“Pretty Good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2007

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights as part of a tour of Costa Rica. Beware the “Costa Rican” massage road that you need to take to get there, it was undoubtedly the worst road I have ever been on!

Room – Quite large with lots of windows and the all wood interior gave it a very natural feel. On the downside were 2 items: (1) no heating meant that we were extremely cold all night, and (2) the walls are very thin so you can hear the activities of the next room very clearly. Be advised that the rooms do not have a TV or phone.
Food – Continental breakfast consisted of a plate of fruit and some toast, kind of weird but oddly filling. The lunches and dinners that we had were very good and reasonably priced. You can always head into town (a short drive away) if you are looking for something different.
Activities – The lodge is located right in the cloud forest and they have created a number of hiking trails that allow you to explore the surroundings up close. Also located right at the lodge is the Canopy Tour which, in my opinion, you must do. You get to do 7 zips and 2 repels and it offers a great combination of stunning views and excitement.
Don’t expect much excitement after the sun goes down; there really isn’t much to do. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially after a long day of exploring the trails, but it would be nice to have some way to unwind a bit.
Overall – We had an enjoyable time at the Cloud Forest Lodge but 2 nights was definitely enough for us. It was very cool and wet (of course, what do you expect in a cloud) which do to the lack of heat in the rooms began to take a toll on us.

We asked our tour operator [--] to book us 2 nights at the Cloud Forest lodge in Santa Elena/Monteverde as we had read some poor feedback about the welcome from the staff at the Trapp Family Lodge. The Cloud Forest Lodge is 20 mins walk out of town so a car is helpful. The lodge is high up on the hillside out of town and has spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean with a beautiful sunset every night. Don't expect 5 star rooms with TV and A/C (not needed in Nov) - the lodge offers classic cabins (you don't go there to spend hours in the room). In the main area you have the reception, bar, restaurant, lounge, internet, gift shop area. The enclosed viewing area/terrace has seats where you can watch the hummingbirds (see also saw a sloth) or chat with the other guests. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the lodge manager took us out into the garden to look at the various birds nesting at night. Although the menu was somewhat limited the food was fine. Within the lodge grounds there are a number of Cloud Forest trails plus the Original Canopy Trail Zip Lines. I loved the Zip Lines but there were all over too quickly !!!
We go away remembering the evening we watched the hummingbirds feeding and the sun set in the distance - it was magical.

The third and fourth nights were at the Cloud forest lodge in Santa Elena/Monteverde
The Santa Elena/Monteverde area offers a choice of accommodations based on your purpose there. There are several hotels in “downtown” Santa Elena that look like they would be great to stay at if you wanted to be walking distance to many, many fine (and casual) restaurants and shops and tour guides, with the trade off being presumably more noise and dust, or if you are opting for a more communing with nature experience, one of the places just out of town is more your style. The Cloud Forest Lodge is one of the latter. It’s about a mile or so out of town set up onto a hillside and features a full service bar/restaurant/lounge/internet/gift shop area, with a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean glimmering in the distance, and a guaranteed beautiful sunset every night. The duplex type cabins don’t have TV’s, or even heating or cooling units for that matter, (apparently unneeded at that altitude) but the lounge area has a big screen where you can sit on comfy couches and chat with fellow adventurers about what you did that day, and watch the Super Bowl – at least that’s what I did. While we were there, a sloth was “nesting” with her baby in a tree just outside the lobby door, and the lodge’s owner was eager to point it out – which was great, as we would have surely not noticed it on our own. Food at the lodge was good, but if you get the chance you must eat at Sophia’s restaurant in town. The food was great, the service superb, and the prices very reasonable. In fact pretty much everywhere we ate had fair prices. I didn’t feel like I was overcharged for anything.
As an added bonus, the ‘gift shop’ area of the lobby had some of the nicest crafty-type items we found anywhere on the trip. It has a small but surprisingly complete selection of very well made ‘stuff’ for good prices. There are also some very good trails surrounding the Lodge, which we walked in an attempt to see the elusive Quetzal bird, to no avail, but I did see some kind of turkey-looking thing scampering about.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Lodge lies about 10-15 minutes walking from the main road of Santa Elena. The rooms are spacious and very nice. Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. We didn't have had dinner in the restaurant but the included breakfast was a bit poor. At the hotel grounds there is a canopy tour which was very nice.

Tip: go and have dinner at "La concina de Lena" on your way to Monterverde Cloud Forest Reserve. There is a big sign beside the road "Typical food for reasonable prices". The place doesn't look quite western but the food is great, service even better and the price is really cheap. Check it out!

This hotel turned out to be a great find when visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. For one, it is only about half a mile out of Santa Elena where all the restaurants, grocery stores, and majority of the other hotels are located but it is actually in the cloud forest on its own private land so you feel closer to the nature you came to visit. Additionally, they have their own set of trails on the property and the lodge has a great view of the ocean. The staff spoke english and was so friendly and helpful and the breakfast at the restaurant was actually really good (there are actually a remarkable number of good restaurants in Santa Elena). Room was simple but big, newly renovated, and super clean.

The other great thing about this hotel is you can book it on the internet without the hassle of having to call the hotel or get a credit card confirmation by fax--convenience of the modern age is a definite plus. Only minus of our stay was because it is up on a hill above town you don't get protection from the elements and are subject to the persistent mist and winds common in Monteverde.
