“Lovely owners, great rooms”
Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in a big ground floor room in this lovely new hotel. No A/C unfortunately but decent fan and mozzie net, along with good shower. Lovely breakfast, with the best coffee we had in Sri Lanka. 5 mins from beach.

We arrived having changed our dates but the hotel was full ( we hadnt seen the mail that informed us that they were full ) yet the owners found us a place to say and were extremely attentive. The owners are Fantastic and will do all they can to help n your journey, with lots of local advice. Thank you Gayan and your girlfriend ( we dont know her name )

Room Tip: No pool but pond attracts lizards, birds, frogs and monkeys, great for kids

Amidst the craziness of Unawatuna, and just a few steps away from the the beach and its busy touristy scene lies this lovely and quiet new hotel, where Gayan -the owner- will welcome you with a warm smile and make sure that you feel at home in every moment. Enjoy a juicy papaya for breakfast, while a bunch of lazy monkeys play in the branches of the wide tree that dominates the hotel's garden, and fall asleep to the songs of the frogs that gather at night around its green little pond. The cozy beds and clean bathrooms; the showers that are open to the jungle...This place will make you feel like if you were suddenly inside an old tale from the times of colonial Ceylon.

But it definitely isn't this that makes it unique; it is the attention and care of Gayan and Jane, that really differenciates Dunes from the rest of hotels in Unawatuna. Once you are welcomed inside, you stop being a stranger to become a member of the family. And with all this being said, it is also probably the best value for money you will find across the beach. Without a doubt, my #1 place to stay in Unawatuna.

Me and my girlfriend had a three day stay in Dunes Unawatuna hotel in last May and it was a very pleasant experience. The host was very nice and so as the hotel. The hotel is situated in a very peaceful area close to the Unawatuna beach and it has a unique style. Food was made to order and was excellent. Highly recommended and hoping to stay again soon.

'Dunes' stand-out as a unique, tranquil space in the heart of the Unawatuna resort. You hardly realize that you are only a step away from the bustling, colorful streets and the inviting blue waters of the bay...and this is the unique appeal of this space. Its an oasis tucked away in the beach resort of Unawatuna. The owner Gayan and his partner Jenny ensure that your stay is comfortable and homely. Their hospitality is warm and sincere and you feel as if you are visiting with old time friends. Tastefully decorated cosy rooms overlooking a beautiful pond and garden coupled with friendly staff and delicious meals - completed our memorable stay.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think about our recent stay at Dunes is the food! Everything we ate at the Dunes was really really good. We loved the prawn curry with Sri Lankan yellow rice and the grilled fish that Gayan specially arranged for us. Our 1.5 year old daughter love her chicken and mushroom soup and ate it every day that we were there. Food aside, Dunes is a nice place to stay. We opted for the cottage, which was neat, clean and functional. The mattress were oh-so-comfortable and the bathroom was well designed in an open air rooftop setting which we loved. The whole place is designed in an Eco friendly manner and you would get the feel of it as soon as you settle in. Dunes is just a stones throw away from the beach and all it takes is a quick walk to the nearest beach shack. Gayan, the owner of the place is always around to help you with information or anything you may need. The courtyard has a cozy setting with a few tables where you can access wifi, read from a bunch of books kept there, or simply hang out with company. If we were to go back to Unawantuna in Sri Lanka, there's no question where we would stay :-)

We booked a downstairs room with fan there and we were very pleased with room and service. You can spot wildlife in the garden while having tasty breakfast and you can reach the beach within 2 minutes. The only negative aspect were some blood stains from killed mosqitoes on the bed sheets.
They opened this hotel 6 months ago, so the furniture and bathroom is all new. We can recommend this hotel and would definitely go there again. Peace and love!
