“Friendly teacher and great curries”
Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

A very friendly and enjoyable class starting with a trip to the vibrant vegetable, spice and fish markets. We learnt to make coconut cream and coconut milk from scratch along with dahl, fish curry, Beetroot curry, pumpkin curry, Aubergine curry, ocra and rice. We then enjoyed our creations afterwards. Highly recommend.

“Delicious curries, but just that, curries”
Reviewed October 2, 2013 via mobile

As a foodie person, I could leave Sri Lanka without assisting to a cooking class, after checking online and reading the reviews I decided to go for Sonja Cooking Lesson in Unawatuna.
A middle age lady with a funny laugh, take you to the market in Galle (although she doesn't explain much unless you ask her, and take you to a spice shop to 'make' you buy) to go later to an open air kitchen to show us how to prepare yellow rice, coconut sambol and 5 delicious curries, in a very relax atmosphere.
But at the end, all curries are similar to make: same spices with different main ingredient (just change pumpkin for beetroot or for fish).
it is a shame she doesn't teach more about Sri Lanka cuisine because there is much more to learn, she could have shown us how to make hoppers, chutneys, roties (kind of chapatis) or the amazing sweet pudding call wattalapan (actually, when I booked the class I asked if we could make this pudding, but the day of the class she kind of forgotten about it :()
Also other point she could improve is giving the recipes already printed so we just need to take small notes on the sides, instead give a blank notebook where we have to spend half of the class writting the ingredients and method of cooking instead of watching and participating in the cooking.
So for all this, I rate this class with a 2.5/5

“Great class, but beware the spice seller!”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

Karunas class is fantastic, I can't recommend it highly enough. Just a word of warning about the charming yound spice seller you will visit in the galle markets, he is a total rip off. He doesn't listen if you ask how much or for just a little. I would recommend walking away if he tries to charge you too much for what you ask for. If you want to buy spices in Sri Lanka, visit a supermarket in Colombo on your way out and get the same spices for a few hundred rs in price marked packets instead of the thousands this guy asks for.

“Great fun learning to cook stunning food”
Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

Myself and my girlfriend signed up for a day's cooking and were so happy we did. Going to the market was ok, picking out veg etc but the real fun was in learning to make seriously tasty daal, tuna curry and a whole raft of delicious dishes. Thoroughly recommended.
