“Bedbugs!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 8, 2014

We were in room 10 and we unfortunately encountered bedbugs during the night.

Staff is friendly, shared bathroom is fine. Kitchen is poorly equipped and not very clean.

Also, the cat is underfed (very sweet still though). As an animal loving person I have a hard time with that.

Bedbugs are the main, and a very serious, problem though.

I think it's enough if I write that I couldn't sleep all night because of bedbugs. In the morning I checked and I found under the mattress bedbugs and their eggs as well. I took my stuffs and I went to other place. I'm look awfull. I have bedbugs bite on all my body and even on my face.

As a previous review said it, they take the deposit of a couple who left the hostal at 6:15, and the previous day , they said "don't worry there is someone at 5am..." Wasn't true! The breakfast suppose to be from 6 to 8:30. We were planning to take the firts bus to Monteverde at 6:15. of course we missed it!
But the WORST, we could'n't sleep the last night because THERE WERE MOUSE IN OUR ROOM... they take a plastic bag in our trash bin and try to go out in the big hole. So it was very noisy on the middle of the night... (and scary)
The room are not isolate at all so you can hear everything from the room next to yours, and sometimes you dont want to ear that!
Something else there was a hole in the wall, kind of wall you made to spy your neighbour, so we put paper inside to avoid to be spied.
Lack of toilet paper...
And we slept terribly, we still soreback!
The staff, 2 girls are not really friendly, never say Good morning, and spend their time speaking together...

Don't expect luxury but you get all you need: warm water, a good bed, clean towels, breakfast (bread, eggs, fruits, coffee, milk - if you want toast and/or scrumbled eggs, you have to prepare them yourself)
Santa Elena itself is a small town so everything is close by: supermarket, restaurants, busterminal, banks,...)
Have a drink and a salad at the Tree House Café (nice place), for excellent food for a very low price go 50m further at the same side of the street. There's a restaurant at the first floor (Tica Rica or something like that).
The serpentuarium is also worth visiting. With you entranceticket you can visit it again at eveningtime (just do it)

Room Tip: we stayed at room 1 (private bathroom), noisy because it's on the streetside but we were each so...

Bear in mind that this is a hostel, and at 15 USD per night, what a deal! There are a variety of different rooms offered...we paid 30 for a room that had multiple beds and a private bathroom.
Pros: It is in the center of town for Santa Elena/Monte Verde. There are places to eat, go to the ATM/Bank, and grab some groceries within a 5 minute walk. The front desk personnel such as Tony and the young ladies who work there are very helpful and can book tours that will come pick you up. Breakfast is included in the price which consists of coffee, fruit, cereal, and eggs (which you must prepare and wash your dishes after). The showers work well and we were provided (to my suprise) towels.
Cons: The walls are thin, so if you have noisy neighbors, you will hear them. Our room (#4) was directly above the office so we could hear music from the office and people booking tours...on the good note though, things settle down around here at a reasonable time so we were still able to get in some rest.
If you are traveling on a budget, I recommend it....if you are expecting 5 star luxury, this will not be a good choice for you.

Room Tip: try to get a room that is not directly above the office and hope that your neighbors are not noisy...

Friendly staff and they give good discount both on the room and on the trips. Rooms are nice and clean and the kitchen facilities are good if you want to make your own food. They speak good english and are very helpfull with organizing trips and travels further on

It's very windy in Monteverde and there was no insulation in the walls or floors. You could see right through to downstairs and there was always a draft. The private room was spacious though with a bathroom attached. They provided towels which was nice. Breakfast included was fruits, eggs, cereal, juice coffee, but you had to wash your own dishes.
