“Wonderful hotel with a unique location on the sea.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2011

Very nice, attentive and unobtrusive service. A very nice greeting at this point to Umara, of which we unfortunately could not say goodbye in person. Beautiful room on the first floor with direct sea view. Good food and reasonable prices. Unfortunately, the limited choices for breakfast make this boring quickly. We can recommend Thaproban but in any case.

“Ok, but over-rated on Tripadvisor”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2010

We (10 people) walked in off the street for lunch (Aug10) which was ok (about $12.50/head) but didn’t deserve the general "over-rating" on TripAdvisor. No real complaints, just it didn’t really meet the stated review expectations. Everyone perfectly happy, but also happy not to go back.

“I stayed at sister hotel Thambapanni, in...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2010

I stayed at sister hotel Thambapanni, in February (which I have already reviewed). The Thaproban is on the beach. It has a wonderful restaurant (best chef in Unawatuna!) with wifi access and the best service you might hope to find. The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming....mostly because of the way staff relate to their customers.
They are funny too...all heart and soul! I look forward to visiting again in November!

“Very Good”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2010

Right on the beach front. Not cheap by Sri Lankan standards but still a real bargain. We had Red Snapper and 300grams of prawns cooked in coconut both were fantastic. Service was excellent - certainly the place to go if you want a more "upmarket" experience/meal

“Didn't live up to the hype”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 21, 2010

Sorry to say that we ate there 2 weeks ago and the 'front' soon wore very thin. My wife had fish that wasn't the freshest on the block. I had crab. Now the local crab here doesn't have any meat in the body i.e. the shell which was a disappointment. When attempting to access the rest of the meat naturally I needed a crab meat fork which they didn't have. I was told by the waiter that his boss was considering buying some from Colombo!
It's a nice place with lovely staff but charge western prices for local delivery.
We felt let down by our experience.
