“The best value and service in Costa Rica”
Reviewed February 8, 2009

We were a group of 4 adults and stayed in the family cabin for 3 nights. Really well equipped, cosy, homely feel and plenty of room. Was also great to have 2 bathrooms. We had a fantastic stay, was the perfect base for the cloudforests and canopy tour. Slightly out of town - only 10 minutes walk away, really peaceful, beautiful rainbow views and lots of wildlife. The thing we will never forget about this place is how kind and helpful Rolf, the owner is. Can't recommend it enough!

We stayed with another couple in a two bedroom 'cabina' with two baths, kitchen, shaded porch and beautiful views. The price was very good, the accommodations were excellent and the owner was as helpful and friendly (from Minnissota) as you could want. Nothing fancy, but well equiped, convenient to Monteverde Cloud Forest and local sites of interest. A great find. And there really are rainbows all over this valley.

We stayed at this place for 3 nights. The first 2 nights we stayed in the upper room and the last night we stayed in the lower room. Both rooms are great but, if you can, book the upper one. It's a little bit more expensive but the great views are well worth it.
We saw more wild animals during our stay at the Rainbow Valley Lodge than in the Santa Elena Reserve! We saw several coatis, 1 monkey and 1 agouti. We could actually get quite close to the coatis...:)

The location is really good: very quiet, in the middle of nature, but still really close to downtown.

The onwer, Rolf, is a great guy. He was very helpful and tried to make our stay as pleasant as possible.

If you are coming to Monteverde area, this is definitely THE place to stay!

Wish we could give this place 10 stars. I hate to spread the word for fear it will be booked up next time we go back. This was our favorite place of the 5 we stayed at in Costa Rica. The owner, Rolf Hansen, was above and beyond helpful before and during our stay. Before we arrived, he welcomed emails on anything and everything (canopy tours, public buses, weather) and was able to book tours and buses for us at either the same price we would have paid (but without the hassle of doing it ourselves), or many times, at a discount. While we were there, he went out of his way running around town trying to find us a later shuttle to Manuel Antonio (it didn't work out, but thanks for trying, Rolf!).

The lodge is beautiful. We stayed in the upper room with canopy views and loved it-- and it was so nice to have the kitchenette. There's even tupperware, which we used to carry some of our $1 pineapple on our hike. And we, too, saw a rainbow over the valley one afternoon. The hot water shower with good water pressure was very appreciated.

The lodge is walkable to town in the day but the road is a little scary with cars at night. That said, Rolf was very willing to drive us to town at our convenience and the night we took a cab it was less than $2. Definitely worth it to stay in a place as quiet and beautiful as this. Lots of animal visitors-- we had a monkey, an agouti, and 11 coatimundi one morning. This is partly because of the ever-ready supply of bananas, but we put our feeding animal concerns aside for a day and enjoyed the company.

We had a tour of the new cabin he just finished, and it looks great. We'd stay again in a heartbeat.

Thanks, Rolf!

I don't know where to begin... I would love to shout from those beautiful mountain tops how special this place is... we stayed there over New Years and are a family of four who stayed at 4 other places during our 2 weeks.
All the positive comments written here are 101% true! There IS a rainbow and a valley too! The photos are real... and you too can take the exact same ones there.
The monkey we named Ahme (Aa-mee), the other wildlife and birds... the well kept grounds from the stone laid floor to the sky light to the woodwork (trees with branch cut to use as the support beams inside)... all PERFECT. Safe. Free Parking. A good walk to town or go explore... we had our own home/new cabin with mini stove, full fridge, COMFY beds, etc etc etc... even some coffee, sugar, etc for us. The attention to detail is wonderful... and not seen elsewhere.
We tried to change our plans to stay longer but Expedia were/are terrible to deal with for the next leg of our trip (we did not book this lodge with Expedia and will never use Expedia again... read the fine print, Expedia has many conditions!).
For what you get at Rainbow Valley Lodge, you pay far too little.... I fully recommend a minimum of 1 week... there is so much to do and see all around the area but you also need time to relax!
I hope Rolf got a guest book now as that is all that was missing!

This place is an amazing value with an excellent view, great, clean rooms and a helpful owner, Rolf, who will make recommendations for activities and generally be helpful with whatever you need. Don't be put off by the fact that it's not right in town, it is walkable in the daytime and at night the cabs are plentiful and the ride is less than $2. If I had to complain about anything (and this is a stretch) it's that there is no coffee nearby in the morning (sorry, I'm an addict) however, if you are motiviated, there is a coffee-maker and a mini-fridge in the room. But in short, I loved this place and if I ever return to Monteverde, I would never stay anywhere else.

  • Liked — the view and the price
  • Disliked — no coffee nearby and also you have to be fairly agile to get to the room on the trail

My husband and I stayed in the upper room at the end of November through the beginning of December. We absolutely enjoyed our stay at the lodge, and would highly recommend it. The owner is incredibly nice and so helpful. He's willing to give a ride into town each day, and he helped set us up on a couple of tours. The best tour was in the park of Monteverde. The guide that the owner recommended could not have been better! He was knowledgeable, really friendly, and quite patient with us taking pictures. He even had us stick around longer than other groups to wait for the Quetzal to show up. A cold front came through towards the end of our stay, so we just holed up in our room for a day, and it was very comfortable just hanging out. Having the little kitchenette and the large windows really made the experience that much nicer. It was also nice to be close to town, but not be right in it. We got to see some wildlife and the view of the valley and mountains was gorgeous.
