“Calm, clean and great staff.”
Reviewed February 24, 2014

We spent five nights at Thaproban Pavilion Resort and Spa, and we felt looked after from the very first moments! The hotel itself looks good, colourful and carefully designed. The staff is consistently helpful and pleasant, breakfast is plentiful and tasty, and the view is wonderful from the top floor rooms. We had a great time! If you can grab yourself an ayurvedic massage too, delightful!

Room Tip: Choose the top floors, the view is worth it!

First if all thank you to management and staff for making our stay so enjoyable. We stayed 3 nights in an Ocean Pavillion room and 2 nights in a room on the top floor in the main building (ocean rooms were sold out).
The resort has an excellent and quiet location with fantastic sea view and only 10 minutes easy walk from Unawatuna village.
The (minor) technical problems we encountered in our room were adressed by the very service oriented staff immediately. Also both the breakfast restaurant (inside) and the dinner restaurant ( outside) offered very good service and good food. When we return to Unawatuna, we will for sure stay here again.

What a find! Had to move here from an awful place in Unawatuna, they found us room and accommodated us with open arms. The staff were helpful, friendly and nothing too much trouble. We stayed in the front top rooms in my view the best rooms in the house, great view and fab spot steps away from a lovely pool. Food was great and the spa which is at the top of the house lovely and my treatment was excellent. Just far enough from the hustle and bustle of Unawatuna, a great find. Definitely a family orientated hotel.

Room Tip: The top floor rooms above the pool are the best

We left this lovely hotel only a day ago, but already want to go back. The place we moved after (the chaaya tranz hotel in hakkaduwa) was such an unfortunate choice in comparison with Thaproban pavilion. In Thaproban you get this cosy and romantic atmosphere of a small boutique hotel. Friendly staff, nice design of rooms (but get ready, doors to the bathroom and toilet are not closing tightly -)). balcony with amazing ocean view. And it's great that it's not on the unawatuna beach - 10 minutes walking from it's hustle.
The only minus for me was breakfast. For 2-3 days it's ok, but after 6 days you already hate eggs -)
Pleeease, add at least some cheese to the menu. And it would be great to have it on the open terrace, with fresh air breeze, but not smell of frying pancakes.
But still, hotel management is doing great job and I hope that when once we go back Thaproban won't loose its charm.

We stayed here for the last night of our trip and enjoyed it very much. They have attempted to create a stylish boutique hotel and succeeded very well. The rooms are huge, the beds comfortable and the breakfasts good. We stayed in an Ocean View room on the first floor at the front, definitely worth considering for the view, but then again we also like the sound of surf pounding on the rocks. While it is set away from Unawatuna Beach, we found that to be a plus as the walk only took 10 minutes and was more than compensated for by the quiet location. By the way, if you do want to walk into town for dinner the road is reasonably well lit.

Position was great - nice and quiet, keeping you removed from the noise of the main beach of Unawatuna. The staff were friendly and engaging happy to cater for all our needs at any time. The massage spa was disappointing and the seafood menu available was expensive, but satisfying if you are prepared to spend the money.

Breakfasts are western only and a bit monotonous. Sri Lankan breakfasts are available but you have to request the prior day and they are a bit lacking in variety.

We spent many days lying next to the pool enjoying the tranquility and reading - very relaxing.

A fantastic hotel with a superb, quite location. In addition to its own sandy beach, the hotel has its own small private beach right next to the hotel with an equally small natural saltwater pool . Perfect if you want to chill out for yourself in the hammock. If you want to chill out even more, take a few steps out onto the rocks and lie in the small pools that are created when the tide rises and let the waves wash all over you .

Rooms are large (bigger than what the pictures show ) with a balcony (which also it is larger than what the pictures show ) that faces the Indian Ocean. There we spent many hours while the sun slowly descended into the ocean. Room service worked like a Swiss clockwork and cleanliness of the room was exemplary.

The breakfast menu was ample for our needs, however, it became a little monotonous after 14 days. But if you want something different, you can choose from a larger menu if you order the night before (which we did not because we were too lazy).

The hotel also serves fresh fish and seafood delicacies at the hotel's beach to the sound of pounding waves. A bit more expensive, however, than the exact same food down on unawatuna beach (you should definitely pay a visit to their sister hotel Thaproban Beach House for a cosy an delicious dinner).

Besides the amazing location on the cliff, the staff are this hotel's real USP. Good in English, service minded and very friendly. They were really keen that guests would feel at home. Which they certainly succeeded .

The hotel is also a perfect base to visit all the other awesome beaches in the surroundings. Jungle beach because it is so quiet and beautiful . Mirissa for its beauty. Wijaya because it has everything. Unawatuna for the nightlife.

On the minus side then. Actually nothing the hotel can do anything about, but as we all know, children like to go crazy while in a pool ... (yes, we travelled as a couple with no kids).
