I don't often write reviews but on this occasion the staff at Sun n sea were so fantastically attentive I thought I'd make an exception (plus their aubergine curry was one of the tastiest I've tried during my two months travelling around Sri Lanka, which is saying something).
Our waiter Chataranga has the kind of permanent smile that lights up a room and Mal the hotel manager took time to pop over between each course to check everything was ok. Throwing in a complimentary desert of creme brûlée and an assortment of traditional Sri Lankan sweets was a nice touch and the perfect end to the meal.
The bar upstairs comes complete with it's own pizza oven which I'll definitely be trying before I leave Unawatuna - experienced a touch of food envy watching other diners tuck into their wood fired pizzas.
Very impressed to see the owners are all about local when it comes to their food - painted on the wall is a comprehensive list of ingredients and distances they're sourced from, my favourite being 'sea salt: 0.0 miles'. Every few weeks one of the guys swims out armed with a bucket to fetch salt before it's dried out on a baking tray... doesn't get better than that. Chatting to the staff, we found most of what they need comes from local growers and the chefs take time to visit the producers in person - explains why everything tastes so fresh.
If locally sourced quality food isn't enough to tempt you than the stunning views across the ocean will be... dining at Sun n sea makes is a thoroughly enjoyable experience - this place is definitely well worth a visit!
