This garden contains hundreds of orchid species, from mighty to miniature, that flourish uniquely in the Cloud Forest. It is a wonderland of colors, forms, and textures, cared for by a skilled and loving family that model what it means to care for creation.

The way the flowers are displayed - growing in their natural settings, seen with natural light - allows close encounters and informed descriptions. There is no wall between you and the flowers; visitors are trusted to get as close with eyes or the camera as possible. The result is breathtaking.

The entry fee is a paltry $20, and is worth much more.

Alvaro Salazar has spent 20 years tendinf this unusual garden with 450 varieties of orchids all native to Costa Rica, of which at least 150 are in bloom at any time. Some look like bugs, some are nearly nano-scale, but they are interesting, and the pet parrots add a little to yoir enjoyment.

Our daughter is not inclined to enjoy anything outside the Disney Magic Kingdom, but she came back from a tour of the Orchid Garden with nothing but enthusiasm, knowledge, and an appreciation for the variety and mysterious appeal of orchids.

Well done!

We happened upon this garden on our last day in Santa Elena. Orchids are my favorite flower, and the price was reasonable, so we decided to go for it! It was awesome! We had a great guide who provided us with magnifying glasses, pointed out the world's smallest orchids, the orchids that had a tiny little "sloth face" inside it, and my favorite, the ones that smelled like honey! After the tour, we were allowed to stay as long as we wanted to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. We even happened upon a parakeet sitting in a tree on our way out!
