Ended up here on recommendation from our hotel in Kandy....really lucked out. All they had left was a bungalow/suite and we weren't sure if we wanted to spend as much. So thankful that we did. The room was just fantastic - huge and bright with indoor/outdoor space. Couldn't have been more pleased. Location is fantastic as well.

First of all: the hotel is located in a beautiful tropical garden and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is delicious as probably the best available in Unawatuna.

It was the fourth time we travelled to Sri Lanka. The owner is very nice but when it come to the final bill, she just ignores previous arrangements (this happened to us and other guests so I feel compelled to write something here). We agreed on a price (incl. tax and service and breakfast) before by telephon and in writing but when it came to the final billing she just added 10% service plus the breakfast (at a "discount" of 6 instead of 8 dollars). We tried to clarify this with her (we are well travelled and don't argue about 5 dollars but it was a matter of principle) but she just ignored our arguements, probably knowing that people on holiday don't like to argue. For the sake of peace we ended up paying and leaving earlier than planned.

The room itself are quite damp and mosquitoes can be a problem. Location is great.

We've stayed four nights in this beautiful guesthouse. A colonial style home with a limited number of rooms located in a romantic garden, only 50m from the beach. There are plenty of restaurants right accross the road. The staff is excellent, and even though there's no airconditioning the ceiling fans make rooms and verandas comfortable at any time during the day. The rooms are spread out across the house, adding to the friendly atmosphere. The guesthouse has massage and yoga facilities on site. The old fort of Galle can be reached by tuktuk in 10-15 minutes.

Been here a couple of times so far, and couldn't have asked for a better place to relax and enjoy the unawatuna beach scene. Rooms are comfortable and airy, the open air showers a definite plus point. My favourite part is probably the large white meditation dome in the garden, perfect for a session of yoga or one of the musical rehearsals frequently hosted here. Meals are prepared at the villa, and the back garden provides access to Jungle Beach, an untouched stretch of beautiful beach just a short walk away.. I would go back here anytime I get a chance!

My two nights and three days at Secret Garden are some of my most enjoyable. We were kindly greeted by the staff on arrival and escorted to our lovely rooms with antique colonial four poster beds. The bathroom was especially striking with a lovely modern fusion design that included a stately dresser. Although mosquitos are endemic to Unawatuna; however, under the bednets I slept soundly.

Breakfast at Secret Garden is an experience of its own; luscious fruit was provided with toast and coconut water. After that we had a yoga session in the meditation dome; the trainer was very professional and after the yoga session we had a great time making music. The staff were most helpful in advising us locations of interest and assisted us in procuring transportation at a very decent price.

On returning one evening we were greeted by Mr. Wickramasinghe, the security guard. His anecdotes of the colonial era, his nursery rhymes, wise sayings and his log book (where he signs down every 15 mins and records everything around him) provided us with no end of amusement to accompany our porto.

In essence, an excellent stay in a leafy paradise beside the beach.

my girlfriend and I spent one week in this relaxing guesthouse in the center of unawatuna....the place suited us completely, since it is located right next to the beach and all the unawatuna restaurants/bars...at the same time, its garden and atmosphere allows you to sit back from the busy beach and relax as much as you want....we are not much into yoga, but place offers the perfect setting for it in the dome....
a minus for secret garden are mosquitoes (although there are mosquito nets on beds), but i guess this is the same for every place in the area..
funny to read all those comments about the "crazy owner"...my girlfriend and I got really along with her and we spent a few nights hearing her stories about unawatuna..

The villa is a beautiful property located in a cute village with a very ancient history. It's the little details about this place that really attracted me. The colorful decor, the fresh flowers all around the property, the unique design. The place gave me a very comfortable and homey feeling. There is also a really cool meditation dome which is perfect for yoga. The villa is a hop from the beach which is alive and breath taking. There are several restaurants on the beach so you can enjoy a fresh meal after swimming. There is also a temple on the beach as well that is worth a visit. Secret Garden rests at the foot of the Rumassala mountain, which according to ancient Indian mythology is a small fragment of the Himalayan mountains. If you are traveling to Sri Lanka you have to visit Galle and Unwatuna bay and stay at Secret Garden.
