We had two different salads as starters. This was our mistake as both were very large, one between two would have been ample. We had chicken with potatoes and lamb with wild greens, both were extremely good and very filling. For the second night running we had street entertainment, singing and dancing. This taverna is justifably very busy, so it is necessary to get here early.

Aristea is a wonderful cook, as well as being Yanni and Georgia's mum. There are many delicious dishes on the menu but it is always worth while going into the kitchen to see what Aristea has cooked on that day. She makes a wonderful rabbit stiffado, the meat balls stuffed with cheese are delicious. Try the stuffed courgette flowers as well as other of the delicious starters. One of the best restaurants in Paleochora and different from many of the others who have been cooking the same food for the last 25 years.

Aristea's Kitchen is a little gem of a family-run taverna down a side street close to the port in Paleochora. On entering we were given a brief tour of the kitchen to see the traditional Cretan dishes on offer that evening. They all looked so delicious we grabbed a table immediately! Aristea is the lady who does all the cooking herself... her son is the charismatic major D. The restaurant is everything that a Greek taverna should be – there are tables in the quiet road and a very pretty vine-covered patio area to the side. The whole arrangement is very well laid out - tasteful and atmospheric.

And the food is just stunning – it tastes as good as it looks. Karen's slow-cooked lamb stew with fresh herbs, olives, onions and crumbly cheese was accompanied by the best okra she'd tasted. My beef stifado was really excellent and Katie's lemon chicken was sublime.

And the price was reasonable too. This was the best dining experience we had in Paleochora. Thoroughly recommended!
