“Heaven= Tango Mar”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

Just returned from our annual trip to Costa Rica. We always divide our trip between 2 hotels. This year we chose Tango Mar, as one of our hotels, and we were very pleased with the choice. The scenery at Tango Mar is nothing short of breathtaking! The pictures on the website do not begin to show how amazing this landscape, mixed with the warm turquoise waters of the golden sands beach really is, when experienced first hand. The lobby of the hotel is done in a tropical motif, under a huge palapa. The restaurant is just around the corner with views of the beautiful turquoise waters, and is nothing short of magical, especially at night. The buffet breakfast is included in the price of the room, and what a great breakfast it is. Most resorts only offer a continental breakfast included in the room price. The breakfast offered by Tango Mar is a full buffet breakfast of juices, coffee, tea, etc, a variety of fresh fruits, cereals, pastries, meats and cheeses, pancakes, waffles, eggs any way you want them, and an omelet station made to your order, with mushrooms, vegetables, cheese, the works! Anyone who has done any traveling knows this to be a great plus, when staying at any resort. We stayed in the beachfront rooms with air conditioning, cable tv, and wifi. Perfect! The room was immaculately clean and comfortable. We spent some time at the pool, which was sparkeling clean at all times, and the drinks at the pool bar, were the best I have ever tasted. The food at the restaurant was delicious, and very well priced, with a great menu. The staff just as wonderful, helpful and very efficient, especially Eduardo! It's difficult to find a resort in Costa Rica, with breathtaking scenery, spectacular beach with fine golden sand, gourmet food, and warm friendly service. TANGO MAR has it all. It rates right up their with, Caneel Bay, Little Dix Bay, and Cap Juluca in the Caribbean. Tango Mar is the "creme de la creme" of Costa Rica hands down! I would like to take this time to thank the owner of Tango Mar, Hilda, for taking charge and helping me with what could have been a disaster. We arrived at Tango Mar, with half of our party missing, including one of my sons. Their International flight had experienced problems and landed 2 hrs. late from it's designated time. They missed their Nature Air flight, the last that day, and were informed all flights were booked for the next few days, and there would be no way to secure seats for any future flights. When I arrived at Tango Mar, I was a wreck! Thank God for Hilda!!!!!!!! She immediately took charge! She called her driver, Marcus, had them picked up from the airport, taken to the ferry, and picked up from the ferry and driven to Tango Mar. This was not easy, as it was getting late, and they had to make the last ferry at 8 PM, in order to make it to Tango Mar that night. Everything went smoothly, thanks to Hilda! I cannot thank her enough. What a wonderful host! Also, I had read some negative reviews on Trip Advisor and was a little skeptical about the resort. These negative reviews could not be further from the truth. There are some people who are just complainers, and will complain about anything just to complain. DISREGARD THESE REVIEWS, as they are not valid! A review is always helpful, but in this case these reviews missed the mark. Go for yourself and you will see! We intend to return next year! We were fortunate to be there for the Tango Mar New Year's Eve Gala! Amazing buffett, live band, spectacular firework display, and flowered lays for the ladies and hats for the men. WE LOVE TANGO MAR AND WILL RETURN!

This is a luxury hotel in a remote part of the world. We stayed in an ocean front room with a view of the ocean second to none, and the wonderful pounding of the surf close by. Sunrises and sunsets are both spectacular. Room was large, clean, well appointed, and close to reception, the pool, and food.

The owner is outgoing, accessible, and checks with her guests in person!

Great gardens, grounds, and nice extra touches. Food is fantastic. All meals we experienced were well above average with great service and creative presentation.

Positives: Wonderful setting; friendly atmosphere; lots of things in the area to do; quiet.
Other observations: Hard to get to (the road coming in is narrow and unimproved).

I would stay here again if we return to the area.

This is a beautiful resort, but one beginning to show some signs of age. The resort is about 2 kilometers off the main road, down a bone-rattling rock road. The "Tropical Suites" are a set of four triplexes, comprising units 101, 102, 103, and 201, 202, 203, and 301, 302, 303, and 401, 402, 403. These suites were large and comfortable, with good baths and showers. One caution: they are located up on the bluff overlooking the beach, and while the view is good, it is a bit difficult to get down to the beach. A set of 92 steps, of rough concrete and poorly lit at night, gets you down to the level of the reception building, and then another set of 37 steps gets you down to the beach. Any guests with physical limitations would need to be taken down by golf cart. Internet connectivity was good but only in limited locations. The breakfast buffet was poor. Boxed orange juice. Stale cereal. Very limited ingredients for omelets. Artificial maple syrup. Dinners and lunches were much better. The beach is dark brown sand, and the dry parts get dangerously hot in the tropical sun. Foot protection is essential. The beach is relatively steep, with rough surf and weak rip currents. Children will need to be supervised. At high tide, almost the entire beach in awash in waves. Some of the front desk staff were unusually difficult, and made even simple requests a struggle. For example, reservations at other restaurants, off the resort, were messed up.

A very beautiful resort nestled in a tropical and luxuriant garden facing the Pacific ocean, that's what you will see when arriving via the little path starting from the main road!
You will be directly and warmly welcomed by Hilde (coming from Belgium) the owner of this very nice hotel.
This small place of paradise will offer you about 50 rooms with a max capacity of 120 people, your stay will be far away from huge resorts!
On site, main restaurant for breakfast and diner and pool restaurant for lunch, both facing the Pacific Ocean, the terrace of the main restaurant overlooking the ocean is really amazing (reservation requested)
Our room (tropical suite) was located higher than the lobby and it took only 2' by stairs to go up ( little exercice-:))
As we were 3 couples, we shared one bungalow with 3 rooms with a small pool within only 5 meters from our room! Very pleasant!
Our 3 nights stay was above our expectations, everything was perdect as well as the attention of hilde who took good care of us as she does with everyone!
Temperature of the ocean was round 30°C and we had the same temperature in the pools even more for the main pool! Unbelievable!
If you want practice some sport, you will find tennis courts, golf 9 holes, horse riding, snorkeling, etc....
No time for us to explore the surroundings but Tortuguero island seemed to be a good place to spend a day (maybe for the next time)
So, a wonderful place, still wild, a wonderful welcome, a very good food, so, what else?
Thanks hilde (and Antoon) for this moment

Got to Tango Mar on July 1, 2013. when we arrived we were greeted with drinks and cool wash rags since it was humid. they took our bags to our room so we could enjoy our drinks. there was only a few other couples at the resort during the 5 nights 6 days that we stayed. we stayed in the tropical suit. the room was very nice with a canopy bed with the jacuzzi tub right beside it. a large walk in shower. i would not recommend these rooms if you do not like to walk up stairs or cannot do so. there are many stairs that will have your legs burning by the time you get to the top or you can talk up the trail. i would stay in one of the lower rooms if i went back. also the bed was very very hard which made my wife's back and mine hurt and made it hard to sleep. we chose this resort because it was so secluded. both of the restaurants were good, we tried almost every drink on the menu and they were all very good. the banana split was amazing. most of the food was good. we recommend the seafood rice. we even had our food and drinks delivered to the room. the pools are very nice, we laid out by the pool and looked at the ocean we also laid on the hammocks on the beach. the staff are very friendly and are very helpful. the owner (Hilde Cloet) was also out and she would talk with the guests and was very friendly. the entire resort is very beautiful, we had monkeys in the trees behind our room, there are lizards and crabs everywhere which do not bother you. we hiked to the water fall and to the look out point which had amazing views of the Pacific ocean. be sure to take water when hiking because its very humid outside and you will be sweating a lot. it rained almost every day too but it was over quickly. i tried swimming in the water but it was too rough and the waves were to big, i was stung by a jelly fish and a wave tumbled me back onto the beach. my wife was not a strong enough swimmer to even try to get in the water. we went snorkeling off Tortuga Island which the snorkeling was not good. there was no coral reef, just rocks in the water. there were many fish and i saw an eel and a few star fish. the current was quite strong so if your not a decant swimmer i would recommend were a life vest. the boating staff was very friendly. we then went to Tortuga Island and laid on the white sand beach and swam in the water, again the water here is very strong so use caution while swimming here and also its hard to walk in the water because there is so much coral and shells, it hurts your feet. also you need money to use the bathroom, which i had forgot my wallet in the room. so my wife told the owner she was going to use the bathroom on the beach and they let us use the bathroom….lol. overall Tango Mar was excellent only complaint is the bed.

to start from the beginning it was an adventure for sure getting to and from Tango Mar. we flew into San Jose airport and were supposed to rent a car until we found out they wanted $1000 us deposit since we were foreigners. which almost ended out trip before we started. the rental car salesmen said he could book us a bus to the fairy. the man in line behind us told us not to take the bus. so we ended up taking a taxi which cost about $200 us to the fairy, about $1 ea. us to get on the fairy and $40 us from the fairy to the resort. which took about 4 to 5 hours. the fairy ride had an amazing view of the sunset. don't eat the chicken they are selling outside the fairy. it is grilled on a stick and was very raw. the taxi drivers drove like they were going to kill us, it was raining and they drove on the mountain roads extremely fast. we left from Tango Mar and went to Liberia Airport. we went in a van and were on dirt mountain roads for hours that had huge rocks in the road, the ride made us sick.

Room Tip: stay in a lower level room if you don't want to walk up many stairs, which is hard on the legs

I went to Tango Mar as part of a tour, and we stayed there 3 nights. The best part of Tango Mar is the beach, and everything else is marginal.

The grounds are okay. While I didn't play golf, I saw several brown patches of grass on the course. I'm not sure about how well they maintain the golf course during the west coast's dry season.

The best aspect of Tango Mar is the beach on the Pacific Ocean. It's very scenic to watch the sunset, and the water was always warm though too dangerous to swim in.

The place was empty when I was there with the tour group. There's a very nice swimming pool with a bar overlooking the ocean. Usually I was the only person in the pool, and the bar was never open for the duration of our stay.

All of the rooms have a beach view. My room was clean. I wasn't crazy about the split level floor plan. The bathroom and entrance is one level and you have to go down a set of 2 steps to get the bedroom and tv area. That got annoying pretty quickly. I had ants every night, and I mentioned it several times to the staff.

The dining area is nice in that it's all open, and you get a good view of the beach. All of the food was good, and the breakfast buffet was excellent.
