My husband and I stayed in the upper room at the end of November through the beginning of December. We absolutely enjoyed our stay at the lodge, and would highly recommend it. The owner is incredibly nice and so helpful. He's willing to give a ride into town each day, and he helped set us up on a couple of tours. The best tour was in the park of Monteverde. The guide that the owner recommended could not have been better! He was knowledgeable, really friendly, and quite patient with us taking pictures. He even had us stick around longer than other groups to wait for the Quetzal to show up. A cold front came through towards the end of our stay, so we just holed up in our room for a day, and it was very comfortable just hanging out. Having the little kitchenette and the large windows really made the experience that much nicer. It was also nice to be close to town, but not be right in it. We got to see some wildlife and the view of the valley and mountains was gorgeous.

We were about the only guests around at the time, and I believe some of the cabins were still being built. We had the downstairs cabin in the 2 story building, and it was surrounded by trees and great views. We had some critters visit us on the common porch area, including the very friendly cat. And the ownder Hans was very helpful, giving us rides into town whenever we needed. The room was clean and very nice, with great views.

I was really looking forward to our stay at Rainbow Valley Lodge and must say that it was everything I had hoped for.

We are a family of four and booked both rooms. We really only used the lower room for sleeping and spent most our time in the upper room.

The view from the kitchen area was as nice as everyone has described.

We were fortunate enough to have a visit from the coatimundis just as we arrived.

I can't say enough about how well we were treated by Rolf. He is a truly nice guy and went out of his way for us many times. He arranged our transfers before and after our stay. He booked our guide for the reserve. He arranged for our Zip Line outing with Aventura. He also made good recommendations for places to eat.

What was appreciated the most though was that he drove my wife into town to help her sort things out at the bank after the bank machine ate her card the day before.

This reminds me - avoid using the bank machine at Bank of Costa Rica in Monteverde. When the bank employee retrieved the card she had a quite a collection of cards that had been eaten.

The kids spent an afternoon making artwork from plant material they found outside the rooms. Because Rolf was so nice to them, they gave him the picture of hummingbirds that they made.

Rolf was busy working on building some additional rooms. It looks like they will be nice when done. He again went out of his way to try and make sure that we weren't disturbed by the construction.

The Rainbow Valley Lodge was the best deal of any hotel we stayed at in Costa Rica.

We have stayed 3 nights at Rainbow Valley Lodge. Perched above deep valley, short walk to Santa Elena and with fabulous views, this lodge offers fantastic value for money.

From the upper apartment the views are really unique. You can watch animals roaming the trees for food, upclose and personal. The owner, Rolf Hanson, is as friendly as any Tico and he is always around to help with good advice, and with a smile.

Two persons have all the room they need, yet our daughter had no complaints using the additional bed.

Our advice: get out of bed early, as just waiting for the sun to shine over Monteverde, with a cup of hot coffee on the balcony, is well worth traveling the bumpy road to Monteverde.

We stayed at this lodge because we read so many wonderful reviews on Trip Advisor and it was our favorite place of the entire trip!
Rolf, the owner, was so welcoming and warm and helped us out with our every need. He really went the extra mile to make sure we had a great stay with him and set up all our day trips with the local tour companies. I recommend staying on the 2nd floor of his lodge as you get views of the entire cloud forest which is breathtaking to say the least.

There isn't any food at this lodge, but the upper room does have a small fridge, microwave, sink and dishes and there is a grocery store in town. Also, it is about a mil (or $2.00 US) to taxi into the town which is really cheap compared to other areas of Costa Rica. There is a lot to do in Monteverde and the town is has some nice shops.

We def. recommend this place to stay, you will have a great experience rain or shine and Rolf is a great host!

Rainbow Valley Lodge was, by far, our most enjoyable accommodations during our trip 4-stop, 12 day tour of Costa Rica. The rooms are new, very clean, and have a stunning view of the Cloud Forest valley that is absolutely "to die for". The bonus was a swing-through by white-faced monkeys that were literally within reach of our rooms. On top of the location, Rolf, the owner of Rainbow Valley Lodge was, again by far, the most helpful person we encountered in Costa Rica before our trip. Rolf helped us arrange transportation ahead of time from the airport in San Jose as well as to/from other areas outside of Monteverde, recommending local sites, and in general was a fabulous host! Our family of five stayed in both of Rainbow's rooms and would recommend this site as outstanding! In fact, we intend to return to Rainbow Valley Lodge on a return trip to Costa Rica. Check this place out. You will not regret it!!

Great place, but not for everyone. The American gent who built and runs this small lodge is extraordinarily knowledgeable and well versed on all aspects of visiting Monteverde and its culturally distint environs. He is good natured and gave us lots of helpful info that made a real difference in our experience,. The rooms are literally right at the edge of the cloud forest. At 6:00 a.m., the sun pours in, the birds go nuts and you feel so thoroughly awake, yet so unburdened by the early hour. The rooms are comfortalbe. A taxi trip ($2) get syou to restaurants/shops. Room rates are low.

One caution. I am 60. Getting from the lodge to the road, the officel, and partking area entails traversing a somewhat steep incline. For most people, it is 45 seconds of strenuous walking. For those over 62, or otherwise challenged, getting to and from the lodge would be challenging. I loved this place. Rolf, the owner, is the kind of savvy, practical person one does well to enounter in unfamiliar surroudings.
