This hotel was recently renovated. We had an okay stay but for the money, I honestly expected more. Bugs are common in Costa Rica, but the staff should have at least try to keep the lobby free of dead bugs. On day of arrival, there were tons of dead flies, butterflies, and bugs throughout the lobby (worst at the windows). The rooms were adequate but beds were equivalent to motel 6. Breakfast was good and staff was friendly--did the bare minimum.

For the price, I suppose one could not complain much. Our biggest compaint was that our room was a bug breeding ground. I think I had at least 15 mosquito bites after the first night. After I sprayed the entire room with off, the bugs started dropping. The floor was dotted with mosquitos, as with our blankets. It's a spartan accomodation, offering clean rooms however, hardly any service or amenities. There is no wi-fi, no airconditioning, no coffee makers, no room safe. However, the front desk will put your valuables into a sealed envelope and keep it in their safe for you. Advice: make sure you personally seal the envelope shut yourself, and write your room number across the seals to make sure it has not been tampered with. One additional tip: buy a small lock for your luggage and use that as a safe. If you don't have one ask for a "candado" (padlock) at the local everything store in Santa Elena (name starts with a "V" but I forgot). The room keys are attached to a big wooden totem pole looking thing and must weigh at least a pound. It's old fashioned but something charming about it too. The restaurant (cafeteria) offers a limited selection, however, the server lady was nice. Oh and try their home made salsa -- very good.

Room Tip: Try the stand alone bungalows.

The Hotel Montaña had great food in the restaurant! I especially recommend the peppercorn tenderloin. The family-style breakfasts were also tasty, with a lot of variety and an amazing marmalade. The huge lobby was outfitted with very reverberant surfaces which made it quite noisy, and the only available wifi was in the lobby, or the 'bar,' which unfortunately smelled rather musty. It was a better idea to have afternoon drinks on the balcony off of the dining room. The rooms down the hill were huge, but you did have to climb a fairly steep, but short, hill to get to the lobby. The balcony on my room was a calm oasis and a great place to read and/or observe the wildlife, especially if you have a good set of binoculars.

I spent two nights at this hotel on a school trip. The view from my porch was spectacular, as was the food and the service I had. The rooms are located down a hill, so it could be potentially problematic to those who are older or have disabilities. I did have a small ant problem, but a little deet bug spray on the floor by the porch doors did the trick.

We had a soda from earlier in the day in the fridge. Then we went to have dinner and discovered the fridge swarmed with ants. If there would have been more the ants would have opened the door. In the morning the floor looked like a peppered floor full of dead ants. Cannot complain about the view. The furniture is out dated, the bed needs to be replaced and the room have a funky smell. In conclusion we had a hard time sleeping.

I have never seen a more beautiful place in my life! Whenever things are tough, I close my eyes and put myself back on that balcony. I have a panoramic picture that I took of the World's most beautiful sunset on my wall that I took on my visit there. I highly recommend the view!

Room Tip: Make sure to ask for a room with a full view!
