“The most helpful hostel owners ever”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2009

This hostel is fairly basic, but clean and well located and there is a kitchen which comes in handy. But the main reason to stay here is because of the owners, who were so helpful in booking tours and an onwards bus ticket to Nicaragua, as well as telling us what activities we could do on our own without having to take an expensive tour.

If you get the bus to Santa Elena, Marlenny, the friendly owner, will probably be there when you get off the bus.

We´re not normally persuaded to look at accomodation by being greeted in this fashion. However, Cabiñas El Pueblo was already one of our choices and with Marlenny´s cheerful demeanour at the bus stop, it just made our decision easier.

Our room was big, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was included and there was 3 computers to use free internet. However, what made our stay very enjoyable was the level of attention from the wonderful staff that work there.

The good news... If you're looking for hot showers [a must in Monteverde], laundry service [a must for backpackers as clothes do not dry naturally in Costa Rica], a central location, great customer service, [refundable] tour bookings, a resident sloth [who lived in the trees across the street] and free internet access all at a very affordable price, the Cabanas El Pueblo are a great choice.
One day I was suffering from food poisoning (due to my fault...) and then came down with a cold (make sure to bring a water-proof or at least resistant shell for the cloudforests!) and the owner offered the massage services of his sister for free! It was a genuine offer for a friendly traveler [if I do say so myself!] for which I paid, being the grateful traveler I am...
The breakfast option consists of coffee, tea, cereal, and bananas and are self-serve in a well stocked kitchen.

Now a few comments about our Central American trip...My wife and I just returned from 5 weeks in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. While in Costa Rica we had to check out the area known as Monteverde, the centre of which is Santa Elena from where most people push off for the Santa Elena or Monteverde Cloudforest Reserves. Getting there is a challenge with a long bumpy ride on the bus which goes once or twice a day, or taking a 4x4 taxi from the Pan-America highway, for which one would pay $40 for two people.
Being the continental divide, the assortment of flora and fauna is incredibly diverse. Sadly, like many parts of the world tauted to be a 'nature-lover's paradise', the increase in popularity of Monteverde has not been accompanied by equal parts of conservationist efforts. There are abundant pesticides used for coffee and bananas on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica which the tradewinds sweep over the mountains and are affecting frogs, and other wildlife subject to the fallout. Statistics also show that very little of Costa Rica's waste water is treated and hence the 'eco-tourism' concept which so many think they are engaging in has to be taken with a good dose of salt...
We did enjoy the night tour and a self-guided tour of the cloudforest reserves but we found the frog pond, serpent and butterfly worlds, and orchid garden found close to the town of Santa Elena to have the same offerings as many zoos in the world and would be best appreciated by children under 10. Their strong point? They were of the very few places to have recycling facilities.
We also visited the volcanoes of Ometepe in Nicaragua during our trip which was a lot closer to the unspoiled magical place we had expected from Monteverde. We stayed at a [budget] ranch, or 'finca', a 24-family co-operative, called Finca Magdalena which was one of the highlights of our 5 week trip. Although we would not recommend Nicaragua for those traveling with kids or those who can not speak a word of Spanish, we would recommend some time in Nicaragua [as long as you avoid Managua and cross the borders during daylight hours].

  • Liked — central, friendly, and very affordable
  • Disliked — they don't treat their wastewater
