When you find a gem of a hotel where the only focus is your complete comfort and satisfaction, you need to tell the world. The Historias Lodge is just such a place. It is not a 4-star hotel; it's a family business. Our room was spacious and clean, breakfast (included) was yummy with fresh fruit, pancakes, eggs and plenty of local coffee.
We were within walking distance to 5-6 restaurants, a small grocery, a local art gallery, and a butterfly exhibit. A cab to downtown was $2 each way. The medical clinic was just around the corner.
And then there was Alba. Alba is the proprietress of the lodge, which she runs with her brother and sister. As we were planning our trip, she answered emails within 24 hours, essentially said 'Yes" to all our requests, and set up transportation to and from San Jose. During our stay, she sourced the coffee we wanted, set up our tours, scored us a terrific guide, and took care of our needs for comfort (e.g., reading lights, comfortable chairs, etc.). What won't that woman do! If you are looking for a reasonably priced, comfortable place to lay your head in Monteverde area, the Historias Lodge will not disappoint.

My wife and I booked a tour of Costa Rica through hotel Pasatiempo and our lodging was arranged for us. Historias Lodge was the second place we stayed. It very nice and comfortable. The owners were very gracious and accommodating. They went out of their way to help with all our inquiries. The rooms were very clean. The beds were comfortable. The property layout was unique. All the accommodations felt very private. Breakfast was amazing! I highly recommend staying here.

We stayed for two nights, nice little place, private, hot water, clean, mini bar and safe. Only downfall in all my time in central america I have never paid more then 7 us dollars for laundry they tried charging over 30. It is not central to town but a grocery store is a short 2 min walk.

I loved the Historias Lodge. The family that runs the lodge is very friendly and always willing to help - Alba booked a horseback riding trip that I really enjoyed, they help with transportation, etc. I loved the family's friendly and quiet dogs hanging out around the property - very cute (and I am a cat person).

Location provides a quick cab ride or a nice walk to town though extremely challenging for anyone that does not exercise regularly. Keep in mind that Santa Elena is very hilly so almost anyplace not located in the very small downtown area will have the same walk - that's why taxis are all over the place and the cost for a taxi is reasonable. There is a nice bakery near the lodge as well so you won't have to go into town.

Breakfast can be purchased for $8 and you must sign up the night before and indicate what time you plan to eat. It's a great value (I spent $6 at the bakery). We had pancakes and eggs made to order, gallo pinto, and fresh fruit. There were other foods available as well - a few cereal choices, for example, but I was plenty full. Coffee, tea, and juice were provided.

The room was very comfortable and clean. We had a triple for 2 people so I assume they were bully booked (Christmas) and therefor We never needed A/C - chilly in Monteverde - so the temperature was comfortable in the room. The lodge had the best hot shower in Costa Rica - lots of pressure and I never ran out of hot water. The double bed was a standard hotel bed for a hotel of this size - don't expect a Heavenly Bed but I slept fine. We had an extra blanket in the room which was helpful. Security was better than most of the other CR hotels - a keyed safe in the room. Also the door had a deadbolt and the entire lodge has a high fence around it with a gate at night and the doors can be easily monitored by the staff (not that I was even remotely concerned in this lovely town).

The lodge has many places to sit outside and read if you want to relax. I think there is an outdoor bar in some seasons but it was closed while we were there.

Room Tip: A second floor room away from the lobby is best if you want to sleep in as people congregate outside...

Santa Elena/Monteverde is a nice little area around the Cloud Forest and this hotel fit into the setting well. The rooms were not my personal taste, but were in good working order and clean enough. The breakfast was wonderful and the staff was lovely. Our bathroom in our large 4-bed room was falling apart but functioning. It could use a good bathroom update. It was a pleasant stay as part of our adventure tour, but not my favorite hotel on the trip. There was a small safe in the room.

Definitely recommend this place! My girlfriends and I were only here for one night, but we found our room to be a good size, very clean, and affordable. The customer service was superb - Alba is energetic, funny, and very helpful. At the last minute, my girlfriends and I decided to take a night tour of the rainforest, and she was able to set that up for us quickly - complete with a friendly and very knowledgeable guide. Breakfast was yummy, too. We loved Historias so much, and Monteverde in general, we tried to stay an extra night, but unfortunately, it didn't work out with our itinerary.

Beautiful wood and great big ivy plants greet you here at Historias. The rooms are cool, beds are more than comfortable enough, and breakfast feels like you are at your moms house. Alba is very friendly and helpful and the wifi reaches all the way to across the couryard and up to the balcony. Another plus is the short walk to town (just watch out its downhill going but big uphills on the way back)
