“Fifth Visit”
Reviewed November 1, 2011

We had the pleasure of visiting Latania Apartments again in September this year, and as you can see it is our fifith visit in two years. We can't recommend these apartments enough. They are certainly the best we have stayed in and we have been going to Stalis for 22 years now. For a start you get a microwave, toaster, kettle, which are unheard of in other apartments and certainly weren't available the first time we visited Crete. We've seen some of the negative comments and can't believe what we've seen on them. Cockroaches in the reception area? Well we've never seen them in all the time we've been going there. Clean towels every day - not unless you are staying in a 5* hotel. These are self-catering apartments - not a hotel. Anyway, we were very pleased, again - the rooms were cleaned regularly. The towels and sheets were changed regularly and we have no complaints at all in that direction.

Once again we thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with the staff again. Angela who is most helpful. Manos in the bar (I did like the cocktails!!) The owners are lovely and also very helpful. We watched Stelios clean the pool area every morning over a cup of tea on the balcony - so we knew that was clean!!

Our only gripe, if you like, is that Sasha was missing this year - we hope he is back when we return next year.

Room Tip: Choose a room that is on top floor.

The Latania fully deserves its high rating, and I agree with most of the positive points that others have made. It is well located, a few metres off the beach road (and so at least the more distant appartments may be a little quieter than places facing the road). We stayed in a large studio, which was a little basic but very clean. One of the most important features is that all the staff were excellent. In particular, Manos was a wise and humourous philosopher at the bar (eg the sunloungers on the beach belong to the cafes, but the sand belongs to God! In other words, the sand is free). He was very helpful (eg making some phone calls; charging a MP3 player on the computer).

Minor quibbles: the pool perhaps required 'skimming' a little more often (not sure what was trying- and failing- to swim in there!); air conditioning is perhaps a litle excessive at 50 EUR per week (especially towards end of season when cooler outside). However, these are relatively minor issues. If you want a clean, quiet place with excellent staff at a reasonable price, the Latania is difficult to beat.

I shall return to these lovely family run apartments very clean and light airy bedrooms. The pool area is excellent to pass your day away lazing in the sun, and the greek salads for lunch 10 out of 10 with an ice cold beer. Yes value for money a must and a lovely little town to stroll around in the evenings so much to see and do.
I have done a great deal of traveling all over the world and stay in 5star premium so expect the best but its so nice to have that short break away with family knowing that when you arrive all will be just as you expect........this is the place to book for that year after year quick breat away, I would recomend booking a cheap flight and going direct with the hotel the rooms are so good value.
Whilst we stayed the people also staying were great and friendly and several people had spent several holidays there, so thats a good reccomend, go on get the hotel booked you wont regret it. There was 3 of us aged 60, 24 and 5 something for us all.
Thaks Latania for a lovely break away. PS Oh there was one thing that spoiled my time at Latania,,,,,,,OH THERE WAS ONE THING THAT SPOILT ARE TIME AT LATANIA THE THOMAS COOK REP LAURA SHE DROVE US MAD but I wont go into that!!!!!

Room Tip: There are rooms for 5 people really good value and I'm told all rooms will have TVs next seaso...

After experiencing a bad week staying in Malia, just had to get out and find somewhere ourselves, after looking at many we def got the best of all.
Massive studio room, double bed plus 3 sofabeds, great kitchen with all facilities, microwave etc (don't see them often in Greece)
Above all very very clean and friendly staff. Sheets, towels changed regularly and apt cleaned daily.
Great bar and pool area, could have asked for more.....
Thanks to all

When we first arrived we were quite shocked at how small the apartments were (we stayed in a studio apartment and this has to be the smallest one I’ve ever stayed in, fell over the bed three times while staying there got a big bruise to prove it) although the terrace at the front of our apartment was very big and private with a little balcony at the back with a view of the pool. We noticed how hot it was in the room straight away but no-one had explained anything about the air conditioning to us so I went back down stairs to reception to ask how to turn it on, I was then asked for €50 for a remote control for the air-conditioning which I’ve never had to pay for anywhere else I have stayed before but you had to buy it because it was sooooooooo hot! You also have to pay for your toilet roll (again I have never had to buy my own toilet roll on holiday before and I’ve stayed in lots of self catering apartments) and the safe was €25 for a week.

The maid cleans your room daily but does not change the towels daily so don’t make the mistake of leaving them on the floor to be changed because when we got back to our room after being out all day and wanting to have a shower to freshen up to find your old towels picked up off the floor and folded on your clean sheets not nice so I had to go down stairs to reception to ask for clean towels and although the receptionist was a very nice lady and very helpful the look she gave me said it all. We also had a bit of an ant problem in our room, come home one night to find ants all over the floor, climbing on our shoes and suitcases – nice!

The pool area and the bar are very nice and clean, although the pool is a lot smaller than it looks in the photos and there’s not a lot of space for sun beds, the food served at the bar is very nice. They have a barbeque night on Saturdays but unfortunately we didn’t get to attend that but it did look like a lot of fun and looked quite busy.

The location of Latania is brilliant – it couldn’t get any better than this, right next to all the restaurants, bars and Shops, Malia is just half hour walk from Stalis as well, the beach is just across the road, we took a ride on the ‘Happy train’ well worth it €10 each for a hour and a half round trip. The only thing is at night you can hear some noise from the bars, I think this is because the studio apartments are located at the front of the building but if you stay in the one bedroom or two bedroom apartments they are located at the back and away from the main road where the noise comes from, still got a good nights sleep every night though, the beds are very comfy.

The only other thing I would like to stress is if you have a late flight booked they do not have a luggage room to store your luggage so they put it in reception for all to see, but you can keep you room longer, but you have to pay €5 an hour, which I think is a good money maker for them because I think a lot of people would rather do that then leave their luggage in reception all day, unless you intend to sit with it all day!

So overall really great location, good pool area and pool bar with nice food, the studio apartments are not the biggest but you get what you pay for but I think they should mention when you book it that you have to pay an extra €50 for air conditioning as we could have used that for food for a day but because we didn’t know we had to draw more money out!

we arrived in the middle of the night and were welcomed by a very friendly face and shown to our room.

The next morning we went to reception to pay for air con and the safe and was greeted by Angela. The whole way through our stay, Angela could not do enough for us - even producing maps from her handbag and making calls to the transfer company.

The rooms are clean and well presented with a daily service by a maid who always seemed to be working.

The pool area was exceptionally clean and had a selection of lilo's and footballs to play with. A selection of chairs and beds were also available to place where you wanted. There were a choice of two sets of toilets and showers available which were again nice and clean.

Manos the barman was another friendly face that seemed to always be there to greet us. If ordering drinks from the bar, there are no small measures! We did not eat at the bar but a special karaokee and bbq was aranged for the saturday night and for 10 euros a head was a good deal.

The beach was close to the appartment along with the main strip for restaurants, supermarkets and shops yet the noise couldnt be heard from the appartments.

We would definately recommend staying here and would be happy to return ourselves.

Room Tip: The rooms are on split rooms so ask for a ground floor if you have difficulties with stairs.
