“An ideal base from which to explore Monteverde”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 3, 2014

We stayed here for 4 nights in February and could not have been more pleased with our choice. As non drivers, we appreciated the fact that the lodge was in walking distance to Santa Elena's coffee shops and restaurants, and also the bus stop for the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Although the walk could seem a bit long and steep after a tiring day out, (it is mostly uphil from Santa Elena) , to me, the accommodation at Monteverde Rustic Lodge more than compensates. The room we had was the best we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Costa Rica, with an enormous shower and a balcony with stunning wooden furniture. The same furniture is in the breakfast room. We did not have an issue with noise from neighbours ?
Finally, José, Marcelo and Ernesto could not have been more friendly and accommodating.
We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 8 has a large shower and balcony.

Rustic Lodge is a beautiful sparkling clean hotel which is the real gem in Monteverde. We (family of 3 people from Canada) had a very spacious room decorated with great taste (as the rest of the hotel). Big bathroom had very good hot shower.
Dining Room where breakfast is served looks like high end restaurant with cozy warm feeling. Breakfast is home-made, delicious and fresh. Grounds of the hotel are beautiful also like everything else.
Brothers Jose and Marcelo who own hotel work there themselves. They are very special people, very warm and personable, who you want to befriend for life from the very first day. Certainly will choose it again if we return to Monteverde – it is pleasure to be there.
We highly recommend this place to everybody, you will not be disappointed!

Hosts Jose and Ernesto were superb. They took care of everything for us including arranging transportation. The lodge is beautiful and conveniently located within walking distance of downtown Santa Elena. The grounds are lovely. Our rooms were quiet and spotless. Meals were delicious.

We highly recommend Monteverde Rustic Lodge for anyone planning to visit the Monteverde area.

Ernesto & Jose were very welcoming!! Location is great for Rain Forest tour & other activities in the Monteverde area. The setting of the lodge is very relaxing, while still being close to town. Although, for many the walk would be too much. May be better to take transportation or drive if you have a car. Breakfasts were delicious, especially the coffee!! They were very helpful with suggestions of where to go for dinner. Would definitely stay here again!!

Wonderful beautiful rooms, incredible wood tables, great food, and the young men at reception were so kind........ what ever we needed assistance with, they were there to help - and they have a huge sense of humor. So close to town, but out enough to enjoy the country. Walking 5 minutes. I can't say enough about this wonderful place.

Room Tip: See Jose for any questions he'll have the answers

We stayed 3 nights at this hotel and were really impressed with the courteous staff, cleanliness of the rooms and great location. WiFi worked perfectly in our room. When we arrived, Ernesto greeted us like we were part of his family. And he gave us the larger room due to a full capacity at the hotel. Both he and Jose phoned to arrange our activities while we were there and ensured that we had a great stay. Ernesto found a sloth in the tree behind the hotel to show us which was an added bonus. Breakfast was yummy and the staff serving were also very courteous. Thanks to all the great staff for making our visit memorable.

First, the things that will apply to everyone: the staff is courteous and attentive. Our room was clean and really attractive. The breakfast that comes with the room is simple but very good. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful, and it's outside of town enough to be fairly quiet all evening long. (If you don't walk well, I wouldn't stay here; the hill from town is no joke, though I'm sure they'd find a way to help you.) They arranged any pick-up we needed for excursions in the area and found us an excellent guide (Cristian) for the MCFR. I liked this place a lot, the staff even more. You will have a good time.

But I want to offer a bit more from my trip to explain just how good they are to their guests.

Two things I do not advise in Costa Rica: taking shuttles from place to place without building in plenty of extra time at the end of the ride, and getting extremely sick on the last day of your trip. I did both of these things when my girlfriend and I stayed here in February, which I offer as context to say: this place is wonderful.

We had booked three nights here, but because our shuttle stopped for dinner en route to Monteverde, we arrived about an hour after the lodge office closed (9pm -- it is a family-run business). We found a room for the night and came back the next morning, after breakfast had ended, but they offered us breakfast anyway if we hadn't eaten (we had). They had kept the room for us, but when we checked out they charged only the two nights we actually stayed. It's a reasonable thing to do, but not something they HAD to do. We really appreciated the gesture.

We were supposed to take a car back to San Jose at 6am on our last morning to catch a noon flight, but I got very sick around 3:30am and couldn't travel for several hours. My girlfriend rebooked a number of things for later, and by about 10am I was well enough to venture out of the room. We sat in the kitchen waiting for a midday shuttle, and someone came by with glasses of juice. Again, it was an unnecessary but very kind gesture.

When our rebooked shuttle was late to pick us up, the person working the desk got the information about our booking and called the company. He didn't let up until someone local was on the way, and they had agreed to charge us the shuttle price for a private trip. He was clearly annoyed that we had been forced to wait. I was in pretty awful condition the last morning, and they didn't expect us to be around at all anymore, but they treated us with as much care as they had throughout.

Jose, the rest of the family, and everyone who works here take pride in giving their guests a great experience. You will be treated well.
