“Fantastic spot and service”
Reviewed April 7, 2013

Great hotel and value for money. Perfect location, lovely rooms and top service. Every member of staff was truly welcoming and acknowledged our presence with a smile, a handshake or a wink each time we walked through the door or down to the dining area. Staff seemed to like our company as much as we enjoyed their attention.

Our room was made each morning whilst we had breakfast. It was as clean as you'd come to expect from the worlds leading hotels. I've seen the kitchen operation, too, and it was very well kept. top marks for cleanliness.

I loved being able to talk to the chef whilst ordering my fresh seafood about how i could and should enjoy my dinner each night. That was delicious at every opportunity.

The manager pulls every string to make your stay that much more pleasurable. He arranged perfect dinners by the ocean - very romantic! He also ensured we'd stay in quality lodgings our whole time in unawatuna. Since we hadn't booked at couldn't stay at thaproban the whole week, we are staying at their sister hotel for a few nights then we'll be back for the remainder of our holiday.

I've had the best sleep here in all my 2 weeks in Sri Lanka

Book in advance here, it's worth committing to this stay.

Room Tip: Sea views are brilliant from 1st floor

Enjoyed 5 great nights in one of the front superior rooms. Great sea views almost on the beach and the sounds of crashing waves. The staff were more than helpful and friendly throughout including the management. We enjoyed 2 lovely meals including fresh fish. A well positioned hotel towards one end of a lovely sandy bay. Water warm and safe and plenty of eating and drinking establishments along the beach front

Room Tip: go for rooms 3 or 4

We stayed for 2 nights at the beginning of April. The friendly service, comfortable rooms and delicious food all made it an amazing stay.

We arrived at 9am, too early to check in. However, after giving us a complimentary drink and letting us look at the stunning views on the terrace they had prepared our room for us. The terrace is a gorgeous place to eat breakfast or dinner. The waves can get a bit choppy and it's best not to sit too close to the edge. The service was amazing from every member of the team, very helpful and friendly. The food was excellent and very good value for money. The room was spacious and clean with lovely views, and ours was one of the cheaper options.

We were sad to check out after two days but it was only because it was fully booked, otherwise we would've stayed for the full holiday.

I fully recommend this hotel and would stay again.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the cheaper rooms and even that had a four poster bed with mosquito net, en suit...

We stayed here for 7 nights at the end of our Sri Lanka trip. The hotel is on the beach front close to plenty of restaurants and bars. We had the penthouse which has a beautiful view of the bay from the large balcony. It had 2 bedrooms, one upstairs and one down. a large room downstairs with a large bathroom. It was clean and tidy with a small fridge and coffee and tea making facilities.
The beach house itself is only small with just 15 rooms so quite an intimate and friendly settling. As some previous reviews have stated there is no real beach on the front but after speaking to the manager there are major plans that after the breakwater is finished there will be a major sand dredging on the beach to create more space for loungers etc and repair the Tsunami damage.(They haven't been allowed to do it until the breakwater is finished)

The hotel has a very popular restaurant with superb fresh seafood cooked to order and many a night it was full to bursting!!! Excellent food cooked by the sous chef and his staff- curry and rice was amazing!!!!! so many different dishes that changed nightly. The chef actually came round to ask diners if they had enjoyed their food- nice touch and when I said how great the dhal was he came out to tell me how to cook it!!!!! The breakfast was freshly cooked to order with a good selection and lots of fresh fruit!

The thing that stands out for this place is the staff, such great customer service at all levels, from the room boys to the front of house to the manager. It is obviously so important that you have a great stay. Such warmth from everyone, from knowing your name to your breakfast choices without being asked. We couldn't have asked for better service and all staff are credit to the hotel.
We would highly recommend to stay here during a trip to Unawatuna for it's 5 star service and wonderful staff in a lovely location

We stayed for 14 nights at the Thaproban beach house. We really enjoyed our stay and all the staff were very friendly, charming and helpful. Our de-luxe room had a comfortable double bed and was clean and welcoming. Every day our bed was decorated with fresh flowers - a lovely touch by Nuwan! The food was excellent and we were especially impressed by the chef WeeraTunga and his team. Graham has a severe allergy to sesame and from the moment we arrived all the catering staff were made aware of this and their extra care and diligence made our meals relaxed and enjoyable without anxiety. Nuwani was extremely charming and helpful and organised trips for us to Yala and whale watching both of which ran like clockwork with good planning and organisation. It is impossible to name all the staff but the management team at TBH should be very proud of their staff who really all went out of their way to make our holiday truly memorable - thank you to one and all.

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in March 2013 on our 2 week holiday in Sri Lanka. I had previously been to Unawatuna & stayed at the Secret Garden just opposite, but this was unfortunately fully booked for our visit so we chose Thaproban based on reviews & fairly reasonable price.

The staff at the hotel are very friendly, & of course will try to encourage you to eat & drink there - nothing wrong with trying to drum up business! The room was cleaned daily (although we did get a few animal droppings in the bathroom - unavoidable due to the open plan of the hotel - which were missed one day). The manager came over to chat to us several times during our stay & other staff always accommodated our requests with no problems.

Breakfast didn't have the biggest choice (it is a small, freshly-prepared menu, rather than a buffet), but what you do get is good quality & tastes fresh! Eggs, fresh fruit platters, toast, juices, etc. Dinner is good too - especially the 'fish market' fresh fish every day. I had a huge tuna steak there for about £3 one day, a lot cheaper than I expected!

The hotel is located right on Unawatuna beach, but you cannot sit on the beach directly in front of the hotel, as it is often in the water! It is not a problem to have to walk for 1 minute to get to the beach though. In general, Unawatuna beach is gorgeous, & still (relative to other areas of the world) not that busy. However, the tide comes in quite far, even during the day, so once it does start to become busy beach space may be a big problem here. I'd recommend a trip to Jungle Beach if you want somewhere with a more private / quiet feeling - the hotel staff will tell you how to get there.

Overall, the hotel is fairly good value for money. I would still choose the Secret Garden over here (mainly because it is more private, & does not feel as open in terms of lizards & bugs making their way in) but I would definitely stay again.

Had a great stay at the Thaproban Beach House. Location, staff, food all excellent. You are made to feel really welcome but, not pressured. Stayed in a superior room front facing for 3 nights.

As with all reviews it basically boils down to one's own taste, wants and needs but, having travelled the past 2 weeks throughout Sri Lanka this was a very well organised and run hotel right on the beach with excellent food....what more could you ask for?
