“You will never never know if you never never go!”

I stayed at the Kingfisher for 6 nights and I think it is the best spot on the Unawatuna Beach. It is a bit more expensive than some of the others however, worth the extra for the great sea views, great balcony and attention to detail in the rooms. The beds are comfy with excellent pillows, the lovely staff are accommodating and fun. The restaurant is mainly a Thai influence with a local twist. The seafood is very fresh and tasty.
If you learn a few words in Sinhala, you will get even better service and a friendly smile for trying!

The sandy beach (no rocks, maybe a little coral, but you are on a reef!) has come back in front of the hotel and is now a lovely place to top up a tan and swim in the clean waters. Sun beds are available, and as i write this, the owners advised me new umbrellas are on their way. Worth a night or three!

Room Tip: The top two rooms have the best views. There are only four rooms and all are good!

We loved this place, where we stayed for only one night. Wish we had stayed longer! Fantastic rooms with amazing views from the balcony (get the top room to the left), high standard; however there are only four of them. Note that there is not a door between the room and bathroom - but it was not a problem for us.

The restaurant has tasty juicy perfect seafood - try the arak prawns! A bit more pricy, but you get what you pay for. Great drinks in the little bar placed right by the water. Try to get a table on the sand and take of your slippers. Lovely, lovely! They even had sparkling wine - perfect for the first evening on our honeymoon! <3 We cant wait to return.

We stayed at the Kingfisher hotel for 5 nights. The rooms are very beautiful, spacious and spotlessly clean. I definitely wouldn't call this place a hotel though, because it doesn't offer any of the services you would normally expect from a hotel. There is no reception, no hotel management, no one to give you any advice about Unawatuna, its surrounding areas or sightseeing... So you're basically on your own. The rooms are situated above the Kingfisher restaurant which offers pretty decent food. The restaurant staff is very nice, but their understanding of the English language isn't good enough to have a conversation that isn't about the restaurant's menu. There is barely any beach in front of the hotel, so I wouldn't recommend it for sunbathing or swimming (unless you don't mind rocks).

On the last day of our stay, we had to wait until 11 PM at night to go to the airport because we had a night flight. The Kingfisher Hotel was fully booked, so we asked for some advice for a decent hotel or B&B nearby to book just for the day. Unfortunately, no one was able to give us any advice or help us in any way. This is the least I would expect from a 'hotel' that charges this much money for a room!

We only saw the hotel owner on two occasions. On both occasions, she simply ignored most of the guests. The second time we saw her, the only thing she asked us is to leave a review on TripAdvisor for her hotel. She didn't bother checking if we were even enjoying our stay though, so here is our review...

Though the room was the best we've encountered in Sri Lanka, I wouldn't recommend the Kingfisher because it's way overpriced for what you get and it's lacking service and atmosphere.

Hands down the best place to stay in Unawatuna. While we are not the type to repeat a destination, we have already booked our stay for next year. From the restaurant food to their staff, everything was fantastic. Be sure to walk or take a tuk tuk to Jungle Beach while there. It's very secluded and the fish they prepared on site was fabulous. Thanks Kingfisher for a great holiday! See you next year.

Room Tip: Ask for room number 1. It's on the top floor and has the best views.

We stayed 5 nights at King Fisher with our 3 month old son. The room was very clean and well planned out. The balcony was our favorite feature as it was nice to sit, relax, listen to the ocean and sometimes see a kingfisher bird fly into sight. The service by all staff was friendly and efficient. We ate many times at the hotel and enjoyed the meals...our favorites being the Spicy Ginger Prawns, Prawn Pita Wrap and the mixed fruit juice! We ate at 4 other places along the beach and wished we just ate at the hotel restaurant! The owner was very kind and ensured my wife, son and I made it to our next stop in Sri Lanka safe and sound.
