We booked this hotel as our friends from the UK were going there. When were were shown our room it was dirty, the sheets were dirty, it smelt and it was very depressing. Spoke to management and they said they would clean it and change the linen. This was done but it was still not somewhere where we were willing to stay. As it was NYE we decided to stay the night. Big mistake. Music went on to 6am, roof leaked and bugs everywhere. Awoke and had something that was meant to be breakfast and then Checked out forgoing our deposit. Friends stayed and had one night when there was no music out of nine nights. They also got out of bed at 10.30pm one night and walked down the street and booked into another hotel for a good nights sleep. If you are after backpacker style of accommodation and late night music then this place would suit you if not don't go. On the upside they did fantastic Italian food as it is run by Italians.

Although our stay started pleasantly enough, it ended up being a terrible experience and has forever changed my opinion of Sri Lanka. We arrived the first evening as a group of girls to find that our room was right next to the disco. When we requested to be relocated, the owner offered us different accommodation - the hotel's villa, at the same rate. We accepted and agreed to move there the next night. That night, the owner drove us over, announcing to us on the road that he was "probably too drunk to drive." When we arrived, he poured us all drinks and proceeded to try and regale us with stories of his family. Innocent enough. However, once we made a move towards leaving, he cornered one of the girls in our group in the kitchen and grabbed her, trying to kiss her. She had to push him away and ran out of the kitchen altering us to what had happened. The owner then became aggressive and creepy, telling us that it didn't matter if we locked the doors because "the windows are always open. ALWAYS OPEN." Being 5 women travelling, we decided to leave the hotel, losing the money that we had paid for our visit in lieu of being raped during the night. Full Moon Resort in not a place I would recommend to any woman traveler.

As a first time visitor to Sri Lanka I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but this seemed to be about the norm for Unawatuna. Do not expect 5 star accommodation, Sri Lanka is a developing country so does not have that kind of infrastructure. What you do get is:

Rooms: Simple, but clean and fitted with ceiling fans, air-con and mosquito nets. Many of the rooms face directly on to the beach, but this is not always a good thing as there were beach parties at adjacent resorts most nights, and some of these went on until 4:00am.

Facilities: There is a bar with a small dining area and an average menu, and a beach. That's it, but that's pretty much all you need.

Prices: Cheap! We paid about USD 50.00 per night for our room, and bought Gin from the hotel bar for about USD 27.00 per litre bottle.

Location: About 140km from Colombo airport, which takes 2 hours when the roads are quiet, but up to 4 hours during busy periods (i.e. most of the day). Unawatuna is about 5 minutes from Galle by Tuk-tuk (tip: get friendly with a tuk-tuk driver as soon as you arrive and he'll stick with you for the duration of your stay, very useful), and there is plenty to see and do in the local area. There are lots of other beach resorts and bars within walking distance, and there is generally something going on in the evening...

Staff: Brilliant! Very friendly and accommodating. The girl on reception was a dab hand at arranging Saris, so helped all the girls in our group get dressed for a cultural dinner event that we were going to. The bar staff were great, anticipating our recurring order of 5 gins, 1 vodka and lots of tonic. The manager was also brilliant, getting up at 3:30am on our day of departure to make us tea before we left.

Food: Average. The breakfasts were very small and not that good, but the lunch menu was OK and reasonably priced.

So, cheap, cheerful and pretty good value for money. We had a great time.

We spent a week there, it is an absolutely lovely place, right at the sea, shady trees, nice little restaurant, nice helpfull staff, functional rooms, we really enjoyed it.

It is a wonderful, peaceful place, the staff was very friendly and helpful, the room clean and convenient, there is a nice little restaurant and also nice restaurants next to it on the beach.

It is a perfect place to relax, except if there is a party next door. When we arrived there was partynight next door. The boss informed us immediately on arrival, but we already had fallen in love with this place, so that we decided to stay .This night turned out to be really loud, but all other nights were very peaceful and quiet.

We enjoyed it very much

I stayed two nights at Full Moon Resort and it definitely worth what I paid for, if not more. The location is perfect, as it is in the middle of the beach, there are lots of nice restaurants around and you can just spend your day in the sunbed. The rooms decent, but clean. The staff are really nice and helpful. I have not tried their Italian dishes that people seem to be raving about, but the Western breakfast was 'ok'. I would try a different hotel next time I come back, but only for the sake of trying out the others.

I travel a lot, and wanted a budget holiday right on the beach with our teenage daughter. Wife and I checked Full Moon out on a previous trip, and were impressed by the location, good simple Italian food and cabanas. The price is really competetive, and we wondered if there woulfd be any draw-backs ( noisy a/c, electrics, cleanliness). We didn't need to worry- the a/c was efficient and quiet, bathroom spacious, electrics fine, and rooms were serviced and cleaned well every day. We had a choice of three rooms- two with a double bed in the apex, but settled for two doubles on one level. All would have been fine.
Embrace the Full Moon for what it is: Low cost safe, comfy and clean accommodation on the beah; and you will not be upset. Decor is a bit shabby in the rooms, but owner Rupasena promised a re-furb soon. Breakfast can be bland, but you can order a la carte, or soon find the dishes you prefer. We tried other restaurants on the beach, but were not impressed and returned to Full Moon which was consistently good. This is one of the better (and safer) beaches in Sri Lanka, and Full moon has a prime location right in the centre. The staff are all friendly and helpful, and there are plenty of free sunbeds, shade and beach towels on request.

Room Tip: The family rooms with apex double bed have quite steep stairs which wont suit everyone; the two doub...

The Full Moon Resort is perfectly located: I had a room that meant that I opened the door to the beach. However, it can get noisy which makes sleeping problematic. Other than that, for a short break it fit the bill
