“Excellent budget stay - clean rooms and wonderful owners”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Stayed here for a couple of nights after travelling around Sri Lanka for over a month. I must stay that I believe this is one of the best stays, if not the best, I had during my travels, mostly due to the friendly owners and the wonderful terrace where I enjoyed many calm nights overlooking the beach.

The rooms are simple and clean and perfect for the budget traveller in the otherwise quite expencive unawatuna. I stayed both in the single room, which is very small, and the double, a bit bigger, and I liked them both. The owners are very helpful and kind, for example I had lost my towel as well as my cutlery etc. that I needed for breakfast and they provided me with everything I needed.

Highly recommend it!

We've been coming to Unawatuna for years, so we've seen guest houses come and go. But Lucky (and his wife, Pemma) keep the same basic routine going. Pretty well the cheapest looking over the sea, five very basic net-and-fan rooms, attached cold shower etc.

The stars for us are the warm welcome we get from Lucky and Pemma - often tea is provided, and if you're lucky you'll get a bit of fruit as well. NOTE - they don't provide any meals. The other star is the balcony overlooking the bay (you can't see the beach because of the sea wall, built a few years back to keep the sand off the road). It's huge, shady, and shared by all guests, clothes drying area, tables to eat your own food on. Some people stay for literally months, so it's pot luck whether you get a room, but worth asking.

Be warned, it's not for party people - two of the rooms open on to the balcony, so late night drinking is firmly discouraged. But as a base to put your gear and hang out in what is still one of the best places to stay in Sri Lanka, it takes a lot of beating.

Room Tip: In the unlikely event that a room overlooking the balcony is available, they are the best.

This is the best place for the chilled out traveller on a budget. The couple who run it are two of the most honest, hard working people you will ever meet. Do not expect too much and the rewards that it has to offer are up to you to enjoy and find out. Be yourself, slow down and step back.

Rooms are simple, clean, moz netted and en-suite. the property is set back from the beach with a fantastic balcony with great views of the bay. If you are rowdy, boisterous or one of life's complainers then pay a bit more and stay somewhere else.
