I wil not recoment Peacock to annyone. Its location on the beach is beautiful. But extremely noisy and the open air club next to it keeps the music going until morningtime. Do not expect to sleep at night. Its not clean either. My bathroom and bedlinnen where probably not washed before arrival.

We stayed 4 nights there in March 2009. For a nice clean double room with A/C they wanted 2900r. Really we paid 2600r a night. We think the hotel has the best location in Unawatuna. It was e[tremely pleasant to go to sleep hearing the ocean. All the room including the bathroom was newly redecorated exept the ceiling. We did not like the restaurant: high prices, slow service, but it wasn't a problem. There are a lot of nice restaurants on the beach with great seafood.

I stayed at the Peacock simply because it was where the taxi dropped me and it was the first place listed as 'budget' in the Lonely Planet Guide.
The room was very basic, but the sea view and beach location was great. However, the room seemed expensive given that ,officially, May is out of season. (There was hardly any tourists around) The food was very average, but the waiters were very friendly and helpful. On the other hand, the owners seemed very pushy and acted offended if I went elswhere for food.
A few evenings after I arrived I went to dinner with another traveller who was staying at the peacock. I left the resaurant before her, but when I got back to the Peacock her room light was on. The owner came to talk with me and when I went to my room, my friends light was off. I assumed that she had returned.
My door was locked, it was late and I went straight to bed.
First thing the next morning I noticed that my backpack had been rifled through - my paperwork was all over and my digital camera was missing.
I met my friend returning to her room, which was also locked, only to discover that her things had been gone through and that she had had money stolen. She had not been in the room when the light was on.
We reported this to the owner. He became angry and we said that we were leaving. He tried to charge us for an extra night, but we refused, paid ourbill and moved on.
The next place that we stayed at was half the price, still on the beach and the rooms were far superior to those at the Peacock.
I reported the theft of my camera to the police (I later discovered that my walking shoes had also been stolen) Subsequently we heard many reports of things having been stolen from rooms at the Peacock.
I can not be sure who took my camera, but I did conclude that whoever it was must have had access to a key.
As such, I feel that I must warn fellow travellers not to leave valuables (inc passports etc) in your room, that is if you choose to stay there at all. I certainly will not be returning.

The room and location were great - right on the beach - the room was located on the second floor and was the largest and nicest of all the rooms on offer - the other rooms appeared quite small and not that nice. The breakfast was the worst that we had in the whole time we were in Sri Lanka - so we decided to avoid eating there again which seemed to cause a little offense to the owners... therefore we moved on after 3 days again the owner was abit annoyed that we were leaving and made us feel a little uncomfortable!

we had considered staying at the Peacock, sooooooooooo glad we didn't. We stopped off on our first day in Unawatuna (13 jan 08) for a drink and to check the menu....we sat at a beach table, absolutley gorg views over the bay. The problem came when a storm came and we had to move inside....yuck you have never seen so many flies in your life!! they were everywhere....mainly seeming to emit from the small hatch that appeared to be the kitchen....so horrible were they we ended up leaving and walking back to our hotel in the terrantial rain sooner than stay with the flies. We never went again!!

Booked and paid for a top floor, air conditioned, sea view room at this hotel through golanka.com 6 months before arrival. Upon arrival at the hotel (during the Sri Lanka v England Test Match) the owners tried to put us in a disgusting hovel of a room with only a ceiling fan & mosquito blood stained net around the bed with only partial sea view on first floor. As they knew that rooms were hard to come by while the cricket was on they wanted an extra $30 a night for the room we had actually booked and paid for way in advance! Would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy.... disgusting! Owners were crooks! The female owner was arrogant and rude... her husband admitted to me that we had paid for the A/c top floor room but was too scared of his wife to speak up!!!! Had to get on the phone to Unawatuna beach hotel who were more than helpful.... treated like kings upon arrival at Unawatuna Beach Hotel.....
