The whole family is very nice, specially the "Mama" is always smiling.. The cooking lessons, pratacally.. POOR. They doesn't even teach you how to prepare the basic SriLankan Curry, she tells you to buy it!!! Same for the fried chips (very hard to learn how to fry chips..)
Every other cooking lesson includes a visit to the market, this one doesn't..
The food was great, not to many dishes but nice. She promised she will send us the recipies par e-mail, after 3 month we are still waiting. We tried to ask her about, but.. no answer.
I strongly recommend going next door, much more professional.

Happy Spice is owned and run by a very enterprising young lady, Chintha. Her smile and wam personality will make you feel most welcome.

Then let's get to the food. It"s all cooked fresh every day with local, seasonal ingrediants. The fish cooked in Banana leaf a must as is the cracked rice with tropical fruits and curd and honey for breakfast.

Traditional rice and curry is a must with so many choices. Also try the Hoppers and String Hoppers. Chintha will explain.

The other feature of this cute little place is that you can do a terrific cooking class
and then feast on your labours. A trip to the local market and local spices for you to take home.

If you need anything, just ask.
So it's now easy to see why this is one of my favourite place to dine in Sri Lanka.

The staff here was great- we didn't order any food, but we drank quite a bit and ordered from the 'happy' menu.

They have lounge chairs with umbrellas and mats on the floor which they are really laid back about allowing people to use. I've been to other spots where they want money for the use of these items, but these guys casually brought over a menu and didn't push us at all to order something (we of course did).

Again, did I mention they have a 'happy' menu?

Chintha is a goddess of Sri Lankan flavors! The class is 2500 rupees or so. This included a trip to Galle and back (600Rs), and a veritable all you can eat buffet of the food you make (equivalent to 1500Rs). So, arithmeticians unite! This means the instruction itself, the ingredients, and the great company only cost you 400Rs. Unreal value!

Chintha deserves your business, and (hopefully) you deserve the experience...even if you don't deserve it....it's 20 dollars, dude, just go for it!

We had a cooking class here and selected this place entirely at random (there are a few places that offer this along the same road). I would definately recommend Happy Spice! Chintha showed us how to cook the full traditional rice and curry and adjusted the recipe to our tastes (inability to handle HOT food!). She really took her time and got us involved (although you don't have to if you don't want to get yoru hands dirty). We then had the pleasure of eating all of the food afterwards, which there was plenty of. Chinta is very personable and shared some stories about what she has been doing throughout her life and after the class she emailed all of the recipes so we can try to recreate rice and curry at home.
Fanatstic experience which i would thoroughly recommend.
