We loved our stay here. The staff were more than helpful and honest in what they recommended and didn't recommend we do. The environment is full of opportunities to get to know other backpackers and hang out on the hammock and porch out front. At ten things got pretty quiet, and we were able to get a good night's rest. Don't expect to nap much, though, there's always great music playing and people having a good time throughout the day. Overall we had an awesome time just getting to know other travelers and hanging out with the staff.

We stayed in one of the new double rooms with private baths, worth the small extra cost. As others have said, the staff were excellent - knowledgeable, friendly, and great suggestions on what to do in the area. Special thanks to Diego who gave us great advice, not just the ziplining and the Monteverde Reserve (which are not to be missed), but also a long hike to a waterfall that we would never have known about. This was the best value we found in Costa Rica, it delivered well over what we paid (and they saved us $ on activities and shuttles too).

We stayed in one of their new rooms - very worth the small additional cost. Staff were beyond helpful....best service we´ve ever received at a backpackers in Costa Rica and all over the world. If you book any tripsor tours do it through them - they were more honest and helpful and better priced than the local information and travel shops. We made the mistake of not doing it this way and we paid for it!

this hostel is great. walking through the main building, i don't think i would have wanted to stay there. looked a bit worn down, shabby, not really clean. but! love their new rooms, they're very cute. i don't think the room we stayed in was quite done as there was no nightstand or mirror in the bathroom, but it was for one night so no big deal. they plan on having a hookup so you can play your ipod on speakers in the room - what a great idea. and the walls must be pretty heavy duty because it was a pleasant surprise not being able to hear the people in neighboring rooms. the staff is absolutely wonderful and really, really helpful.

We stayed here for three nights in a double with shared bath for $16 per night (yes! that's $8 per person per night, for a private room). As all reviewers have said, the staff were the best we met in all of Costa Rica. They were simply wonderful and even helpful to people who came in, couldn't get a room, and were seeking advice on tours, etc.

We found the pension to be clean and generally tidy (though with the common kitchen in constant use, stuff can seem to be everywhere). This is not a place you should stay if you are uncomfortable with sharing common spaces with many people. While clean, the place is certainly somewhat run-down. The sheets are well-worn, as are the utensils in the well-equipped kitchen. Since Santa Elena is in a cloud forest, everything is kind of foggy and damp--including the accommodations.

We were definitely on a tight budget, after my boyfriend's wallet was stolen (on a bus in san jose), and the Pension was an incredible value because it allowed us to buy groceries and make our own meals, and pack meals for our hikes and other outdoor adventures. In a place where every activity costs $35 or more per person, the availability of this great kitchen made a huge difference.

We loved it here (stayed a day longer than we had planned). The vibe was cool, the people (guest of all ages, truly, not just young backpackers) we met were lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed it here and would return.

Simply put: the extraordinarily helpful staff, the laid back youthful but quiet vibe, the location, and the price are all reasons to stay here. The rooms are trendy in a very raw and industrial kind of way - the place exudes character. OK, it's not impeccably clean but it was certainly sanitary and my wife (who's a neat freak) and I both felt very comfortable. We had a double bed with a private bath for $24 a night. This was the best deal we found in the country and I slept like a log. I would definitely go back here and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone. Best tour advice in town by the way, even if you're not staying here.
