We chanced upon Tartaruga in Unawatuna since we needed to park for the night by the beach side. It was serendipidty in the truest sense. We checked into a cute cottage, just ample for 2 adults , quickly headed to their restaurant. It's been morethan a year and i still remember that we Ordered the yummiest lemon butter fish grill and calmaris . We washed it down with delicious lion beer. with Over all . The place is ideal if you do not have a great expectation. Best suited if you want to laze your tired feet on the beach, stroll around in the night , listen to amateur music bands, not frazzled by persistent vendors , good booze, sea food , meet new people and smell the beautiful ocean ...

Heard about Unawatuna as a nice place to stop.
We crashed here for 2 nights which was enough time to look around the small seaside town which we did on bicycles.
The rooms at Tartatuga are basic but clean, food was nothing special which seems to be the trend around this area.

The staff were naturally very friendly which was a breath of fresh air from everyone else being friendly because they want to sell you something.

tartaruga hotel has some really good food to offer ! i can still taste the calamari.
really enjoyed our time there except that there were too many vendors on the beach and we had to pay one of them 200slr just to get rid of him !
otherwise perfect :)

Room Tip: there is a kumari bike rental place rite at the start of the road leading to tartaruga, the guys renting it out is Baddula and his wife ! very nice and extremely helpful man :)

I put May 2011, but we were actually there in April 2011...

Tartaruga hasa good location on Unawatuna beach and the chillout area in front of their bar is awesome ...

We had a large family room for 4 people with a fan for a reasonable rate...room was clean and bathroom was huge, and the fan kept the temperture OK in there...

OUr dissappointment was stemmed from a few silly rules and practices that we experienced there.

Firstly at night they switch the free wifi off...so just to clarify i do not wish to be on the web in the daytime, when there are things to do, but i prefer cheking mails etc before bed, and to our surprise thats when they switch off the router...

Further to this, we asked for a few large beers to keep drinking after the bar closed, and they did allow us to do so, but switched all the lights off, and it felt as a means to get us to move, i can expect this from a normal bar/restaurant but not from one attached to a hotel, ie where you have people around all day/night..

Also we stayed there the day before the sinhalese new year, and on the morning of new year we were not so politely informed that th hotel would be closed for the day and if we could settle our bill and leave..! we were going to spend the rest of the following day on their beach, spending at their restaurant but they just shut the place down on us... so whilst I am all for respecting local traditions and culture i do think it is unfair to take bookings when they knew they would shut the place down the following day...

So all in all a nice place with good restaurant and bar, but could do with a bit more customer service and clearer upfront clarifications of the hotel sercives available and their times...

Room Tip: We had a room just with fans, no a/c and we were ok...

We had a fab time at Tarataruga with Neel and his team. The place was everything we expected and more. Some of the reviews on here are a tad unfair I feel - in particular the review made by the people who didn't eat/drink or stay there?

The food was awesome, the staff were bent to every need and genuinely just enjoyed the interaction with the punters which always helps. The location of the rooms means the only thing between your front door and the crystal clear warm ocean was a bar (perfect).

Breakfast has a selection of Sri Lankan style, simply massive and delicious - generally fish curry, fresh crusty bread, dahl, sambol and some hoppers (similar to noodles) or you could have fruit, or scrambled eggs etc etc.

Lunch has a decent selection of sandwiches and a larger menu of standard Sri Lankan fare and for the evening they have a wide range of fresh fish, shrimp, crab, lobster etc all for great prices.

The beach was busy whilst we were there (for the cricket tests) so probably like being there during high season which does mean some of the neighbouring sites up and down the beach were enjoying partying into the wee hours which was good fun and you soon get used to the music. The area in general is more backpacker/flashpacker than hotelier, which suited us and there is plenty around the area to mix up the selection.

Tuk tuk into town is around 400Rps, which is GB£2 and about 15mins. Transfers arranged by the hotel to/from airport for us - ask for the new highway as opposed to the coastal road if travelling at night as it's much smoother and quicker and you won't be looking out the window!

Rooms at the Tartaruga were pleasant, comfy and a/c with fans if you switch the a/c off. Boiling hot water bathroom, which you may not use due to the heat outside (cold water a little more refreshing after a day in 35+) and the rooms are cleaned as and when you ask basically. It's a very laid back vibe, if you want something, go ask for it rather than waiting for someone, which again, suited us.

Reception changes money at the rates of the changers in town, even lending me 3000Rps when I didn't have any USD left to save me going into town to an ATM that afternoon!

Will gladly go back again for the cricket without question! Entirely recommend this place for anyone who's beach shacked/bungalow-ed before. Cracking value.

Room Tip: Rooms closer to the office maybe be quieter as the other side is next to a neighbouring bar which could be noisy occasionally.
