and do look a little bit unsightly. All staff (only two) are friendly and helpful.

The pool area is quiet most of the time. The sun loungers are a little uncomfortable as they have no mats and the pool has a tendency to collect flies and bugs – which is a little unpleasant to swim in at times.

All rooms have sea views (the view is very beautiful). The pool area can also been seen from all rooms. We had requested a room not on a ground floor, but were given a room on the lower part of the complex. Beware if you request a room location / type from the travel company, it does not mean that the owner of the Santa Catherina can/will accommodate the request.

Health and Safety was not their strong point – the complex is not geared up for young children and some of the construction areas are open and could be dangerous.
If you are expecting a lively atmosphere then this is not the place for you.

It is very quiet (which suited us), the bar was hardly ever opened and was closed in the evenings. Most evenings we walked / drove to the town to eat. The walk is very picturesque and enjoyable. However it is quite a long walk (at least 30 minutes). There is a shortcut which makes it a bit shorter (look for the stone wall and the lady in the garden with the black dog). A cab back to the studios from the town is recommended and costs 5 – 6 euro.

There are many places to eat in the marina (which is also very picturesque). We ate at ELIA (located at the end of the parade of restaurants). The food here was great and the average cost of dinner for two including drinks was about 40 euro. The second place we ate was IRODION, once again really good food and a variety of dishes.

We hired a car for six days which was great fun. As the studios are remote there are no super markets in close proximity. The closet market is in the marina at the bottom of the steep hill, but I tended to use the Cash and Carry 4km away from town. Samos has some very interesting places to visit and some nice beaches. The car cost 150 euro for the six days.

Samos is a beautiful Greek Island and their way of life is very easy going and relaxed. The major downside of our holiday were the mosquitoes. As the studios are high in the hills we were plagued with them, as hard as we tried, we could not stop them from biting us during the night. I would recommend taking some mosquito repellent and after bite. There are some small improvements the owner could make to improve the place.
In reflection we would go back to Samos and would stay at the Santana Catherina. However the flies and mosquitoes are a turn off. Solve this issue and you are well on your way to having a great holiday...

Just back from 2 week stay at Santa Catherina Samos. On arrival we were allocated room 12, a ground floor studio situated in an annexe to the right of the main building. As we were looking forward to the panoramic view we were shocked and extremely disappointed with this apartment. Our terrace looked out onto a hilly wasteland (of which we were at the bottom) with a huge electricity pylon at top of hill. Panoramic view? No! To the right we had the slightest glimpse of the sea from an almost basement level. We immediately called rep who came to meet us. There were no other rooms available except a low priority room at far end of complex. We viewed room and whilst it was not great it had a view of sea. We took room but it was not a good start to holiday. The room and bathroom were spotless, however, the next morning whilst having coffee we were confronted with an offensive smell which was coming from a drain in front of terrace. The owner put bleach down drain every night but smell did not abate. To be fair he was extremely helpful throughout and after a week we were moved to room 17 which was everything we had hoped for as per brochure. Spacious rooms, gorgeous views and large top floor balcony. We enjoyed our holiday and would go back to Santa Catherina as George is continuing to extend his complex and has said the lower floor rooms will be utilised as offices. We enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the location and views were breathtaking.

When we arrived at the apartments we found them to be clean and spacious with good views down to the marina and surrounding coastline.

We did find however that although our sheets and towels were changed regularly after we had been there for a week there was no cleaning done ! We got into our second week and the toilet would have been smelling somewhat if I had not kept it clean as well as the dust and debris which was rapidly building up on the floor. So I ended up cleaning the floors throughout the villa and bathroom myself as there were three of us staying in it and in the very hot weather it would not have been very hygenic. Ants and other vermin would have had a field day !!!!!! I do appreciate however that it was the last two weeks of the season and they only had one maid doing everything !!!! Not her fault !!!!!!

Another point to note was that the owner started the process of building more apartments and sadly bought in the bulldozers on our last day with much loud work and exacavations going on - whilst we were trying to enjoy our last day relaxing there - a bit naughty I thought !

As he intends building more I do think he needs to take on board that the steps down to villas numbered in their 20's on the right hand side of the complex facing towards the sea steps and walkways have not been finished off to a safe standard including the drive down into the car park was positively wicked - there was even a raised man hole cover down the bottom of the steps that had not been levelled off - how my poor Mum did not fall over it I don't know and she is not old ! If he can build more apartments he needs to address these issues first !!!!!!!!! He obviously has the money !!!!!!

It was so spacious inside the apartment that I felt he had plenty of room to provide a bit more kitchen worktops and a cooker with two large electric rings instead of one large one and a tiny one only suitable for those little boiling pots they use out there - not very good for self catering (on the cooking side) and it would have been nice to have had a plastic drainer by the sink as there was no metal drainer just a sink - a bit daft we thought. Where do you drain your dishes etc ?????

Come on it's sold as self-catering accommodation !!!!!

The accomodation exceeded our expectations with 2 huge rooms, small cooker and large fridge, lovely full bath room and a large patio with splendid sea and mountain views. Cleaned every day and fresh towels several times a week. The pool is exceptionally large for size of place and we almost always had it to ourselves. This place is really cut off, a good 30 minute walk to the town, when you know the cut through route! The place has a lovely reception area and bar but they are not staffed, the place was completely dead during the evening. A little lacking in character, but if you want 'peace and quiet', above average accomodation, great views and don't mind being high on a hill, it's a good choice.

This was our first trip to a Greek Island for 25 years and we were most impressed. The 16 apartments were built 4 years ago, high up overlooking the Marina (not to be confused with the port). The accommodation was extremely spacious and very well equipped, well serviced and cleaned daily. The balcony was large with a beautiful sea view, equipped with table and chairs. The pool was large with plenty of sun beds. Safes and Air con was available at extra cost. Breakfast was available at 7 euros, and Andrea would deliver bread to us each morning if we ordered in advance. The outside area was rather unfinished - needed some landscaping. The walk down a steep hill to town took 35 minutes, but a taxi back took 5 minutes at 5 euros. Most people had a car for their stay. We found an old track down to two beautiful beaches for swimming overlooked by a hotel at Proteus Beach, where sunbeds and umbrellas were available each day at 5 euros for the 2.
It is well worth hiring a car to see the island, it is very beautiful, stunning coves and traditional villages, together with being a good walking area.
In Pythagorian there are plenty of boat trips available, good restaurants line the port, all the menus are similar, but a very good pizza restaurant, Strada, better than Italian pizzas, and an authentic family run restaurant, Pegasus on the left on the road to the airport.
