Ivy House - Utah Beach Normandy
Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

Spent a lovely week staying in barton cottage. So much to see and do but also so relaxing. would definately recommend a visit . On the down side this gite is supposed to sleep six, however the downstairs third bedroom is only a single bedroom and also has no window. There is only one wardrobe upstairs for the whole of the gite. This could be tricky if there are six of you.!!. Oh and yeah the flies but soon sorted them with some industrial fly spray.!!

I just wanted to say what a fantastic trip we've had staying at ivy house in normandy.
It's been the most relaxing holiday I can think of in such a long time, and will, most certainly be back!
Accommodation was just fine, lovely and close to Utah beach, peaceful and quiet, beautiful and scenic, with the obvious military interest.
The local village pleasant, local villagers also helpful and informative.
Really cannot recommend this location enough - downsides....the kitchen utensils could of been cleaner, the shower a bit bigger (not suited for very tall people) and the flies......

Despite Ivy house being fully booked Andy went out of his way to accommodate us and we found ourselves staying in a sister property, a lovely 3 bed town house just off the main square in Sainte Mere Eglise. This was a great base for a hectic few days seeing all the Normandy sites. Perfectly situated a minutes walk from the square so once the day's visits were done we could all enjoy an apero / meal. The house has good kitchen facilities as well as a small and sunny courtyard with BBQ. There are two doubles, a twin, a family bathroom plus a second WC. The DVD player meant we could slump in front of movies at the end of tiring days out and about. A well situated tidy town house. We'd return.

We stayed in the Roosevelt Cottage at Ivy House. From reading previous reviews on tripadvisor we looked forward to staying in a clean, comfortable, well maintained cottage. However the property in question did not live up to our expectations or meet the standards we would have expected from reading the previous reviews.

The outside of the property did not match the photos shown on tripadvisor. The wooden furniture outside the property (not shown in the photos) has not been maintained correctly leaving it dry, flakey and unusable. The wooden decking was also in the same condition, with some of the wooden uprights for the hand rails laying broken on the decking. The photos on tripadvisor show the outside of the property decorated with pot plants, these were present but the plants had been dead for some time!

On entering the property the tiled floors were sticky and shoes had to be worn at all times. The work surfaces in the kitchen were grimey and needed to be cleaned before we could use them. We also had to wash the crockery before use as food residue remained on them.

We spent the week living out of our suitcases as we could not use the chest of drawers due to the knobs falling off everytime you tried to open them. The wardrobe was dangerous as it toppled forward when opened.

The bathroom was no better. The sink plug mechanism did not work, meaning the sink took forever to drain. The shower had mould growing on the ceiling and around the doors. When in use the shower tray did not drain correctly. The towel rail was hanging off the wall. There were brackets on the wall for a shelf beneath the mirror, however no shelf!

There has obviously been no general maintenance carried out on this particular property for some considerable time, for example there were numerous large cobwebs, flaking paint and holes in the interior walls where previous fixtures and fittings have been removed and not replaced.

Unfortunately the standard of the accommodation spoilt a long awaited holiday in a very pretty and historic area of France.

This was a great place to stay for my father and I because we were in Normandy to tour the WWII beaches and battle sites. Ivy House existed at the time of the invasion and was used to house German soldiers. Today the accommodations are nice and the owners are super. Price was very reasonable.

Be mindful tough that there's not alot around Ivy House. Very few options as far as restaurants. If your looking for something near lots of restaurants and stuff like that you should stay in Bayeaux.

We really enjoyed our stay at Ivy House. Andy and Emma made sure we had everything we needed and gave us advice about the area. The cottage was clean and roomy, and it was really nice to have a kitchen on our vacation.
The cottage was a five minute walk to Utah beach, by which I was pleasantly surprised. The area around Ivy House is quiet and mostly farm pasture. It was nice to hear horses neighing and just be in such a picturesque setting.
We stayed in the Hemingway cottage, which was perfect for two people. It is a two-story cottage with a roomy kitchen/living area downstairs and bedroom/bathroom upstairs. We absolutely plan on returning to Normandy again and we definitely want to stay at Ivy House next time.

Stayed at Barton cottage with our two children in June and had an absolutlely wonderful time.
The cottage is perfect, large kitchen, great living area and comfy bedrooms upstairs.
The kitchen was well stocked, even with fresh eggs, milk and juice. The location is great, Utah beach is a 10 minute walk away and the most distant landing sites at Sword and Juno are an easy drive. It cannot be overstated how many villages, sites and museums are within an easy drive from the Ivy House. We spent 4 nights, and felt that we easily could have spent another week. The kids loved it, they had freedom to run around, lots of play areas and even toys for young kids, and the adults loved sitting outside in the evening enjoying a few bottles of wine. We cooked most of our own meals, grocery stores are close, and we estimate we saved a couple hundred Euros by making breakfast and dinner at the cottage. Don't miss the bakery truck that delivers fresh treats, you'll instantly feel like a local when your carrying your baguette and croissants back to the cottage to enjoy a coffee from your private patio!
Andy is super knowledgable and gives great tours, and Emma was fantastic, even arranging playdates for our 3 year old with her own children.
Definitly recommend the Ivy House
