Frog pond and butterfly farm share the same entrance but are different attractions both with quite high prices. Evening visit to the Frogpond using torches allows a view of nearly all the exhibits so it's just about worth it.

We got to see many different frogs and toads, as well as a couple of snakes. We went at night, as suggested, but its very cold and windy tonight, so the frogs weren't very active, our guide said. It was a nice little tour, and took us just under an hour. I don't think it's worth $12/person, maybe $5-7. It's enclosed so maybe only do it if you love frogs, or if its a really rainy/windy night and you are looking for something a little sheltered.

If you like nature and want to get a bit more familiar with the amphibians in Moteverde, this is the place! You can see some poison dart frogs which are very very colorful and of course the red eyed tree frog which is the national symbol of Costa Rica. You have the opportunity to visit the Frog Pond twice - at night and during the day - with one ticket. Dont forget to take your camera for the night visit, as at that time frogs are active. I really liked it!

We were given a tip to visit this place at night when the frogs are more active - they couldn't have been more right! You get a guided tour by flash light and see so many more frogs! Great for nature lovers and kids!

My husband and I visited the Monteverde Ranario in the afternoon. Please be aware that they have more activities than just the frog viewing, but each will cost you. The prices have also recently gone up.
One very good thing about the Ranario is that if you come in the daytime, you can keep your ticket and come back at night. This is exactly what we did. The frogs are much more active at night, so you will get a better chance to see some of the shy frogs.
There are a ton of fairly large terrariums with many species of frogs, from toads, to poison darts, to the red eyed tree frog. The frogs seem to be well taken care of, and the facilities are well kept. The area is in a green house with cement floors, for the most part, so no muck or hiking.
Photography is encouraged, but be aware that flash photography WILL blind the frogs, so even if you go at night, use a flashlight, not a camera flash, it is not just the light, but the quick flash that can damage the frogs' vision. We were not told this by the Ranario employees, we learned it later on and were pretty upset.
