“Top notch destination resort on Nicoya Peninsula”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2014

We had spent a week in a different area on Nicoya Peninsula enjoying the wonderful beaches, and rustic settings. Tango Mar sent a comfortable car to pick us up and bring us to their hotel (comfortable is important here due to the horrible road conditions everywhere). Coming into the ally leading down to Tango Mar and finally arrive was like arriving at Shangri-La (I imagine). Beautiful location on the beach, lovely gardens and a warm welcome with fruit juices and cold napkins after the drive, then sitting in the open lobby just relaxing while we waited for a ride to our "tropical suite" at the top of the hill. Room is well appointed with jacuzzi, a canopy covered bed and many nice touches throughout. The group of rooms at the top share a smaller pool as well. We walked down the many steps to the main pool with a swim-up bar, nice lunch restaurant and steps down to the beach. The surf was very strong when we were there so it was nice to have the pool. Dinner in the main building was very nice, good food and good service in an open air restaurant. The owner, Hilde, came by to chat for a bit, very nice touch. As I am a little uneasy about snakes in the dark, we got a ride up the hill in one of the golf carts on the return after dinner (were told not to worry about snakes, but I still do). Earlier, we enjoyed the walk over to the look-out point, even though it was a bit hard to find the entry and there was a somewhat scary aerial bridge in less than good repair to cross. The views were all worth the hike though! I would not have picked the tropical suites rooms had I known what a hike it was to get up and down on steep winding steps through vegetation, so if you have achy knees, book the beach front properties. (Our friends had a beach front room with an easy walk on level grounds to and from the lobby/restaurant area.) Breakfast in the morning was great, with a varied buffet and eggs made to taste. They provided car service to the airport as well (at a reasonable cost). It's a very well maintained property in all aspects from what I could tell, with professional and friendly staff throughout. Not necessarily for the young party crowd, but I would recommend it for a romantic hideaway vacation, or in our case, to relax together with a couple of dear old friends in beautiful surroundings.

Room Tip: Even though they offer a ride up/down the hill, if you have difficulty walking up or down steps, boo...

This is a great resort with plenty of amenities and a relaxing atmosphere. It has a quaint little 9 hole golf course that is fun and can be played quickly since thre is very few players(at least while we were there). The food is excellent, the pools refreshing and the views are outstanding. The rooms were very comfortable and offer a relaxing venue for all.

Room Tip: If you don't mind walking, stay in the rooms that overlook the hotel. The monkeys inhabit the t...

This resort is simply paradise. Located on a beautiful secluded beach surrounded by lush greenery. Views of the ocean are simply amazing. Food is esquisite, buffet breakfast one of the best you'll find in the country! The owner Mrs Hilda is very friendly, always there to greet clients and have a nice chat. Staff is very polite and helpful. Spending the day on the beach, at the pool, lying in a hammock listening to the waves is so relaxing! There are a lot of strong waves hitting the beach, but once beyond the ocean is fine. Horse ride trip not recommended, unfriendly guide that doesn't know how to treat neither horses nor humans! For all the rest definitely a ten!

This place is a gem! The owner and gracious hostess, Hilde, has created a destination that is beautiful, relaxing, and friendly. We had a Tikki suite on the beach and close to reception and the restaurant. The room was large, gracious, very comfortable, and clean. We had a short walk to either the pool or the restaurant. The breakfast, which is included in the price, was quite varied and delicious. I especially loved the rice and beans and the fresh fruit while my husband loved the omelets which were prepared on request. The beach with the pounding surf is fantastic! We loved listening to it from our room. Most of all, we loved the staff. They are both friendly and quite accommodating. We especially enjoyed our time with Jessy, the resident naturalist, who on his own time graciously shared his knowledge about the birds of Costa Rica. He went out of his way to enlighten us on all things flora and fauna in Costa Rica. We also loved our time at meals with the fabulous waiters---especially Eduardo! Thank you all at Tango Mar. This is a week we will long remember. We will definitely return. Pura Vida!

Room Tip: Choose a room near the beach---either the hotel, tikkis, or villas----no real climbing needed to enj...

Just returned from our annual trip to Costa Rica. We always divide our trip between 2 hotels. This year we chose Tango Mar, as one of our hotels, and we were very pleased with the choice. The scenery at Tango Mar is nothing short of breathtaking! The pictures on the website do not begin to show how amazing this landscape, mixed with the warm turquoise waters of the golden sands beach really is, when experienced first hand. The lobby of the hotel is done in a tropical motif, under a huge palapa. The restaurant is just around the corner with views of the beautiful turquoise waters, and is nothing short of magical, especially at night. The buffet breakfast is included in the price of the room, and what a great breakfast it is. Most resorts only offer a continental breakfast included in the room price. The breakfast offered by Tango Mar is a full buffet breakfast of juices, coffee, tea, etc, a variety of fresh fruits, cereals, pastries, meats and cheeses, pancakes, waffles, eggs any way you want them, and an omelet station made to your order, with mushrooms, vegetables, cheese, the works! Anyone who has done any traveling knows this to be a great plus, when staying at any resort. We stayed in the beachfront rooms with air conditioning, cable tv, and wifi. Perfect! The room was immaculately clean and comfortable. We spent some time at the pool, which was sparkeling clean at all times, and the drinks at the pool bar, were the best I have ever tasted. The food at the restaurant was delicious, and very well priced, with a great menu. The staff just as wonderful, helpful and very efficient, especially Eduardo! It's difficult to find a resort in Costa Rica, with breathtaking scenery, spectacular beach with fine golden sand, gourmet food, and warm friendly service. TANGO MAR has it all. It rates right up their with, Caneel Bay, Little Dix Bay, and Cap Juluca in the Caribbean. Tango Mar is the "creme de la creme" of Costa Rica hands down! I would like to take this time to thank the owner of Tango Mar, Hilda, for taking charge and helping me with what could have been a disaster. We arrived at Tango Mar, with half of our party missing, including one of my sons. Their International flight had experienced problems and landed 2 hrs. late from it's designated time. They missed their Nature Air flight, the last that day, and were informed all flights were booked for the next few days, and there would be no way to secure seats for any future flights. When I arrived at Tango Mar, I was a wreck! Thank God for Hilda!!!!!!!! She immediately took charge! She called her driver, Marcus, had them picked up from the airport, taken to the ferry, and picked up from the ferry and driven to Tango Mar. This was not easy, as it was getting late, and they had to make the last ferry at 8 PM, in order to make it to Tango Mar that night. Everything went smoothly, thanks to Hilda! I cannot thank her enough. What a wonderful host! Also, I had read some negative reviews on Trip Advisor and was a little skeptical about the resort. These negative reviews could not be further from the truth. There are some people who are just complainers, and will complain about anything just to complain. DISREGARD THESE REVIEWS, as they are not valid! A review is always helpful, but in this case these reviews missed the mark. Go for yourself and you will see! We intend to return next year! We were fortunate to be there for the Tango Mar New Year's Eve Gala! Amazing buffett, live band, spectacular firework display, and flowered lays for the ladies and hats for the men. WE LOVE TANGO MAR AND WILL RETURN!

This is a luxury hotel in a remote part of the world. We stayed in an ocean front room with a view of the ocean second to none, and the wonderful pounding of the surf close by. Sunrises and sunsets are both spectacular. Room was large, clean, well appointed, and close to reception, the pool, and food.

The owner is outgoing, accessible, and checks with her guests in person!

Great gardens, grounds, and nice extra touches. Food is fantastic. All meals we experienced were well above average with great service and creative presentation.

Positives: Wonderful setting; friendly atmosphere; lots of things in the area to do; quiet.
Other observations: Hard to get to (the road coming in is narrow and unimproved).

I would stay here again if we return to the area.

This is a beautiful resort, but one beginning to show some signs of age. The resort is about 2 kilometers off the main road, down a bone-rattling rock road. The "Tropical Suites" are a set of four triplexes, comprising units 101, 102, 103, and 201, 202, 203, and 301, 302, 303, and 401, 402, 403. These suites were large and comfortable, with good baths and showers. One caution: they are located up on the bluff overlooking the beach, and while the view is good, it is a bit difficult to get down to the beach. A set of 92 steps, of rough concrete and poorly lit at night, gets you down to the level of the reception building, and then another set of 37 steps gets you down to the beach. Any guests with physical limitations would need to be taken down by golf cart. Internet connectivity was good but only in limited locations. The breakfast buffet was poor. Boxed orange juice. Stale cereal. Very limited ingredients for omelets. Artificial maple syrup. Dinners and lunches were much better. The beach is dark brown sand, and the dry parts get dangerously hot in the tropical sun. Foot protection is essential. The beach is relatively steep, with rough surf and weak rip currents. Children will need to be supervised. At high tide, almost the entire beach in awash in waves. Some of the front desk staff were unusually difficult, and made even simple requests a struggle. For example, reservations at other restaurants, off the resort, were messed up.
