“the good bad and indifferent”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

First the good - No noise problems from the planes being so close to the airport I was unsure if this would be an issue but no, lovely views of the sea, lovely sandy beach, rooms not 5 star but clean and comfortable, no problem getting a sunbed, no problem getting a table for mealtimes indoor or out, the daytime and evening entertainment was good, large pool but this is balanced out by the bad that it is salt water, now for the bad bits - the food was awful breakfast, lunch and dinner, very unapitising, often repetitive and not international more 2 to 3 star, huge queues for dinner due to very poorly laid out self service buffet area with carvery in the middle, if you like a drink avoid this hotel, the bar is separate from the entertainment so you have to miss the entertainment to go and get a drink i was with my partner, both of our mums who are oaps one in her 70's the other in her 80's, my daughter her husband and two grandchildren, you are only allowed two drinks at a time which to be fair is standard at most all inclusive hotels but they do tend to show some discretion - not here, they only had one bar person on at a time, the hotel advertises 3 bars which they have but only open any one at a time, we travelled in July when the hotel was at or near full occupancy so you can imagine the queues, I spent more time waiting for a drink than drinking - and so to the indifferent - management, when I managed to corner the bar manager and told him that the queues for a drink were unacceptable he shrugged his shoulders and had a couldnt care less attitude which was also shared by the male staff on reception where beach towels were supplied, I was given towels with large holes in little more than rags and when I took them back was told they are only for the beach, I was speechless the first time but insisted they were changed for towels without holes, the next time this happened I told the gentleman that at home we would throw these towels in the dustbin, I appreciate the country is suffering from austerity measures but they are not charging austerity prices - very poor value for money and I will not be using an Aquis luxury hotel again, the reason for booking this hotel was the good reviews on trip advisor, some posted at the time I was there ?

Room Tip: Try to get one of the beach bungalows

Terrible experience. Five star*****? I would give it 2**.
I stayed in July 2011. Tried to submit my review in several occasions but never went through.
They gave us the wrong room type, waited 20 minutes to be move moved to another room outside the main building. No one apology just “Let’s see If there is anything I can do”? We arrived on a late flight, which means that we couldn't eat one sandwich as the bar stops serving them at 11pm.
Block of rooms outside the hotel communal area is disgusting, unsafe lift, which didn't have a button to press, juts a hold where to stick your finger (we were so scared to get it that decided to use the stairs every day). Please see pictures.
They advertise to have 3 bars, they only have two. Please see the 3rd on the picture attached. It was closed and quite unsafe for children as it had cables hanging everywhere.
Also be aware of local dogs as they access to the premises and not only for a walk also for leaving their necessities. I was sunbathing on one of the sun beds, decided to go to the bar for a drink and had to jump over one. See pictures. (By the way it stayed there for few hours)
Towels have no words, please pictures too.
There is not communication between the staff. We arrange a late check out the night before with the night receptionist as our flight was late in the evening the day after. Well the following day after been by the pool, I came back to the room to find myself locked out.Had to call reception from another room opened by the housekeeper. Nobody knew anything and was told I should leave my room within 15 minutes! It was all sort it in the end but at the very end.
We complained of this while being at the hotel but I have to say that nothing was done.
Also wrote a complaint letter and came back to me as they didn't think that anything was wrong.
“Overall experience: very distressful.”

The hotel is very comfortable with good food, a fantastic pool, and wonderful beach! The staff are very pleaseant and helpful, especially Valentis at the reception.
Also Katerina and Nikko at the bar, always smiling ...they are really lovely.

What about the animation :waterpolo and beach volley with Harry and Salvo were great!

But the evening animation is very poor: so Harry is a really good entertainer but the shows are not worthy of professionnals. three fat girls trying to dance...and the "choreographer" (lol!) Keshia is the largest of the 3! Of course we didn't expect a Broadway show, but professionnals should pay attention to their appearance. the 2 boys did their best, but with such partners it's impossible to make a stylish show whatever you work! When the hotel is full and just about 40 people come to see the show... I think the animation team has to think about...

The worst thing was that the "animators" don't greet all customers, especially those who don't speak english...and just came to say "there is the show tonight, please come to the show". Monica was the most friendly, always smiling. Keshia never said hello to non-english speaking customers...

Otherwise, there was alson an evening with just live music outside (and there it was full!); Cretan dances were great too.

so we had a nice stay at the hotel, but the behavior should be fine with ALL clients. There is no place in an animation team for someone who thinks she's a star.

We stayed here in the first week of October (we also booked through Travelzoo) and to be honest it was better than we expected! We paid £400 each for flights and an all inclusive stay and were impressed by the value for money. On the other hand, i did get a bit bored by the food and we went out most nights to try some different places and meet some local Cretans!
When we first arrived we walked into a twin room but we rang down and they changed us to a double room straightaway, the rooms as a whole were fine, better than basic and the bathrooms were as expected. The food and drink quality were actually quite high but it was just the repetition that i didn't enjoy and as they used the same sauces a lot of it tasted the same. We have stayed at an AI before (although it's not really our type of holiday) and i would say that the Aquis Arina was let down by the dinner experience. It felt like you got dressed in the evening to go to a cafeteria, there was no music and just felt a bit depressing (at least they did put down tablecloths). We ended up hiring a car and doing half a day by the pool and eating lunch at the hotel then travelling around and eating dinner out and that worked great for us - see our reviews about nearby restaurants!). Overall, we wouldn't go again but i don't regret going and i think if you're used to an AI holdiay and you're just looking to relax then this would be great, but is also a good base for exploring Crete as it's only 10 mins from the airport!

Room Tip: sea facing - otherwise it might be a bit depressing!

We booked this in January this year on a travel zoo deal. We stayed at this hotel for a week starting the 2nd October. We booked this holiday out of season as we wanted to go when it wasnt too hot, but still nice. We wanted a peaceful, restful holiday and that is exactly what we got. We arrived just after 11pm, we were given a bottle of water but nothing to eat which was a shame as by trip advisor I had hoped to get a sandwich, but that wasnt advertised so couldnt grumble really. We had just missed the All Inclusive time for the bar so had to buy our drink that night. There was a couple who got on our bus 20 minutes after everyone else, so we should send them the bill!
The weather was lovely, we had rain one morning and on afternoon, other time there was beautiful sunshine. As we were right at the end of the season, we had less and less people at the hotel as the days went by as people left and wernt replaced. The staff were brilliant. The managers could smile now and again but generally looked quite miserable but the other staff were really friendly and very good, working really hard tirelessly. Eleni in the pool bar was totally charming and Niko in the main bar was excellent.
We went snorkelling in the rock pool on the right hand side of the beach, it was fantastic, clear water and lots of different fish to see. We didnt bring flippers but wished we had.
We had a lovely time sitting by the pool reading books soaking up the sun, having a dip now and again and popping to the bar for drinks and food every now and again. I really couldnt of asked for more and going right at the end of the season meant there was no hassle getting sunbeds or anything, totally fabulous.
Asking the locals to teach you a little greek and practicing hello and thank you go a long way to enjoying your holiday.
The food was ok. There was always something we could find to eat, there certainly was lots of selection. Some were not too good but other foods were really lovely. I put on over 5lbs in a week so it couldnt be too bad!!!
The rooms were fine, they were very clean. The shower was very powerful and the screen didnt hold the water back so the floor was always wet, but there is a towelling floor thing, so I simply walked that around the room after we had finished showering and there was no problem, it soon dried up after that.
We went out the hotel and got on the bus to the next town, quite a lot going on there, I got a bus back, it cost 1.70 Euros each way, another couple got a taxi back and were charged 30 euros, my other half bartered and got a taxi back for 8 euros!
The safe cost us about 17 Euros for the week and we booked a late checkout for 40 euros, well worth it as we then had the room til we left for the airport.
One downside is that the corridors can be noisy, so if you go please be aware of this and be considerate to others during the night and morning.
A thoroughly wonderful holiday, wish I was there now.

This is the thrid time we have holidayed with Aquis twice in corfu and our first stay at Arina sands. We spent the last week of the season with them and to be quite honest we had a great time.
What some people need to realise is the hotel is a greek 5 star, which in the uk is probably 3-4
star.!! We stayed on the third floor, accessed by lift or stairs no problem. The room was nice and clean and comfortable and the the beds were made up daily. the bathroom was also clean
with plenty of hot water, my only gripe was the shower head pointed the wrong way but no real issues.

The staff on the whole were helpful and pleasent . Eleni was very helpful at the bar and helped with our daughters many requests. the guy behind the desk was a bit abrubt but he was not rude and was helpful when asked questions.

The hotel was very nice and relaxing inside and out, The inside bar was very nice after dinner and the barman a happy chap and very good with our daughter.
The food was ok and they tried to cater for every one there was something to eat each night
and we didnt go hungry, there was a range of salads, continetal meats and mainly european dishes. It would of been nice to have more Greek dishes on the menu though.

I would like to say a big thankyou to the animation team of Harry.,Kate,Serena and Monica who put on some great entertainment for the kids and adults alike, whom made our stay even more enjoyable,

To sum up we had a great time, weather in the high 20's met some luvly people and would come again at the same time of the season we both feel that at the hight of season that the facilities would be a bit stretched to acomdate everyone.
I have read some poor reviews for this resort and i think quite a few are unfounded and quite un-true

LIke other comments we booked this pretty much last minute after checking comments on Tripadviser. We always check and have never been disappointed.............until now!. All the negative points raised are so true. Flooded bathrooms - complained first morning - nothing was done. Pool bar toilets - disgusting. Also main hotel toilets lack servicing for the basic amenities.
Food is really really terrible. I never knew that spam/luncheon meat was so versatile - it was even served as bacon some mornings. As with others who have commented, we were forced to start eating out.
We did make a formal complaint to the Holiday Advisor who undertook to take our complaint up with management but hey ho he did nothing and disappeared on our last day, so this matter is still ongoing with First Choice.
We've never complained before and have never posted comments on this site, but feel really strongly that people should be aware how bad it is before they part with their hard earned cash..
