“An alright place to stay for the price”
Reviewed October 31, 2010

Hotel Sueno was an okay stay, you get what you pay for, the staff was friendly and the parking was free and safe. The room was clean but we looked for bugs (just in case) we didn’t see any but didn’t feel comfortable either. The old comforters had seen better days. The shower was a little scary and the place seem to be constructed hap-hazardly. The views were also not very appealing. The rooms did not have A/c but my wife and I were there in Oktober so it was not a big deal. The rooms are basic with no phone, amenities or anything you’d find in most hotels. It’s a great no frills place to crash but not very appealing for comfortable relaxing stays. $35 bucks is a fair price but the staff was unwilling to negotiate with the price.

In the tourist town of Santa Elena in the mountains, this is one of the cheapest hotels ($35 for two), but it may also be the worst. No A/C and room was very hot with only a small window that would open. We were saved by the cool night air for sleeping. Bottom rough sheets came off the bed at night, no mattress pad. Bathroom sink was tiny, wobbly, had only cold water. Shower was essentially cold. Breakfast was meager but cooked. Computer for guests was very slow. One good thing - the parking was secure and private.

Absolutely loved my stay at the Hotel El Sueno! Just spent the past 7 Nights in Costa Rica (1 in San Jose, 2 in La Fortuna, 1 in Santa Elena, 2 in Manuel Antonio, and 1 in Alajuela) and liked Hotel El Sueno the best. The place has a very homey feel and Rafa and his family are very warm and gracious hosts. Any questions I had or anything I needed in or around town, Rafa was able to provide and give us his tips and advice. Definitely top-notch all the way. Another plus side to the hotel was the location... Noise wasn't a problem for me as the hotel is about a block from the main street... I highly recommend this hotel.

I stayed at the Hotel El Sueno for three nights in August. Monteverde is an incredible place to visit. However, we tried to stay away from our hotel room as much as possible while we were here. We stayed here because it was recommended by Lonely Planet, as wooden paneled rooms with good views. The problem was, our room did not have a window with a view and was very musty. The bathroom smelled so bad of sewage that we had to keep the door shut during the night so we could sleep. It was incredibly noisy as the walls are paper thin. One night there were cows in the back that made noise literally all night long. It sounded like they were in our bathroom they were so loud. When someone walked down the hallway, it shook our room and woke us up. There was barely any hot water, (only if you kept the hot water at a trickle) and quite frankly, the wire contraption above the shower head freaked me out a little. Hot showers are usually not a necessity in Costa Rica, but Monteverde can be cool especially at night and so cold showers are a little more unpleasant here than elsewhere.
We still enjoyed our visit to this cloud forest, but in the future, would stay elsewhere to get a solid night´s sleep.

We rolled into town in the late afternoon and looked around for a place to stay. El sueno was on my short list and the offered us the far back room with windows facing the incredible view. For $30 we were ecstatic. It's just steps from the small downtown area and they make breakfast for you to order.
The staff (family) are wonderful and will do all they can to make your stay pleasant. We booked some tours with their son and just felt so comfortable with them.
Noise can be an issue since it is so close to town but all the other hotels in the general area have the same problem. Other than that we had a great stay at El Sueno.

overall, a nice place. We spent 2 days there, and had a good time. The place is right in the center of town, close to everything, breakfast was very good.
Only minus was the noise. Many people ride crossbikes and those get really noisy. We were there Friday night, and the noise only started to level off after midnight.
The shower was a bit tricky but we figured it out eventually.

El Sueno was a great place to stay. We paid $30/night. Our room had a very comfortable double bed, and a single bed. There were lots of comforters, which were necessary when it poured rain for 2 days. The breakfast was included, and was big and delicious. The staff was very helpful, and the son speaks English, which is very helpful. They helped us book our tours, and the mini-buses were always right on time. The "chicken bus" to the entrance of Monteverde sits right in front of the hotel (and only costs $1 each way.) The hotel is very close to the grocery store, and the main street with all the shops and restaurants. Santa Elena is very charming, especially when it's not pouring. My only complaint is the shower, as the warmth was affected by the water pressue (the more hot water, the less pressure).

  • Liked — the comfy bed in the nice room, with the great breakfast
  • Disliked — shower
