“Little cabin on the edge of the woods”
Reviewed April 13, 2010

Stayed here 2 nights in the lower room. Great for the price, great location, Rolf was nice and helpful. 2 sets of steps to get to the lower room, not bad at all. Helpful if you have a car to skip walking the rocky driveway.
Very quiet except for the wind and birds.
The unit was adequate size, bathroom was good, no complaints. Very warm and comfy beds.
It is pretty close to town- so you aren't in the middle of no-where, but it is nice to have the convenience of going in whichever direction you like.
No internet here, but we had a good time sitting at the backpackers place downtown and surfing there, chatting with travellers and getting good travel advice there.
We were not at the room very much during the day, so I can't say much about the wildlife encounters then, but Rolf said that lately the monkeys have gone somewhere else.
We did see an armodillo at night.

I stayed at The Rainbow Lodge with my family (my cousins are 8 and 10 and LOVED it). We saw monkeys in the trees right outside our room both days that we stayed there, and there is a beautiful panoramic view of the valley and the cloud forest. Rolf is the owner, and he was more than hospitable. He helped us plan everything that we did in Monteverde, always had fresh towels and bananas to feed the monkeys ready for us, and was there to greet us at the end of the day to ask how our tour was. I even left behind a very important and special journal in the lodge, and after contacting Rolf through e-mail, he personally mailed it to me in California, without charging me anything, and with a very pleasant attitude. If you want something that isn't the mainstream, resorty feel and if you want a little privacy and time with your family, and don't mind a 10 minute walk to town, Rainbow Lodge is the perfect place to stay.

Had a great visit here, Rolf is a great host arranging the zip line for us picked us up and dropped us off at the hotel. When we returned there was a full rainbow to greet us (others in the van jumped out as well to see this beautiful sight). The mini apartment we stayed in was clean with a full kitchen and plenty roomy. The porch that looks into the woods and valley is a great place to relax after busy days in Monterverde/St Elena. At the end of our visit Rolf was very helpful with directions to our next destination saving time and seeing more small towns, villages and great views on the ride instead of highway.

What a find! There are two houses on the property, one is family size, and the other has an downstaris and upstairs room. We stayed in the upstairs room which I HIGHLY recommend, so book early. The views in this room are absolutely stunning (see pictures)!!! I doubt that you could find anything else like it in Monteverde. The room was also very comfortable. The bed was the best we had slept on during our trip. The owner was extremely helpful with booking excursions such as night walks and zip lining. If you are staying in Monteverde I recommend that you stay at Rainbow Valley Lodge.

This place is very aptly described in the previous reviews. The owner, Rolf, has just the right mix, and for those of us who don't speak Spanish, it's nice to find someone who is so able and willing to bridge that gap. Rolf knows the area really well, and is able to make great recommendations. He offers to make the arrangements too, and he is able to be there when you need him, without being intrusive. We loved our stay in Monteverde, and I wish we could have stayed longer. There is plenty to do, and yet, staying just 10 minutes out of town (a very small town) - it was nice to feel like you were "out in nature" without being far away from it all.
Rolf also made point of telling me that he loves having Dutch people stay with him. I offered to write a review in Dutch, but then realized - any Dutch person who travels to Costa Rica is going to know English. Perfekt dus.

Perfect, amazing, beatiful views, nice people, pleasant place to stay!

We have spent an amazing 4 days in Rainbow Valley Lodge in December 2009! We stayed at upper room and the name "Rainbow Valley Lodge" really fits to this place! We saw beatiful rainbows overarching the valley several times. We loved sitting at the terrace and just watching the sunshine across the valley. The nature is close to you there, you can observe monkeys and coatis jumping in the trees in front of the terrace.

We would like to thank Rolf, the owner, for his excellent service, for being ready to help us everytime, for recommendation of perfect services of the guide in Monteverde reservation (Mr. Juan Carlos :-)), for the coupons to get some discounts, for taking us to the town and telling us which places are worth to go there.....

The room was 100% clean, well furnished (incl. kitchen), I appreciated hot water in the shower and very nice and stylised surroungings.

I recommend this place 100% and I wish we come back some day! :-)

RVL was a great place to stay in Santa Elena. Rolf welcomed us warmly and with plenty of coupons for dining and things to do in Monteverde, which was awesome. The short walk into town is easy and safe, day or night. We highly recommend Cafe Carube for lunch or dinner and Donde Henry for breakfast - we had coupons for both. Saw coatis, monkeys and agouti, all on the front porch. And the only place reviewed in the Monteverde area that didnt have scorpions in the rooms. We would definitely say there again when we return to Monteverde.
