Alpenhotel Fernau

My wife and I have stayed at the Fernau many times now. We like the Stubaital so much for its variety of walking and possibility of visiting other towns - not just Innsbruck if the weather is bad. The hotel is a home from home.

Like home, some rooms are better than others but in our experience always very clean. (There are different grades of room, tour operators don't make this clear.) The staff we've found always to be very attentive - but not obtrusively so as can happen in Austria. Martin, the chief, is caring and good at arranging help. The style of food has lightened from the old traditional Austrian in recent years offering a lighter style with excellent variety and choice. The best commendation for a hotel is people return time after time. We have met people who have become friends because we meet each year. Some have been annual guests for 25 years, we will merely have been 15 times by next year.

Room Tip: Most find rear of the hotel facing the garden quietest.

My father has been coming here for 20 years with his golfing buddies for their skiing trips and this is my first year coming with them and I can see why they keep coming back...

The hotel is well located for the short drive to the Stubai Glacier. It looks wonderfully traditional from the outside without being "touristy", and the same goes for the inside - a very relaxed and warm atmosphere.

The reception staff are friendly and helpful, with the same going for the rest of the hotel staff - especially the dining room staff. Martin, the owner, likes to mix with and befriend the guests.

The food is good, with a good variety and always enough on offer.

It's a great stay for the price charged - great value for money!

We've just returned from the Fernau (4th visit) and cannot praise this hotel and its staff enough. During our stay my husband fell ill and Martin, the owner, personally accompanied us and waited at the doctors surgery before returning us to the hotel.

Once recovered we had a fantastic time! The food was absolutely lovely with much variety. The staff are extremely attentive and I had such fun with Franz who tried his hardest to teach me the Austrian dance of thigh slapping one evening in the bar. Franz is lovely and is always on hand to replenish you and advised us on the many different schnapps. He put on some lovely Austrian music for us during the evenings in the bar.

The walks, scenery and nature are beautiful and we feel we that we have found our paradise in the Stubai Valley and at the Hotel Fernau. We've just booked for two weeks next year and that surely says it all!

Although we enjoyed our holiday in Neustift in July, we were extremely disappointed with our room at the Fernau in the first week. It was small, dark and characterless. The furniture was old and scratched and the lighting very poor. Our bathroom had dated brown floor and wall tiles, it's window overlooked next door's balcony and the bath was short and narrow (and we are both slim people!) Our room overlooked quite a busy road and the car park of the hotel annex on the other side of the road. This room was definitely not the 4 star quality one usually finds in Austria. After complaining, we were moved to a better room on the side of the hotel which was an improvement but still pretty average for a 4 star hotel. It seems the best rooms overlook the attractive garden at the back. Management definitely need to refurbish the bedrooms at the front of the hotel as soon as possible.

The staff in the dining room were very friendly and attentive. One of the girls on reception was very helpful and friendly, the other just passed on any queries to her colleague! The hotel owner only acknowledged us on our last day and really did not look as if he was enjoying his job. The barman was aloof and one cleaner refused to clean our room one Sunday because it was 3pm, obviously the time she was due to clock off.

On a positive note, the food was good and plentiful, the garden and terrace attractive and the tennis courts were in a good condition.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms overlooking the road as they are in dire need of refurbishment and only get evening sun.

We spent the second week of our 2-centre Austrian holiday here in Neustift. Expecting the usual excellent standard of 4* Austrian hotels, we were disappointed to find ourselves in a small, cramped, dingy room with a 'minimalist' (size, that is!) bathroom/shower. The overwhelming impression was of dark brown and muddy yellow - and that included the bathroom, where fluorescent strip lighting was used. (Other guests felt the same way and several intended to make a formal complaint to their travel company). We did have a decent-sized balcony and the food was very good - plentiful with good choice and of a good standard. The hotel's bar, lounge and dining room were OK, but tired-looking. May be other rooms, perhaps facing the garden at the back, would have been very different but all in all, choose another hotel for your stay in Neustift.

Room Tip: Try a room facing over the garden at the back

Not as great as some of the reviews here. Reasonable food, limited wine list. Typical Austrian hotel: far too many courses, anything left over one night will be used the next. Rooms on road side are noisy, bathrooms old fashioned (shower went hot and cold, very difficult to adjust, bath plug leaked so no long hot baths).

Good facilities - tennis courts absolutely wonderful - best views ever. Outdoor chess a nice touch. But lack of indoor swimming pool a definite negative - outdoors one cold and only usable on warm days.

Barman has a great gift for walking straight past you when you are desperate for a drink. (Though there is a plus side to this - our bar bill for two weeks was only 200 Euros compared to 400 in the Hotel Post in St Anton last year, where the barman was wonderfully professional and attentive).)

Very good walk organised by hotel each week with delightful guide.

Neustift itself is lively and the Stubai Valley itself is wonderful for walking - our third visit there and still discovering new treasures. If only you could take the Hotel Post and plonk it in Neustift... Far better food, fabulous wine list, more attentive staff, and modern rooms with enormous bathrooms
