“Quiet place to crash in ok but >5* resort?. Not worth the room rate”
Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

After being visited many beach resorts around Sth East Asia and Asia inclusive 5 stars resorts in Sri Lanka. I have to say that Coco Bay resort as a standard 3-4 Stars resort.
The room design is exclusive 5 stars with seeing through window all the way to the beach when you having a shower or having a relaxing jacuzzi . However do watch out that there is always a pool cleaner or guard in front of your private beach view. So pls don't go fully natures as you can do with other private beach villa or resorts. Basically the room come with most necessity as a 4+ stars hotel do suchas kingside bed and double pillows, small 32" LED tv screen with CD player, partial filled minibar, safety box and so on but please remember to bring your own toothbrushes, shower gel...and so on amenities because all you get is a small bottle of shampoo, a small cut pallet of coconut, lavender or lemon grass when you check in. I did not bring all of those as I thought it is a 5 stars resort but to my surprising. Maybe I could bother to ask for it as I believe this kind of necessity should be there without the need to ask or beg for it.
We booked 1 out of 3 Aqua romantic unit on the 1st floor where we can have about 2m x1.5m small partition pool. It is ok for a good view from the room balcony and a soak in or to hop over to the beach side for sun tanning.
Services from the staff was generally friendly and polite but do prepared that they would always ask where you come from. I felt that although the level of conversation and services was friendly but It is not really from the heart as I have experiences with many other resorts. I don't feel it is from the heart but rather in Rps. It was just really a standard protocol that the staff has to behave like so but it is not from their souls to communicate with all different guest backgrounds and cultures. I felt that this place is purely suitable for guest from far abroad whom has minimum exposures to 5 star resources but personally I think it has to improve on certain areas to achieve that so called more than 5 stars Boutique Resort claim by the hotel manager. The Jazcuzzi it looks nice but please make sure to check have enough hot water before you jump in. We tried it for the first time and half filled of the spa tub, hot water ran out and became cold after that. So we has to abolish our spa plan. And make sure you prepare at least 1.5 hr before you jump in as the water filling is slow.
And in term of the beach view, I think it s just ok looking over the bay view but not as exclusive as some mentioned.

When check out please remember to ask for your changes if you pay cash because the cashier will assume that your small changes is for his tips.. Disappointing in term of honesty and transparent truly heart service. Well again maybe they asunmed that I came from Mainland China but actually I m not. Hence I asked for the changes and give it to the bell boy instead.

Hence overall I think it was ok and don't think I will be back there again. I would not recommend this to any of my friends either in term of the room rates with respective to so call > 5 stars boutique services.

We are sorry you had had a mixed experience at the COCO BAY. Your stay was for one night and we wish to clarify some of the points mentioned on your review.
Our intention is to give a great sea view from all vantage points of all the rooms. A stunning sea view is available from the bathroom , room and balcony and from the private pool in the case of aqua romance rooms. A splendid view of the ocean is of great value to all our guests and we did not want to compromise this by covering the beach front of the aqua romance rooms.
In addition to a pillow menu and a soap menu , shower gels , shampoo"s and body lotions are provided in designer packs and replenished twice a day.
A prominent notice is displayed in the folder requesting guests to contact the butler for any requirments. Being a boutique resort we strive to accede to any request and have so far met the expectations of our guests.
We have selected large jacuzzi"s to ensure comforts to our guests. When correctly filled , it takes 20 minutes to fill a jacuzzi. Not had problems with hot water and if you had brought this to our notice, we would have looked into this.
The biggest asset of the resort is our staff who have all been carefully selected and the reviews made by other guests speaks for itself.

This was a fantastic experience for our family. The location was exceptional with beaut waves suitable for the kids, an amazing chef and friendly and very helpful staff. This was by far the most exceptional overall accommodation we experienced in Sri Lanka. They simply could not do enough to accommodate us and if we returned to Sri Lanka this accommodation would be our first choice. We stayed in a Ocean Privilege suite which is a double sized room with huge balcony and fantastic view out over the bay. Overall this is a great place to stay with fantastic service. Keep up the great work Coco Bay and hope to see you again soon.

Room Tip: Ocean privilege suite was fantastic for a family

We stayed for two nights at the end of our honeymoon trip to sri lankd and this was a wonderful finale for our trip. We booked a last minute deal which was excellent value for money. Room was beutiful with jaccuzzi and private pool. Staff were incredibly nice and helpful. Water in the private beach were not the cleanest becuse it is close to the city of Galle and fishing area but pool is very nice and jungle beach which is beutiful is very close. Located half way between Galle and Unaeatuna a short tuk tuk ride away from both. During the day you can easily take the bus to eather one for a fraction of the cost. Food was very nice and they even packed me a doggy bag for my flight home. Highly reccomended.

We booked in march for our stay in September,, mostly on a leap of faith that all the positive reviews could be right - and they were!

This is a special place for those seeking peace and quiet, excellent service, really good
(and varied) food, and comfortable accommodations.

This is the most memorable resort I had stayed and if can i do not wish to share this secret place to anyone. This is a perfect place for those who want to relax and chill at the most efficient and practical but yet beautifully design located sea and beach facing few which is only a few steps away. This perfect boutique hotel should be rated 5 star even is officially 4 star as the has the best and most professional staff i have ever experience despite of me being in the hospitality industry for 15 years. Everyone is proactive and non pretentious which you rarely find any 5 star hotel around the world nowadays. I can't thank enough to all attentive staff especially Chef Samarji treated us like our personal chef with amazing succulent steak and curries with modern & fine dining touch at local price. Reny, Bishan, Mohammed had made our stay truly unforgettable - you guys are incomparable with any hotels including Cinnamon Colombo, I rather stay with you guys Cocobay anytime!!!! So I am looking forward to come back again :)....Without a doubt, Galle's best kept secret and all hoteliers should learn from Cocobay about the true of hospitality.

Room Tip: All rooms good but Ocean Privilege wins it all!!!!

I think this place is a real gem, and it's something that only becomes apparent after you stay there for a few days. It's close enough to Galle to easily sample it's sights and food in a short hop yet it still is a secluded little beach hideaway - note though that it's still a tuk-tuk drive in the other direction to Unawatana beach. The food is good and comes in big portions, the soap and pillow menus add a little luxurious touch to good quality rooms and the staff are friendly. Only sticky (or slippery) point that we found was the oily feel to the bedroom floorboards - I'm not sure what from but it is something mentioned before in other reviews. Still a winner for me though.

This was by far the highlight and best stay of our trip to Sri Lanka in early August.

The suites are very tastefully furnished and all of them have a view of the beach, the sea and in the distance Galle Fort. All of them also have a jacuzzi that looks out at the scenic view. The resort is located on a semi-private beach and the sunrise + sunsets are definitely something to look out for.

Reny (GM), Bishan (F&B Manager) and their teams offer one of the best examples of Sri Lankan hospitality I have experienced, after touring the central and western parts of the country. From the greeting by name when you arrive, to their sincerity in making sure you are enjoying your holiday ("Just tell us what you need, and we will settle it for you"), to the effort that the staff take to remember your breakfast order preferences, and even the proactive and friendly (but non-intrusive) questions when you return to the resort or tanning on the beach, this is a team that's clearly taken their training on hospitality to heart.

Try their BBQ menu if you have the chance to OR make sure your stay includes a Saturday, where that's the dinner menu on offer. The half-board option provides breakfast and a 4 course dinner that in my opinion, is more than worth the price. They also provide pretty good wines at decent prices.

This is definitely a place I would come back to again, just to unwind, chill and perhaps celebrate a birthday or anniversary.

CoCo Bay is also a pretty good location to use as a base if you are planning to visit Galle Fort, Sea Turtle Hatchery, Unawatuna Beach, Whale + Dolphin watching at Mirissa and if you aren't against a 3 hour drive one way, you can even leave in the morning for Yala National Park.

Galle Fort is a short 10 minute Tuk-tuk ride away; the front desk will call one for you. Prices range between 400 - 500rs one way. Negotiate with the driver to pick you up at the same location and you can be assured that the driver will remember the way back.

Room Tip: All the rooms have seaviews, splurge on the Aqua Romance Suites to get a private pool.
