This has the potential to be a lovely place, with a little more TLC. I got the impression they maybe fell on a bit of hard times, and its not what it once was. The owner Vitalis and his son Robert are charming. Very friendly and interested in chatting, learning about travelers, and helping with arrangements for tours etc. But they are not onsite. So although breakfast is "advertised" as 7:30 am, the owner arrived a little before 8, then started preparing... makes for a rush when you have a pickup at 8:30 and you're trying to gobble down the plate. Grounds are very private, with hummingbirds around, and if you're lucky, a flock of wild parrots. Trail through the woods with some giant strangler figs is wonderful for some exercise. Weak wifi. Doesn't really reach the rooms - which is fine in the day when the reception/breakfast area is open, but once they close up and leave, you need to sit on the steps next to the door to get a signal. GREAT views over the mountains and gulf of Nicoya - with sunsets if the clouds stay away.
Rooms are spartan, and could use a fresh coat of paint, a good cleaning in the corners for cobwebs, and definitely new bed linens. Mine was so worn out, the sheets wouldnt stay on the bed, so I spent most of the time directly on the mattress. They only made up the rooms every other day. About a 15 minutes walk to the center of town.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view. If you want wifi, stay close to the breakfast area. If you want quiet, make sure no one is in the room next door. Walls are paper thin.

the owner was very helpful.
the rooms are basic and nice
the only problem is that you can hear the next room (and they can hear you)
the location is great , very close to salvatura park, coffee tour and the city (but you must have a car, it is not on the city)

We spent four nights here in March 2012. The owner is very nice, helpful, and knowledgeable and cooks a good breakfast! The room was very basic, but clean; and the sunsets from the front porch were incredible. It's a little way out of Santa Elena, but the owner is more than willing to help arrange transportation (as well as other excursions in the area). I would definitely stay here again.

Before we booked this hotel, we knew it was going to be basic and for the price of about 50 dollars a night, you can't really go wrong. As mentioned in a previous review, there is not much out there. The room was okay, not very clean (dustbunny's and cobwebs), but the bathroom was a good size and the shower was good. The best things about this hotel are the location, with stunning views of the valley and the Nicoya Gulf, and the very friendly owner, Vitalis. He was very helpful in giving directions and information about the area and he served a pretty decent breakfast in the mornings.
We were lucky that the weather was beautiful when we were there, so late in the afternoon, a few guests hung out on the porch in front of the rooms to socialize and exchange travel tips, which was great way to past the time, as there are no TV's in the rooms and the wifi was down. I can recommend this hotel if you're on a budget and have a busy schedule for your stay in the Monteverde area!

Our stay at this hotel was definetly nothing to rave about, it was average, the room was somewhat clean, the hot shower did work, the included breakfast was average. The view is spectacular, no one can ever take that from this location. There are NO amenities here at all, so we were disappointed that when arriving from our afternoon adventure that the common area was closed up and we could not have the opportunity to mingle with other guests. So we would advise that if you intend to seclude yourself in a room with a book and your imagination, this is the place for you. If not, go into town!!

Room Tip: Go into town..
