Worth the walk, especially as the portions are so big! Friendly service, excellent value too. Would definitely go back.

“OK food, avoid the garden.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2013

As the current #1 TripAdvisor recommendation in town, this was a must, but unfortunately it did not live up to its billing.

First, the food. We had two starters: fennel pie and melizanasalata (which is one our test dishes: if it is good, the rest of the food is generally good as well. The pie was interesting and indeed appetising, being a fried filled flatbread (paratha-style) stuffed with a thin layer of feathery herb fennel, giving it a distinctive but not over-powering aniseed flavour. The aubergine dip was heavy on the yogourt and low on the other flavours: a bit smoky but only just, likewise perhaps a bit of walnut but if so, it was barely discernible.

Mains were rabbit with lemon potatoes, and moussaka (another test dish.) The kounelli was well-enough executed, but a little low on the lemon and it certainly lacked the tenderness which should allow the flesh to fall off the bone. The moussaka was a generous house brick in size, and ticked all the boxes: adequate aubergine to potato ratio, a well-made ragout with bay and cinnamon notes, all topped off with a generous eggy, well-browned topping. We washed it all down with a meso-kilo of good house aspro.

Hospitality was a good karafaki of raki and some nice ripe grapes.

So why was our visit not wholly satisfactory, let alone awesome, amazing etc., as the #1 rating says it could be?

Well, the food, as described, was very good although some of it was less than excellent (the melizanosalata and rabbit.) But the more substantial failings were in the service and the ambience.

With regards to the former, it is always much more pleasant when waiters respond to the customers’ attempts at speaking Greek by speaking Greek themselves. It is even nicer when they wish them ‘kali orexi’ rather than ‘bon appetit’ and ‘guten Appetit’. Obviously, if the customer speaks and understands no Greek, it is another matter, but persisting in speaking English when the customer wishes to speak Greek is not good hospitality. Another mistake was to congratulate the customer on their choice of meal in terms uncomfortably close to the American faux-enthusiasm of ‘great choice!’

The least favourable part of the experience, though, was the setting and ambience of the meal. Indoors in the taverna itself would be different, but this so-called garden (where most of the seating is to be found) is simply not nice.

A Greek garden taverna is a pretty and indeed lovely setting, perhaps with tamarisk trees and vines, lit by strings of low wattage bulbs and maybe a few oil lamps and candles on the tables. This garden is a large open square of astroturf packed full of tables and lit from above by a single beam of bright sterile white light. This is of the wattage usually associated with floodlighting ancient monuments like Parthenon, or maybe with the searchlights that the Who used to turn on the audience back in the 70s. The effect is to dazzle those facing it and to cast into deep shadow the table, menu and food of those with their backs to it.

So, overall, some good food is to be had here. But sorry, there are certainly a number of more enjoyable tavernas to be found in Paleochora.

“Magnificent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2013

Paleochora offers a wide range of options, from the simple, terrific grill house Everest to more sophisticated places like Maria's and Methexis. We tried Maria's but couldn't see what the fuss was about - I'd place it as average to good. Then there's Methexis. Two evening meals in the astroturfed garden, both magnificent. From the initial welcome to the kitchen visit, right through to the end of the meals, it exceeded all expectations. The staff work very hard, the food is high quality, there is little more that can add that hasn't already been said. Will be back next summer to enjoy more of the same.

“Still awesome - one of the very best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

Cannot fault it and have become a regular on our annual visit. This years' pre 'going home day' evening dinner for 8 of us was tremendous value at under 100 euros which included a fair amount of the faling down stuff. Very popular with locals and us tourists alike and I look forward to 2014 to visit again. I have ordered the T-shirt.......
