“A Great Place To Eat”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

If you have just one meal in Unawatuna, go blind, go here.

The pastoral name is misleading - the waves virtually lap at your table as you eat. and what food! This is home cooking at it's very best. terrific devilled meats, fried swordfish and sweet and sours Sri Lankan style.

Lovely beaming mama at the counter, smiling service, and the joy shows in the cooking.

“Great Location, Great Food.”
Reviewed January 29, 2013

Enjoyed the Christmas eve night out at this restaurant. It was a very pleasant experience with the perfect view of the sea and fireworks at midnight (Christmas eve parties). The Food is priced reasonably and the flavor combinations are surprisingly good. Great location to just sit back and chill...

“Comfortable accommodation for budget stay”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Summer Garden is not only a sea food restaurant that serves up tasty large portions of "value for money food" but it also has 4-5 rooms above. The mixed sea food rice will feed 2 adults easily. The banana fritters and sea food pizza were great.

We stayed in the 1st room on the 2nd floor, away from Riddim, the club next door, so as not to be disturbed throughout the night. Even though there was a party on 31st night, we were hardly disturbed. The rooms are large, tiled, good air conditioning, clean linen and has a large tiled well lit toilet attached. On one side is the busy Galle Road, which you can drown out once the door is closed. On the other side it the sea. If you want dead silence, this is not the place. But if you can cope with a bit of noise, this place is a good budget stay.

The staff and owner (lady) are friendly and accommodating. The staircase and landing areas were not too clean, it had rained throughout to add to it.

The triple room cost US$55 or Rs.6500.

“Thumbs up for the family-like environment and the good fish”
Reviewed July 3, 2012

Unawatuna is still a good beach, when there are no tourists.
This restaurant is a simple, family-run business. No frills, but a very welcome and familiar environment. Menu has not changed in two years, smiles are still sincere, fish is fresh and tasty. The owner recognizes me (it's the third time in almost two years I step into here to dine). This is why I have choose it today between the tenth restaurants on the beach.
The restaurant is on a veranda, close to the sea, facing the whole Unawatuna crescent, sometime the high tide besieges it.
A dog is sleeping on the beach, cradled by the constant voice of the sea. A TV no one is really watching is on, croaking adverts.
My mix-fish platter lands on the table. It is never 'the same plate', they prepare it accordingly to the catch of the day . A soap of some kind has started on TV, the titles shows helicopters and high class guys. Suddenly the audience pops up from nowhere. Even the cook is there. My fish is great.
Starring: tempura prawns, sea-bass with a kind of caper/mediterranean taste on a bed of rice, calamari, fresh salad, russian salad, french fries (+ 1 extra while sipping the beer, waiting for the food), water, beer. Struggled to finish everything. About LKR 1,800 (=USD 15 = EU12)
The place also rents rooms upstairs, but did not inquired for.

Direction: right on the beach, one of the last restaurants east side of Unawatuna Bay.
