“Good Holiday”
Reviewed September 6, 2013

We have just returned from a 2 week break at the Helios Bay. The weather was superb, 30 degrees every day with the exception of the last 2 days. The hotel is very nice, it is clean, comfortable and spacious. The only negative about the hotel were the staff we thought. We did have a lovely time over the 2 weeks and everything was good, but nothing stood out as great. We certainly are not complaining about the hotel, but felt very much that they have a facility and an opportunity to make the difference between good and great and they don't seem to take it. The bedroom sizes are superb and nearly all of them have a fantastic view over the sea and pool, just be careful not to get a room overlooking the football pitch the other side as that is not a very nice view. It was our first time to Bulgaria and have heard from any people that it is the next up and coming place for tourism. I think it absolutely could be but the people who live there need to sort their attitudes out a bit. Majority of staff in the hotel as well as people in Obzor centre always looked totally miserable and almost as if they had had enough. It might be the difference in cultures but I didn't feel that the service element was there at all, both in the hotel and outside. They all do what they need to do and that is it. There was however an exception to this and that was the pool bar team, they were always cheerful, professional and had a smile for everyone. My daughter attended the kids club and had a great time, but the evening entertainment is shockingly bad. Bulgaria, the hotel and the entertainment is very orientated towards German. There was loads of choice for food and it is very good, but again, 2 weeks of all inclusive, starts to get a bit boring. We then decided to go out to Salt and Pepper for one evening on recommendation from Barney the Rep and also trip advisor, I really wouldn't bother. the food is actually a lot better in the hotel and the service again was shocking. if you order a starter, main and dessert, you are likely to get it all served at the same time. If the food is ready in the kitchen, it gets plonked down on your table, even if you are not finished. Stay in the hotel to eat, would be my recommendation. Obzor is very quiet which was fine for us, as we wanted a lazy by the pool and the beach holiday, but if the weather is not on your side, then there is not a lot to do. All the shops seem to sell the same thing and that is fake branded clothes. I did buy a sports top, washed it when I got home and the adidas branding has partly come off in the wash (could be my washing!) There are a number of reviews already speaking very highly about Barney the rep, I didn't rate him at all. I thought he was miserable and normally no where to be seen or found. Again, probably just our individual experience. The day time entertainment was ok but the main person to stand out was Felix. He was brilliant and is responsible for sports. He was into everything and a really good, fun, energetic guy. The pool and the beach are superb, best I have experienced on holiday. Would recommend just for that. Would we go back - probably not, it was a good holiday but it had the potential to be great and the people let that down a bit.

Room Tip: Just be careful of the lifts, there are not enough lifts at peak times so we ended up using the stai...

Exccelent experience, I can compare it to the holidays i had in Turkey, in all inclusive hotes.
I will deffinately go again!!! I made the reservation for a superior double room, but when we got there, the room was not ready, and they gave us an appartment, with no extra money.

Room Tip: If you are not sattisfied with your room, the staff at the reception are more then happy to help you...

Got here a week ago in the early hours of the morning where we were made very welcome and hosted well. First time Thomson all inclusive and after this experience I probably won't go back. The hotel was kept in good clean order and the rooms were cleaned daily to a high standard. Food for all 3 meal timings and the snacks were plentiful and tasted great. Staff were always pleasant and well presented to a high standard, very friendly even at the busier times of the day. Pool was cleaned twice a day and kept too a high standard, no problems with getting a place in the morning by the pool as long as you weren't to late getting there. The beach was so close that you're could go from the pool to the sea in 30 seconds and not be phased. The comments on the children running around at meal timings are not true as even the young generation like to get there own food. One suggestion to try and get a pool view as the opposite direction will be looking at the sea but also the fair and road. We have enjoyed and still in the lobby of the hotel waiting to go tonight. Hope you enjoy

Visited this hotel with a friend in early August and had the most fantastic holiday. The hotel is very welcoming, with complimentary cocktails on arrival.... even at 3.30am!!! The rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean. The food has good variety and there is always something to choose to suit most people's palettes. There are always plenty of places to sit, but we found if you get down to the pool after 9am you struggled to get a sunbed. They give you pool towels... try and get a green one, as they are larger and fit the sunbed. The annimation team are fantastic and there was plenty to do. I tried the aqua aerobics at 11.30am and enjoyed it. We attended the evening shows which are an interesting experience, but enjoyable nevertheless! We also used the spa facility, I had a back massage and indian head massage which lasted an hour andcost about £25. It was lovely and relaxing. Barney is a good rep and you must go on his free resort ramble as he shows you around the area. There is a fun fair next to the hotel, with rides costing 3lev ( around £1.50) and a mini golf course. The beach is stunning and sunbeds and parasols are free to hotel guests. Obzor is a lovely resort, with plenty of little stores and a pretty square. It is not as commercialized as other resorts I have been to, but I prefer this. All in all I would recommend this hotel to both families, groups of friends and couples.

Stayed at this hotel from 22/07/13 for 2 weeks, Excellent hotel with lovely choice + plenty of food, different menu each evening, my kids (age 10 + 12) ate loads + never had a problem of what to eat. Plenty of choice + availability of drinks.
The whole hotel was very clean + maid service on a daily basis, staff were friendly + spoke good English, managers were around everyday + greeted you most evenings for your evening meal.
Plenty of sun beds around pool with even more on the beach within 30 metres. Entertainment was ok for adults + younger children, 8 to 16 day time entertainment is lacking as they were not allowed to participate in activities organised for adults such as darts + boules.
Barney the Thomson Rep was pleasant + helpful when needed.
We all had a lovely holiday + would certainly return.

Room Tip: A room 4th floor or higher for the best view of pool + black sea.

This was our second holiday in the Hotel Riu Helios Bay this year and this is our views.
Went as couple age 45 to 50
24th > 31st May 2013 & August 4th > 9th August 2013

We cannot speak to highly enough of this hotel its Staff and the people of Bulgaria as they try so hard to make sure you have a relaxing stay.
The rooms were first class we had room 6118 the first time and room 3126 the second visit and out of the two we preferred room 6118 because you have a better view of the beach but most importantly you can watch the animation team dancing to Trollywood in the morning (you have got to be there to understand) as this made us smile.
The restaurant had two sittings first 6.30pm till 8pm and the second sitting 8.30pm till 10pm and we preferred the later sitting as by the time we had finished our dinner (9.30pm) the evening show started and all the kids show had finished. Food was great and we never got bored as there were loads to choose from and it changed daily. The wine and beer tasted better this time round than it did in May but I’m not 100% sure as we were so happy to be back. The animation Team worked so hard looking after us in the day time and entertained us at night. The August holiday the Animation team were loads better and we loved the DJ music sketch but our favourite was the cowboy sketch. There were also more professional shows in August than May, Loved the Bulgarian folk dancing but not the magic shows the best show was the female contortionist, well I think the gentlemen will liked it, LOL. Bar staff were friendly and always served you with a smile, Nazdrave!

May Holiday

The 5 days of sun ( avg temp 20 Celsius) and one day of thunder storms and the other was heavy rain. Most of the shops were closed as the resort did not open until the 1st June but this did not bother us. The pool & sea was freezing but refreshing once in. Loads of sunbeds both around the pool and beach. Night time was cold so don’t forget to take your cardigan’s ladies. May is a good time to go if you are looking for a quite relaxing holiday making new friends and getting some much needed sun after the long winter.

August Holiday
7 days of sun ( avg temp 30 Celsius) all of the resort is open and very busy. Pool & sea was very warm and you can stay in as long as you want and we did. Loads of families and it was good to see all the nationalities mixing especially the children and I believe this was down to the Animation Team and I commend the two Guys and the tall lady (the kids loved her) I’m sorry but I forgot their names but they do need a mention as they mixed more with all the nationalities which brought us together. August is a faster pace of life, good for families and loads to do! Wife loved it but I found it hard to relax this time.

The Tomson advisor (Barney)
What can I say other than a very hard working likeable rep’ always had time for us all and if you get the chance a must is the Barney Ramble as he will give good advice on where to eat and drink and much more in Obzor, he does this on his half day free of charge, you can’t get better than that can you. It’s so good we went twice as it is a good couple of hours out of your daily routine but next year Barney new jokes needed, lol.

Must do’s
Khans Tent – I know it’s pricey but it is worth the money and Barney will get you best seats he can.

Nessebar – Cracking day out loads of history and well worth the money. If you don’t have the meal with the excursion still go with them as they take you to a fantastic restaurant and it is on the cliff edge and the view is amazing. I had tiger prawns and they were so delicious and I wanted more but the wife wanted do some shopping before we returned back to the bus. PLEASE TAKE NOTE! Keep away from the ladies selling necklaces on their arms walking around Nessebar they want to steal off you the necklaces are a distraction.

Safari – better done on cooler days as it gets warm whilst travelling in the 4x4’s. It’s a good day out and if you get a good crowd with you its better. When you have lunch, be careful not to mix the Rakia jug with the wine jugs as I did ask Barney about it. Rakia is crossed between whiskey and moonshine and it’s very strong.

Summary
If you want a holiday where you still can walk around the shops and restaurants without being hassled enjoying a beer for a quid eating meat off a skewer whilst watching the world go by in the square with very little worry of being bitten by mosquito’s then returning to a wonderful hotel with genuine lovely people then we highly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: All rooms have sea views but we prefered the rooms above the reception floor 4 and above as you can...
