Villa Marise and Europa Studios
Reviewed June 5, 2013

My wife and I travel a lot escpecially in Greece and have always had wonderful stays and this is the 1st time we have ever felt the need to write into TripAdvisor. We stayed at Villa Marise as part our trip around Crete. This was the most expensive place we stayed in and it proved to be the worst value for money.not coming up to par with much cheaper and better accomodation. Its such a shame as the setting is great and Paleachora is just wonderful. We will visit Paleachora again but look elsewhere to stay.
Bad points
1. we paid extra for a sea view which is streching a point .. yes you can just about the sea through trees and over the low level roofs .. but its hardly a sea view. 2. Breakfast was compulsary despite being in a self catering apartment with not much choice .. eggs were extra as was non instant coffee. 3. we were informed beach beds were at our disposal but it turned out we were expected to pay an extra 5 Euro's. Also the beach beds around the small pool were in sad need of repair 4.The garden had dog poo so you had to be carefull where walking 6. One day we had no hot water. 7. They did not acept debit or euro cash cards only cash which is not aceptable in 2013, no other accomodation asked for cash. 8. And the final insult .. whilst the staff were lovely the owner did not acknowledge me as I handed the key in when we left.

We choose to go back to wonderful Crete on a last minute decision right in the middle of august and we selected Villa Marisa/ Villa Europa in Paleochora.
The town is a vacationer's dream and we believe it should be quite difficult to find a better spot in the world, for the money, of course.
Besides, it is the only place in Greece where we found eating to be surprising agreeable and very reasonably priced.
For an Italian in Greece this is high prise, believe it!
Now the accommodation: we choose Villa Marisa because of the high prises in Trip Advisor and because of the pleasant talks we had with Anna, Villa Marisa's owner and manager.
We were nevertheless a bit worried because, while the comment majority was enthusiastic about the site some were, nevertheless, less than flattering.
When we got there, we understood why. As it often happens, they all had their good reasons.
The fact is that Villa Marisa and Villa Europa are two different set-ups.
Three actually, Villa Marisa is the oldest and Europa the newest, between the two stays a Villa Canea which we did not practice.
Because of our dates and late reservation, we had to stay three days at one room in Villa Europa, upon our arrival, then we moved for eight days to Villa Marisa, then back again for four days to another, better and more expensive room at Villa Europa.
That's it. You have what you pay for.
Forget the swimming pool, as the French say you are "the feet in the water", the site is beautiful and unique in Paleochora.
Villa Marisa, being older, is a tiny bit seedy and you can get a reasonable room for 50 €/night breakfast included (don't forget that you are 30 seconds away from your myrtle threes' lined sandy beach). At Villa Europa you get excellent rooms for 60€ and rooms with gorgeous sunset view for 70€ and, oh boy, are they worth their price!
Now what do you want to know? We'll go back to Paleochora for sure and we'll stay, Anna permitting, at Villa Europa.

Room Tip: Rooms looking west at Europa's are the best and most expensive. Rooms facing north at Marisa'...

We weren't sure what to expect from the reviews on here of Villa Marise & Europa, Particularly since there aren't that many recent reviews ... and I can only conclude that the reason that there aren't more reviews is that other guests are trying to keep the magic of Villa Marise & Europa a secret !

We stayed in Villa Europa in Room 32 which overlooks the beach - from the huge terrace you can watch sunrise and sunset every day - and every day it's more breathtaking ... The room is large, clean and comfortable with good working aircon [though if i had worked out earlier that there were mosquito nets on the windows we might not have used it !]. The bathroom is basic and the rooms are cleaned daily.

Anna and all the staff were so very welcoming and helpful and even though the hotel was full to capacity there was never any sense of being either overcrowded or that the service was in any way stretched..

The magic of this hotel happens outside the rooms though ... a leisurely walk along the beach [past the pool] leads to the beach bar for delicious breakfast, or a greek salad and ice cold beer for lunch, or a game of backgammon with a sunset cocktail. The beach itself is caribbean-like white [hot] sand with beds and parasols available but our preference was to lie under the trees at the edge of the beach [equidistant between the waterfront, the pool and the beach bar!].

Paleochora itself is a 5 - 10 minute walk away ... lovely cafes and restaurants and shops ... after 5pm the town is free of cars, there are tables and chairs in the street and a really special convivial welcoming atmosphere ... our favourite restaurants were Kapetan Dimitris , Maria's and Pantelis Taverna. Delicious fresh fish and salads with ice cold retsina and a Raki on the house to finish ... and then a leisurely walk back home ...

We did have a couple of days where there was a very strong wind but other than that the climate at the end of August was perfect.

We have happily and with hand on heart reviewed Villa Marise & Europa as Excellent because the reality exceeded our expectations and for €70 per night including breakfast Villa Marise & Europa are really good value for money. But if you want bells & whistles and power showers this is probably not the place for you ... and similarly if you want a sophisticated and glamorous holiday destination Paleochora probably wouldn't be right for you either. If however, you want a really properly relaxing holiday with lovely food and a unique, welcoming atmosphere we'd recommend you book your stay now !

Perfect for those who want their own room! The studios at Villa Marise are good value at only 40 euros a night including breakfast. Unlike previous review the breakfast is great, bread so fresh it is still warm, orange juice freshly squeezed, yogurt and honey as you please. For a small supplement you can have cooked items which are always well prepared and graciously served by Sabina. Not forgetting the beach view! Single room size varies a lot, from spacious for a single to a tight fit. The air con is included although frequent power outs meant it turned off sometimes. The cleaning lady is very thorough, she likes to get in early which is hard on the late sleepers! Location is perfect, a short stroll to the nudist beach or into town. The only reason I would not return is that I would prefer to have a sea view and windows that open on to the sea to get fresh air in the room. My room was secluded behind trees which kept the sun off, but no breezes either.

Room Tip: Room 5 is the best studio, shady balcony and windows that allow breezes in.

It's funny, like the review below, we stayed at a few places on a tour around Crete, but unlike the other reviewer, this was actually my favourite. I'd say it was mid priced, at around €80 per night I seem to remember. I loved the location by the sandy beach, and our room was positioned with a side sea view, really nice for watching the sun go down. We were in Europa, and really enjoyed the peaceful pool, and the grounds are so pretty with flowers everywhere and olive trees. Their own website really does not do this place justice. We sat in front of the beach, but sheltered in the trees, it was so relaxing and quiet. A 10 minute walk into town, with a few supermarkets on the way and a very cheap and excellent bakery. We ate at Maria's on the other side of town - excellent traditional Greek food, and really reasonable prices.
The breakfast buffet is €5 at the beach bar just in the beach was pretty awful to be honest, yesterdays bread, terrible cordial 'OJ', not worth it at all (though lovely views) better to go to the bakery for fresh bread and have it on your terrace.
Rooms themselves were quite spacious, clean but basic as you'd imagine for the price. They only accept cash - but there are cash machines in town. There is free wif-fi in and around reception.
Overall I would definitely recommend this place. We came here really to go to the pretty Elafonissi beach which you can drive to although it is a bit of a treck at an hour and a half, (get a map in reception) but was pleasantly surprised by Palaiokhora itself, it's a pretty little greek village by the sea.

Room Tip: Sea view is best. We got a side sea view which was great, but even better, get a room on the very fr...

We stayed at the Ville Marise at the end of August 2011. We stayed at a lot of different hotels on this trip and Ville Marise was our least favorite. Our room was very plain and very noisy unless you had all the windows closed and the AC on. That said the room was clean and the breakfast was very good. The hotel is right on the sandy beach and an easy walk to town, you have use of a pool at the Europa studios. Ville Marise does not have internet access but you can sit in the lobby of Europa. The people who owned the hotels where very nice and helpful. If you do go to Paleochora skip the town beaches and head 4km east to the amazing stone beach at Gyaliskari.

We stayed in the Villa Europa buiilding which I think is the newest one. Everything was perfect: the room (very modern), the unlimited seaview, the location (just 5 minutes walk to Paleochora center) and the beach that really lies in front of Villa Europa. The breakfast is included for those rooms that have no kitchen, otherwise it's 8 Euros. It's served at the beach bar what is really special and nice. The beach bar is a nice place during the day and evening with reasonable prices and a relaxing atmosphere. There is absolutely nothing negative to say about Villa Europa and I definitely can recommend it. There is a good mix of couples, families and older people, depending on the needs, there are different housing options. We had room no. 32, no kitchen with a huge terrasse, wonderful seaview included. We would definitely go back.
