“Professionally Run Hotel”
Reviewed September 3, 2010

Stayed all inclusive through Olympic Holidays. Our room was at the top of the complex however on arrival we were advised our cases would be brought to our room by the conceierge. They arrived within minutes of us reaching the room. The room was large with a long terrace facing the pool and within ten yards of the pool bar. The room was spotless and any problems are dealt with quickly. We found the staff to be courteous and professional, they may appear to be more formal than other Greek apartments we have stayed at previously, however we put this down to the fact that most of the guests were German and there maybe a greater expactation of a more formal service required, if you engaged in conversation and British with them and they realised you were British they did react in what we would call a more Greek manner. There is entertainment which is ok. The food consists of a Buffet which was superior to other places the choice is wide and changes daily, there is a chef in the buffet who cooks items such as steak, fish etc each night. You can also eat a a tratorria on site and a Greek restaurant once a week bothe were very good. The all inclusive runs from 10am to 11pm the choice of drinks is fine, between 3pm and 4pm coffee and cake as well as ice cream is served apart from that there are no snacks available however the dining room does not close for breakfast till 10am the reopens for lunch at 12.30 and closes at 2.00 so it is not as though you should be desperate to eat in the meantime, there is a mini market on site where you can buy snacks if you wish. The only negaitve was the lack of information given about what is available in the all inclusive. You are given a map and bullet points of opening times but you are not told you have to pre book for the trattorria and taverna which caused us a little embarrassment when we turned up and asked for a able without booking. We were also not told that the taverna doubles as a bar for guests on the beach. However all in all this is a clean professionally run hotel well placed for the rest of the amenities in Stalis. If you are looking for a holiday where you will mix with the majority of British guests then this is not for you, if you are looking for a peaceful hassle free holiday with almost everything you want on site then this is for you

We book through Neckermann/Thomas Cook. The restaurant was fine and buffet food quite varied for the mass catering they were doing, staff in resturant friendly, pools OK, but the room was a HUGE disappointment and nothing like the brochure pictures. Quite dark, cramped, basic, tatty and dilapidated and really really filthy. We found dirty clothes belonging to the previous occupants in the room, the bathroom really needed to be scrubbed with bleach and flooded everytime you took a shower as the tray so small and cracked, and there were dirty black fingerprints all over the tables, doors and fridge which I think could have been removed if someone had bothered using a cleaner and some elbow grease. Cleaning staff basically just swept the room and no actual cleaning occurred. The air con didn't work and further dripped regularly onto the bed below it - we complained but nothing was fixed or improved. Soft furnishing and towels were aged and fraying. We worried about the security of our room when a small amount of money and some of my teenage daughter's clothes disappeared from the room. We did inform the reception, but they were blase. All the entertainment was in German. Balcony was too small to hold the patio furniture they had tried to fit onto it, so you couldn't actually sit there, and overlooked a patch of waste ground. Would NEVER go back, and were really glad we had opted out of the all inclusive. The bars were lacking in atmosphere and charm - we went elsewhere every evening

We booked the Cactus Beach through Thomas Cook thinking that we would be guaranteed a decent hotel. Unfortunately, the hotel is probably a two-star (but advertised in the Thomas Cook brochure as a three-star). Upon arrival we were very depressed to be given a small, dark room in the centre of the complex. Within a few hours the evening entertainment had begun meaning our young daughter had no chance of sleeping because of the noise. We complained and were moved far away to a quiet annex of the hotel but this time the smell of cigarettes started coming through the air conditioning. A final move gave us a decent room (room 815).

The guests are mainly from Germany and Russia and the main language for the entertainment is German. the same goes for the kids club which, due to the language barrier, had little to offer my five-year old. Also, there is no gym (even though Thomas Cook advertised one) - you have to go to the hotel next door (the Cactus Royal) and pay 10 Euros for a day pass.

Food from the buffet restaurant wasn't bad but became very repetitve. All inclusive covered soft drinks, local beer and raki. The two a la carte restaurants (Italian and Grek) were absolutely awful.

The hotel is very close to the beach (very clean but became quite crowded) and the sea was lovely. The hotel's swimming pools were also clean but very, very small and crowded.

Outside the hotel, Stalis (Stalidha) is a fairly quiet resort good for families. There are enough of restaurants and bars to keep you happy. The Anatolia restarant was expensive but the quality of food and service was superb (ask for Andreas - the maitre'd and son of the owner). Also recommended is the Africa Bar which serves very generous cocktails and has a great barman (Dejan) from Serbia.

Overall, I had a nice holiday and would return to Stalis but not to the Cactus Beach.

We have just returned from a week in Cactus Beach, The Hotel was fine but I would not go back, this has apparently been a German based hotel for the last 20 years. The hotel itself is quite specious and the grounds are well maintained, we stayed in a room with a spiral stair case, which meant the kids had their own room, slightly unsafe looking but fine. The food in the hotel was 100%, very nice and different choices at lunches and dinners. The buffet styled eating worked fine, times were quite spaced out so the restuarant was not to busy. We went AI but the only thing that was included was Wine, Beer, Ouzo, Raki and Brandy - not vodka etc, which was very disappointing, the wine and beer was so very low in alcohol we gave up getting drinks their after 2 days! The pool snacks consisted of chips and a really vile pastry - every day! You get 2 visits to a Greek Taverna and the Italian the Greek one did not have any dishes for children, and a choice of 4 dishes.
The Entertainment for the children was no good, it was in German, the evening entertainment was also in German, we very much got the impression that if you weren't German then they didn't care. Was disappointed for the kids, they didn't make any friends as no one understood them. My room was cleaned every day by a very nice lady and fresh towels every day. Location of the hotel was very good, straight off the Beach which was good as we couldn't get anywhere near the pool so had to spend 6 euros a day to get a lounger at Beach, every day the same people were at the pool in the same seat! I would not recommend this hotel to anyone travelling from Britain! Malia is worth a visit, it is a bit like Blackpool in the sun!

Stalis is very bussy place in Crete and Cactus is a very noisy Hotel.
If you prefer quietlocation and quiet Hotel never chose Cactus beach !
Hotel is not bad, some rooms are nicer than other, depends on you luck, mine was very simple room and very noisy one.
The place start to shake after the dinner. To much cheep unproffesional animation geared for cheep travelers.
Place is full of small or young kids, therefore very noisy during the day,
and later the animation and the discos across the street.
Food was very good , very tasty but....... the screaming kids in the restaurant
that was terrible.
Al inclusive was not so inclusive, it was very basic inclusive !
Rooms were cleaned daily.
Restaurant was nice and clean. with great food, self served all you can eat,
but...........HURRY UP so ,that you get decent place to sit.
Service at the desk was ify........
Internet not working.
Animation terrible !
Beach was nice and so was the Beach restaurant (with not many choices).
But pleasant for view.
Landscaping was excellent !
Fridge (cheep and old) was not working. Same the hairdryer in the bathroom. Bathroom was very basic.
If you rent a car you yu will have lots of fun.
You can also take public bus service, which was quite experience.
You could visit Herssonisos with many places to shop and explore.
Even Malia is good to visit.
I prefer Chania and vicinity.
People in this part of Crete are not very hospitable.
If you like to shop for leather you need to go out of Stalis.
In Herssonisos yo get better variety and deals.

I went to this hotel around the 6 october 2009 with my mum and dad plus my partner and my two young kids.
It is in a great location just across the road from the beach and in the the middle of the resort of stalis. There is a great bar just across the road wich plays live music most nights and you can sit in the hotel and watch it from there.
We only found one mamber of staff to talk to us which is the put off but if you go to this hotel his name is Alex and he is really nice. Hotel reception were nice and the rest of the bar staff were very RUDE. You would walk up to get a drink and they would walk around cleaning tables or serve the german instead of you. We did not see any shows or any thing that was in english apart from some of the music was, but this was not to bad because we would go out and walk around at night then come back and watch the live music across the road.
I think if more english went then it would become a better hotel for the english.
I would go back to this hotel and the resort is good for all ages.

I have been at cactus for one week during september. Nice and very big hotel, very close to the beach, restaurants, shops,... The personal at the reception was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean, equipped with air condition, nice with a large bathroom. The rooms have one big mistake. The walls are bad isolated, I thought during the night, that the neighbours are actually in our room. You could almoust hear everything what they have speaked in the next room. Since there is a lot of families it could be very loud when some child is crying during the night. You can hear really everything through this walls.
We were suprised at the arrival that they give you possibility to eat once a week in their Italian and Greek restaurant. We went only in their greek restaurant. Fodd there was delicious, you can choose between couple of menu's. Also the location of the restaurant direct by the beach offer one great feeling to eat there. It was good experience.
The food at hotel restaurant ws also delicious, a lot of different food for dinner and take as many as you wish. The breakfirst is always the same, but it offers fresh and nice food. At the dinner every drink needed to paid every drink.
They have also a big parking for rent-a-cars if you plan to travel through crete with car.
Generally a good hotel, but a lot of German turists, we saw couple of personal in restaurant speak only german. I expected a little more Greek atmosphere. A little to noisy for me, I could hear each child cry through the walls, each open of neighbours doors, each word spoken in front of the room doors on the hall...
I would recommend the hotel to families with children, for people who like to have a little peace during the nigth this hotel is not the first choice.
We traveled each day through the crete with a rent-a-car so we needed a lot of sleep, which we didn't get every night. Because of this the Cactus beach would not be the first choice for us on the next trip.
