A lovely and quiet spot on the edge of the ocean, close to Galle for those who want an urban experience. The hotel is small and intimate, delicious food is served by courteous staff and our room was large, comfortable and immaculately clean. We would definitely return.

We ended our two-week visit to Sri Lanka with a four-night stay at The Frangipani Tree located in the town of Thalpe, which is about 15 minutes by tuk tuk from Galle Fort. Staying here is the perfect ending to an eventful trip, allowing us to lie back and enjoy the postcard-perfect surroundings. Time stands still in this slice of paradise. The 9-room boutique resort occupies a small plot of land bordering the edge of the beach, making it feel like an exclusive, almost private resort. Most other guests are couples who, like us, spent most of the day lounging by the pool. Unfortunately, the ocean at the resort is not suitable for swimming as the surf is rough, so the ocean was heard more than seen. At first, we were disappointed by the unsuitable beach but the charms of the resort were slowly made apparent to us over our relaxing stay. Our room, Olive Ridley Upstairs 1, offers a great view of the ocean. The bathroom, in particular, is something special—large windows opened up to views of rolling waves and the occasional stilt fishermen. The room, while spacious is quite basic but by no means uncomfortable. There are plenty of sitting areas to take in picturesque views (plus a sunrise view to the east). One of the highlights of our stay is the food. Whether it was lobster curry or western-influenced seared tuna, every dish was delicious. The staff were really accommodating in taking our requests for local dishes too. We had no qualms about having every meal at the resort (the prices are reasonable), and looked forward to meal times. Order the Sri Lankan breakfast the night before—you will get a platter of mouthwatering roti, hoppers and string hoppers with prawn or fish curry. Perhaps the best thing about Frangipani Tree is the abundant wildlife we were able to observe from the comfort of our deckchairs. Thanks to a local who was hanging out by the beach, we were told about the sea turtles 2 metres from the shoreline sticking out their heads for air. There is also a resident kingfisher, a sandpiper, a monitor lizard and a family of squirrels. And for 6 months out of the year, you get to witness a natural phenomenon where thousands of swallows come to roost on the property’s coconut trees. We were told that the birds have been coming here for the past 25 years. We got so accustomed to the languid pace of life and the abundance of natural beauty of the place that we were extremely sad to leave!

Not an ordinary hotel experience! A beautiful private space right next to the beach, sounds of the waves just metres away. Spacious, high-ceilinged rooms, thoughtfully furnished and serviced. The food is top notch - and served when you want, in your own private space outside your room. Sanjeeva and the rest of the staff provide you with truly excellent service, always friendly and polite, never intrusive. Everything is thought out to give you a carefree, luxurious experience.
I would heartily recommend the Frangipani Tree for couples and anybody wanting a bit of luxury by the beach, tucked away from the main tourist spots, but with great places to go just a short tuk-tuk ride away.

Room Tip: Olive RIdley room (ground floor) is on the end of the building, making it feel more private like a s...

This beautiful gem on a lovely quiet beach on the south coast is a great place to stay. Rooms are large, high quality linens, with a huge outdoor bathroom and a great patio space for cocktails and watching the sunset over the ocean. Food and service is probably some of the best on the coast. Chef is talented using all local fresh ingredients (SEAFOOD!!) and staff is exceptional at taking care of your needs. The pool is as incredible to look at as it is to swim in with an infinity view framed in palms and Frangipani straight out to the ocean. Great sunrise and sunset walks on the beach. Wonderful place to stay in all aspects!

Room Tip: Hawksbill 1 on the end is quiet and more private.

A great boutique hotel run by a strong management team. Others have commented about the concrete construction, outside bathrooms and lack of tea/coffee facilities in the room so I’ll stick to how we felt during our stay. Justyna and Wojtek made us feel very welcome from the minute we arrived. The staff were ever present without being overwhelming. The kitchen produced excellent food and our dinner on the last night was specially prepared by the chef. In fact the staff is always keen to take orders earlier in the day to allow the chef to properly prepare the food and develop flavors. Take them up on the offer.

This hotel will be at the top of our list when we return to Sri-Lanka. So much nicer and more personal than a 200 room hotel plagued by tour buses irrespective of the brand or name,

We ended a two week tour of Sri Lanka at this lovely hotel. The atmosphere is welcoming and very relaxed. The rooms are light, clean and airy and the whole place has a very homely feel.

The outside bathroom was great. Very romantic. The only problem was mosquitos if I chose to soak in the tub after sun down - perhaps I just needed to take a Gin and Tonic in with me!

The food was absolutely delicious - although note there is no wine on the menu - just beer and spirits. And surprisingly no tea and coffee facilities in the rooms, which means you need to ask each time you want a cup of tea (for us, many times a day!) However, the staff are excellent - very helpful and happy to organise packed lunched, breakfasts etc. as well as keep you topped up with tea.

It's a shame you can't swim in the sea here, but it's nice to have the sand and waves at the end of the beautiful pool.

You could spend days relaxing here, eating, drinking and reading, but the joy of this hotel is that you can also visit the lively city of Galle, which is just a short TukTuk ride away. Here there are lovely bars, restaurants and shopping, all set in a beautiful colonial town - we thoroughly enjoyed this, as we found there was nowhere else in Sri Lanka that this was really possible.

Anyway, a fabulous place. I would definitely stay here again.

My husband and I stayed at the Frangipani Tree for two nights during our recent trip to Sri Lanka. It was absolutely beautiful and just what we were hoping for. We arrived late afternoon after a long day, and were greeted warmly by the lovely managers. We were brought refreshing chilled juice and shown to our room (Olive Ridley first floor). It was amazing, better than I had imagined - I had spent ages agonising about which room to book beforehand, and I chose well! The room has huge windows on all 3 sides with uninterrupted views of the sea, beautifully framed by palm trees. The view from the shower was particularly unforgettable! The 4 poster bed was comfy, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves was heaven. We had dinner one night and the food was wonderful (try the lobster), and the chef packed us a takeaway breakfast the next morning as we had to set off at 5am for whale watching. The hotel is wonderfully situated on a small beach, close by tuktuk to Unatawuna beach, and half an hour's drive from Marissa, and we also went to Jungle beach nearby which was fun and off the beaten track. We would recommend this hotel for anyone looking for peace and relaxation in natural surroundings with a contemporary edge. I only wish we'd been able to stay for longer!
