“Great for what it is, a backpackers stop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 28, 2012

We chose this as a one night stop to allow us to visit the cloud forest. The property is nothing special, it is small and quite dated. There are the basics, a room, connected bath and a bed. There isn't any furniture or closet but again this is a backpacker's stop. The bed was decent. The bathroom although very sparse was very clean as was the entire property and there was plenty of hot water. The WIFI was workable and the staff was friendly and helpful. Staying at a backpackers hostel just adds to the fun of the trip....as you meet the most interesting people.

This was stop #2 out of 4 places my family of 3 stayed while in Costa Rica. I wanted to show my son different types of places people stay in vacation. I wanted him to know everyplace wasn't a resort. We did some back and forth emails with Alonso, and he assured me he'd save is a private room, with 3 beds, and a private bath.

I double checked the week before and he assured me 'no problem'. We arrived and were so happy with the place. We met a lovely woman from New Zealand, and other travelers. Our room was clean, the bed was actually really nice, clean, and firm. The bathroom was, well, not resort standards, but we did only pay $45 a night, including breakfast!

We stayed there for 2 nights which was perfect. We bought some fresh food at the Market very close to the hostel and cooked in the small kitchen. It was a nice break from going out to eat 3 times a day.

This place isn't the Ritz... it isn't even a Holiday Inn express :). It's a HOSTEL! :)... go for the experience, if you can handle it. We felt safe, we liked meeting other warm hearted people. I do think, if you're a solo person, it's only $10 a night, but than again you are in a room with other people... Again, it's an experience.

We had such a good time here. When we left, the Host Alonso needed a ride to Jaco, and we were headed that way and we took him. We learned much about Costa Rica and the lovely people there.

All in all, convenient, affordable, clean... I got what I expected!

we had a private room with private bath, it was fine, no frills just a bed. The hosts are very knowledgeable and friendly, and really keep an eye on the place. We felt very safe. The included breakfast was great, bread, fruits, cookies. I would recommend cooking a few meals in their kitchen as the restaurants in town are overpriced and nothing to write home about. There is a nice secluded parking area right behind the building.

As a side note, don't waste your time and money at the official Cloud Preserve, it's just walking paths where u dont see anything except maybe some birds. The suspension bridge is weak, as in lame. the water fall is tiny. Go with one of the other outfitters that does ziplines and stuff.

I read up and knew that Monteverde Backpackers was going to be 'modest.' All the same, our room for only 2 did have it's own bathroom and was comfortable. Carlos was GREAT he recommended Extremo zip line canopy tour as well as a night walk tour and both were a blast, especially Extremo! Carlos was very friendly and just so on top of making sure the guests were all booked up for our excursions and comfortable at the hostel. The stay also included a nice fruit/coffee breakfast each day. We stayed 2 nights in April 2011 and were very happy with Monteverde Backpackers! :) Carlos needs a raise, he 'made' our visit to Monteverde!!!

We booked this place as it is a sister hostel of Arenal Backpackers in La Fortuna. Sadly it is nowhere near the same standard and not similar at all in style/atmosphere.

We only stayed here for one night and didn't spend much in our room as we were out and about doing trips. It's a good location but that's about it really. Our room was like a wooden cupboard in the loft and was SOOO noisy we could hear every word of conversation from the room below and next door and the traffic from the road (mainly very noisy motorcross bikes).

The guy on the desk was helpful enough with booking tours etc. but we were a bit disappointed as it said the breakfast they lay on starts at 6am but we booked a transfer that left at 6.30am and went away hungry as he didn't turn up until just as we left.

We definitely wouldn't recommend this place. There must be better places to stay in Monteverde and we certainly stayed in much better hostels for a similar price in Costa Rica.

This is a small hostel that is clean, connected and convenient. The hostel itself is about 2 min walk away from a supermarket and 1 more to the main street of Santa Elena. The manager Juan Carlos provides a great deal of information on activities around Monteverde, as well as connections to other areas. He goes out of his way to make your stay in Monteverde as pleasurable as possible. Its is a beautiful area.

Pros: staff, room, showers, location, value
Cons: a bit noisy at night

I read the other reviews and can say I had no problems with bugs. I stayed there in October during the rainy season and it was coming down hard when I arrived at night. It was one of the first hostels I came to and was content with what I found. The location is great if you are in town for a short time. The rooms are on the smaller side but I am a small guy so that was no problem. The bathroom had blasting hot water which was well needed. The sitting area was not the best as it was taken up by the staff/owner watching sports the entire time I was there.

Coffee was available in the morning.
